I started going the gym and began using protein shakes but had to stop as i developed man boobs and now in cant get rid of them. I read up and it seems to be a common side effect of protein shakes. It sucks because man boobs are pretty much impossible to get rid of :( Did people know about these side effects?

Unless you're using some really weird niche protein then it's not the protein that's causing it.

Whey protein is actually a high quality protein that is made out of cow’s milk. And what most guys are unaware of is that milk can negatively affect man boobs.

Organic milk comes from cows, but the caveat here is that for cows only produce milk when they are pregnant. And naturally when an animal is pregnant their estrogen levels are also increased. Since estrogen is the hormone that is responsible for man boobs, exposing your body to it by taking organic milk increases your chances of forming female breasts

I'd worry more about your lack of brain cells than the man boobs.

Whey is a by product of milk and is also produced when making dairy products like cheese and is a better source of protein than eggs which are the gold standard in protein measurement.

You're talking about gyno, man boobs generally is used to refer to just fatty deposits on the chest are not feminization of Male breast tissue.

Whey is filtered and I can guarantee you that the small exposure from milk or dairy products or by products is not enough to raise your estrogen level enough to cause gyno, gyno is caused by high estrogen levels over a prolonged period of time such as puberty or long term steroid use without an anti estrogen. You also need to be somewhat sensitive to estrogen to get gyno.

Gyno can also be caused by progesterone.

You are however more likely to get gyno from dairy alternatives such as soy milk as that is highly estrogenic and has been proven to cause negative effects on males especially prepubescent and pubescent males suppressing natural test and raising estrogen levels.

Also cows produce milk after giving birth, when estrogen levels are at an all time low in mammals, it's prolactin which is responsible for lactation.

Eat less, lift more do more cardio
If you're not trolling you've more than likely been taking protein shakes thinking they'll give you muscle, they are the equivalent to eating a chicken breast. You've more than likely taken in far too many calories and gotten fat

But if you are doing work at gym then you will develop a large chest. Hardly boobs lol

Not necessarily, if you're eating in a surplus with quality well balanced macros and doing sufficient weight training yes.

If you're going in sitting on machines using 5kg for 2 sets of 10 reps with 10 minute social media breaks between each set and eating everything in sight you'll just get fat.

Most people that go "beast mode" at the gym half a$$ their training

Dont dead lift or chin up. Incline bench press with 17.5 dumbbells 3by12

Alot of protein shakes are bulked out with soya or are soya based. This affects estrogen levels in the body. The same with protein bars. Most have soya as one of the first ingredients in the bar. If you take this you would be better getting a packet of chicken or ham after your workout.
Just to give you an idea many ladies going through the menopause use soya supplement, soya based foods to bring up the estrogen level they have lost.
Could be you more sensitive to the soya.
Another thing many men also are told not to take soya if they have low sperm count as well. Estrogen can effect the testosterone and progesterone in the body. That is if you are thinking ahead.
It can take a while for your body to recover and that is what has happened to you.

Wouldn't you then need to wear man bras aswell or is it safe to carry breast's around unsupported like women in case you develop very large ones in the double D size area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,386 ✭✭✭SortingYouOut

What is your current calorie in and out each day?

Make sure it isn't a weight gainer you're using also, as they're quite calorie dense.

Optimum Nutrition do a great whey that's very low in carbs and calories.

If you think it may be a hormone issue, maybe go see someone.

Dont dead lift or chin up. Incline bench press with 17.5 dumbbells 3by12

Also, if your back permits it, Deadlift and Squat.

These large muscle groups increase testosterone when built on, which may help and will also help you build muscle elsewhere.

If they gave you a program without testing your deadlifts, chin up, squat and flat bench then the program isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Like humans, cows only produce milk after they have given birth, and dairy cows must give birth to one calf per year in order to continue producing milk. Typically they are artificially inseminated within three months of giving birth.

If you are doing it for your fitness, I would recommend a HIIT class or a similar group workout instead.

A friend of mine is going through transition and swears by protein and soya, supposedly there's female enhanced ingredients in soya milk etc

Used to be called Sennan now turning into Sienna, after that I was wary about anything to do with soya.

Supposedly it's prone to calming people down but prone to tantrums when they loose it...

I Remember the good old days when I used to work out, there was us and the muscle marys....

Nothing personal to the op that was just what we called the milkshake and soy boys

If you're brand new to a gym no instructor worth their salt will test your deadlift during a basic assessment you learn basics on machines, move to free weights.
However even at that deadlifting is more complicated than most lifts so it takes longer time to teach unlikely to be taught through a free assessment

Good quality proteins don't contain soy.
They are hydrolised, concentrate or isolate whey.
Good powders now don't contain much lactose either

High quality organic, grass-fed, whey protien with nothing added (no sweetners, synthetics or any other junk) should be fine.

Avoid anything such as soya, plastics (food storage) and even essential essences (e.g. lavender) and do not take any 'rememdies' for hair loss also.

I'm sick of the myth that soy causes male breast development.

This sounds like time I introduced carrots into my diet and put on fat.

I've done research that suggests carrots have shuttle fat from the ubulus to the central romulus.

    So not the cheesecake.

Nothing to do with multiple studies showing it suppresses testosterone by boosting estrogen in males going through puberty and prepubescent. I guarantee I can find an equal amount of links contradicting each other.
Just search for actual scientific bodies that are peer researched.
It's not a myth in the slightest.
Will it in an average, healthy hormonally well balanced male, honestly probably not, in those who's hormones aren't stable good chance of it.
Also excess estrogen is potentially cancerous in males of any age.

    Happens :

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/18558591/

An unusual case of gynecomastia associated with soy product consumption.

A 60-year-old man was referred to the endocrinology clinic for evaluation of bilateral gynecomastia of 6 months' duration.

He reported erectile dysfunction and decreased libido.

On further review of systems, he reported no changes in testicular size, no history of testicular trauma, no sexually transmitted diseases, no headaches, no visual changes, and no change in muscular mass or strength.

Initial laboratory assessment showed estrone and estradiol concentrations to be 4-fold increased above the upper limit of the reference range. !!!!!!!!!

After he discontinued drinking soy milk, his breast tenderness resolved and his estradiol concentration slowly returned to normal.
