Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ACL advice

    Hi everyone,

I tore my ligament last summer but never had surgery, it healed slowly and it got to a point I could run without a problem. This Friday I played football for the second time, my knee buckled and I think it came out, couldn't keep on playing and now it is swollen and can't move it full range, a bit of pain too when standing on it.
I need to make the decision if I want to have surgery or just give up on sports. If I go the surgery way, I wonder hows the process here in Ireland, I am not very familiar with the health care here as I never had a problem, I would rather go back to Spain and have it done there, but it's a slow process and would need to use my holidays for visits, MRIs and the surgery, plus after the surgery not sure how long will I need to wait to fly back.
Can anyone who has gone through share their experience? Does the knee come back in full, or it will never be the same? If it doesn't not sure where is the value in having it done as after a year I barely noticed my torn ACL in my daily life. Truth is I really don't want to give up on team sports, gym is OK, but you don't get to socialize as much, and I find running terribly boring.
I wouldn't mind having surgery, but only if it is a safe one...

What you can do after the surgery is going to depend on what the surgery entails and that's going to depend on how bad the tear is. Does it need to be reconstructed? Does it need a great from hamstring or patellar tendon, for example. That's something only a specialist can advise on after a diagnosis.

It's not really a black and white situation where it's either torn or not torn so how long it would be after surgery that you would be back in action isn't a straightforward answer but the worse the damage is, the longer the recovery will be. And the worse the damage is, you won't be able to play team sports anyway.

There are a few threads for different people here to get an idea but you're going to need to go to a specialist to see exactly what the damage to your ACL is and what your options are because they might be very different to someone else:
