Screw long tests that take ages. Let's see what you're made of in one minute. Three questions. 80% of people who do this test fail to get all three answers right.

    1. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

    2. If it takes five machines five minutes to make five widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

    3. In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

Were you recently interviewed by Websummit by any chance?! These questions, literally word for word, are part of their shtick.

    3. 47 days
Still can't figure out the first one. If the ball is 5c then is the total not 1.05 ?

It takes 47 days to cover one half of the lake and 1 day to cover the other half so 1 day is the answer!

I thought the total was $1.10.
So how could the ball cost $1.05 if the bat costs $1 more?

    It was a typo/
    The ball costs $0.05
    The bat costs $1.05

I got it , any more?

    The ball costs $0.05
    The bat costs $1.05

But if the bat cost $1.00 and the ball cost $0.10 would that not give a $1.10 total and the bat would still be $1 dearer than the ball?

Bat would be 0.90 more than the ball.

Bat costs $1, ball cost $0.10, how more expensive is the bat?

Bat costs $1, ball cost $0.10, how more expensive is the bat?

    90 cent
    Are you having a laugh?

    $1.00 - $0.10 = $0.90

There are two answers to No. 3.

    47 days and 1 day.

Yeah, there's always an abstractness to these online "IQ" questions that'll lead to at least 2 answers in 1 of the questions.

If people are fighting about it being A or B, then it brings more eyes to the page/post. :)

Like those damn maths ones that you'll get a different answer for if you do the stuff in the brackets first or if you multiply first. They are designed to be abstract and hook you with a line like "99% of you will FAIL". :D

And you are right, in my opinion. Both 1 day and 47 days would be correct!

Yeah, my OH's addicted, got onto one recently where it wouldn't advance you until the correct answer was inserted for the current problem, etc., last I saw she was at over 5,500 correct... :p

    1. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

The ball costs 25c. Everyone that said 5c is wrong. Here's why:

Yes, the Bat & the Ball cost $1.10, but that's a special offer, like how a 4 Pack of Bountys are in Tesco*.

If you went into Tesco and subtracted the cost of three Bountys from the full cost of what 4 pack costs, in order to find out how much one Bounty was, you'd be laughed at. I know, I've tried it and no how much you appeal to them they will not let you have one Bounty for 2c.

The Bat costs $1.25 and the Ball costs $0.25c.

So $1.10 for both is actually a pretty good deal. Just like a Bounty 4 pack.

*Dealz is actually cheaper at €1.50.
