I'd probably get the regular 2600 non-X, and put the money into a GTX1660 instead. Way better performance.

I also wouldn't spend such an amount on the motherboard for a budget build, a more basic €70 B450 will be perfectly fine and savings can go towards a better GPU.

    hows that?

It's fine, though again, a GTX1660 is actually around the same price as that 580 and much faster, as well as consuming less power. Amazong have an EVGA GTX1660 for £199 for example.

I would buy everything from the same place as well, and would avoid using CustomPC, they have a poor reputation.

The MSI B450 is the same price as the MSI B450M which is better?

Built this last night, first build and no issues. Think i might of caught the bug as it is very satisfying building from scratch.

Really appreciate all your help. I've asked on the gaming forum but any game recomendations for a 12 year old who likes:

    Sea of Thieves
    Ark Survival
    Minecraft

Something that gets the most outof the system and shows what it is capable of.

    Thanks Again

If he likes those I would say he'd like Rust, Subnautica, No Man's Sky, Fallout 76.

Apex legends and fortnite are good if you want free games. Most kid's his age love fortnite.

The epic launcher that you need for fortnite are giving away free games every month at the moment as well.

Ran into a problem last night on this build, We have two monitors one is a good asus connected via display port. The other is a old dell it only has a dvi connector on it so i bought a hdmi to dvi converter. We connected it up and it works for extended desktop but we keep geeing blue screens. Disconnect the monitor and no issue.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Only using one monitor now and keep getting BSOD, seems to happen when youtube is on with discord running as well.

    I've updated all drivers.
Reinstalled the chipset from the DVD that came with the motherboard?

Any other ideas, child is really disappointed.

    Really appreciate the help

    Hey Irishder,

    A couple of things;

    - Download and run https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
    - Post the BSOD message so we can see what is causing it (https://imgur.com/upload)

    - The drivers on the DVD are most likely old - try the latest from - https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450-GAMING-PLUS#down-driver&Win10%2064
    - Did you use the brass risers when mounting the motherboard? If the motherboard is touching the backing plate it can cause BSOD's (obvious one but worth mentioning)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 947 ✭✭✭Irishder

    Thanks for the replies.

So last night i ran memory checker to make sure the RAM was good. all ok

I installed live update 6 for the MSI motherboard and downloaded and installed updated drivers. You are correct saying the ones on the DVD are old. so hopefully this will do it.
There was little silver standoffs used to mount the motherboard, i presume this is the same as the brass risers?

If it happens again i will use https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

Thanks fort the help I really appreciate it.

Looks like a RAM issue. What slots are they in? Should be in 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 if running 2 sticks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 947 ✭✭✭Irishder

2 and 4, ran the memory checker and all good

Might be worth running the ram at a lower clock and see if it happens again. Little voltage bump might help but I'd check timings etc first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,823 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

    Careful with RAM voltage.
It should run fine at 1.35V (some motherboards wrongly set it to 1.2V) but any more than 1.4V is unnecessary.

Try load a RAM XMP (or whatever AM4 variant is called) profile or enter the speed and timings manually.

Just looking at the last BSOD it looks different, ill let it run for a while and see it it happens again

With all the different codes your getting I would say this is a windows issue or a faulty drive/driver (for a faulty drive their are a number of pieces of software to test if its working as expected).
You could open cmd as administrator and run the command SFC /SCANNOW to see if their are any corrupt windows files.

If you know how you could try boot a live disc of linux and run this for a bit on the system and if it runs fine then you can look at Windows not playing nice with one of your components.
I had a similar issue with a system with lots of random bsods and it crashed all the time under Windows 10 but was fine under linux and windows 8.

Did you manually run a windows update. Last I checked if you run a windows update manually Microsoft puts you on the beta updates program which can cause instability for custom systems like ours.

And would that be just reset this pc from the start menu?

I'd go the clean install via a USB stick route myself. But up to yourself.

Yes update to the latest stable release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,318 ✭✭✭deceit

Before you reinstall windows I would run a scan on your harddrive and ensure that it is healthy.
This saves reinstalling and noticing you get a corrupt OS again if the drive is faulty.

You could also attempt to run the same command again in safemode, sometimes this helps.

    You can also try this:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Also if you want to send me the cbs.log I can review it for you and see if I can find out what the issue is.
