I was planning a trip to Donegal this week and I just checked the ESB map and the charger in Laghey is gone, is this permanent? Is it worth bringing an EV to Donegal?

You need to tell us what EV you have and more details about your trip. Is your starting point Sligo or Wexford? ;)

Laghey is gone, is this permanent?

To answer this part of the question; No it doesn't seem to be a permanent loss. Passing by today I saw that there is new EV only signage installed but no charger installed; the EV charging location on the site has moved a short distance; construction on a new site layout seems to be ongoing/incomplete.

What part of Donegal are you planning to visit ?

There are rapid chargers in Letterkenny (Triple Head) and Lifford (Chademo) and a few 22kW AC's scattered around the county. Also a Rapid (Triple Head) in Grange Co Sligo on your way up. (44 km from Laghey)

Hopefully Laghey will be back in operation soon.

I pass this service station regular on my way to work and noticed that the charger has been missing now for about a month, as has already been said they are changing the site layout and have temporarily removed the charger, the wife rang the esb and was told that there is no re-installation date for the charger yet.

How long would a petrol pump be out of action for glug glug €€ ? Attitudes need to change and they will but not for a generation or so.

I also noticed that the rapid at grange sligo was down for about 5 days but it is back up now, that really would have scuppered your gateway to the north if that was still down.

In donegal town there is 22kw charging in the carpark next to the water nr doms pier 1 if thats any good to you.

I was in Donegal for Easter (annual trip) and was checking on that charger frequently. At one stage there was a Berlingo van in the spot overnight.
What would you do in that scenario?

Nothing you can do its perfectly leagal but i do know thats the waterbus captains wheels and he uses that ev spot as his own private parking spot because it is right next to where the waterbus stops and is mostly always empty so is convenient for him, i mentioned it to him last summer before i even had an ev that it is an ev bay and he just laughed.

Just another reason why i purchased my ev based on never using public charging or very rarely, a sad but true fact, the future is bigger batteries not charging points, well it is for me anyway.

Very interesting, is that the guy that runs the ferry? Seemed like a really nice guy. It should be illegal for combustion engine cars to park in them.

The laghey rapid charger is back i eyeballed it sunday evening on my way back from work...did the ESB not just say that they had no installation date for it yet ;-DD

I will have a closer look on my way back from work in the morning to see if its alive and waiting for punters although it is not showing up on the ESB charge map app yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭babybuilder

Was there on Sunday myself and to be honest I didn't notice the new charger. The shop was very busy at the time so a parked vehicle may have been obscuring it.
I'll be delighted to see it back as I depend on it when going up and down to Donegal town.

Great thanks, what speed is that charger ? 22kW?

Looks like a triple head charger (ie CCS/Chademo/AC all on one charger) so would most likely be a 50 kw on CCS and Chademo.

    Not sure the AC power.

Edit a quick look at the map implies that it's 43 kw AC charging on these triple head chargers - but please note that charge speed on AC can only ever at best be what the cars on board AC charger allows.

So a car with a 6 or 7 kw AC on board AC charger will still only do 6 to 7 kw on a 43 kw AC charger.

Any updates? Still not showing up on the eCars map - would rely on this a lot when visiting Donegal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭D Dastardly

I will take a close look on my way back from work tonight but as its not showing on the ecars map i bet there are no lights on and nobody is home.

When are the new rapid chargers going in is there a schedule for them?

Just checked the charger a few mins ago and it is still an expensive ornament with no power.

I last checked it Friday evening because I was going to take a charge but it is still not working!

I am less than impressed by the network and I'm evaluating if I would keep my electric car long term or go back to a diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,639 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

If it's your local charger you shouldn't need it anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭D Dastardly

But it is nice to have it because sometimes there maybe that unexpected trip that you need to take when you are low on power and need a quick boost.

Hopefully the network will be more reliable when we have to pay.

Go back to a diesel, God forbid if you have to use a charger for any reason, sooner charging for charging comes in the better, at least then you can get what you pay for.

    is this a threat?

Why would it be seen as a threat? as it states it is an evaluation.

Agreed! I commute up from Dublin to visit family so it's a pretty vital one for me as I can't home charge up there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭D Dastardly

As it states it is an evaluation based on the flakey charger situation and lack of, if a charger is not working that you have to rely on then you are stuffed and effectively your car is limited to half its distance because you need to get back home.

How many petrol stations have you passed lately where the pumps are not working?

The real question should be how many petrol stations do you see with only one pump? This is the real problem with the charging network!

Yeah it is simple really all they have to do is copy what Tesla is doing.

We are pleased to announce our charge point at Kee's Esso Service Station, N15/R232 Junction, Laghy, Donegal is back in service and available to charge your EV.

CHAdeMO and CCS can't be used at the same time (DC and DC)

CHAdeMO and Fast AC can be used at the same time (DC and AC)

CCS and Fast AC can be used at the same time (DC and AC)

Leaf and I think the outlander phev are chademo. Everything else is CCS. That's pretty much the rule of thumb. Not sure about Tesla, think they're another connector but they sell adaptors so you can charge off of CCS.

Tesla have their own, but they've included CCS for the Model 3 in Europe. I don't know if they intend to put CCS on the other models in future, perhaps when ranges get a refresh if not before.

Tesla offer ChaDeMo adapters too, or at least someone does them for the Model S and X.

I think those two can charge off the Fast AC at 22 kW anyway, which is pretty good for a longish stop (e.g. if you're sitting down eating), because it's almost half the peak speed that most regular EVs get when fast charging (Ioniq, Leaf, etc. get about 45-50 off the eCars chargers).

What is worse than a charger that is not working? a charger that shows that it is working on the esb map but is not when u get there ;-(

The charger says "tap the card on the reader" but does nothing when you present your card to it, looks like a simple software issue, a reboot would probably fix it as in most cases, any chance of a round of software updates so this does not happen in the future?

A guy in a Mitsubishi plug in hybrid pulled in to use it as well, we had a quick discussion about the unsatisfactory state and lack of charging network.

For me i was close to home and did not bother to ring the esb but what if i had been away from home and needed to rely on it & it could not be fixed, not good.

In 30+ years of motoring i have never been to a service station where i could not get petrol/diesel.
In 2 months of owning an electric car i have not been able to charge at 2 chargers so far, its not looking good for electric cars is it.
In a few weeks i need to take a trip to the airport 110 miles away, no prizes for guessing what car i wont be taking.

These are the facts as they are, if any trolls want to have a go and defend a shoddy unreliable charging network then by all means have a go and vent your spleen, i wont rise to it.

Could i recommend an electric car to anyone based on the current charging network? well its just like Leonardo Dicaprio said in the film "The wolf of wall street" when he was asked "Is any of this legal" to which he replied "absolutely f*@king not!" ;-D

I dont think you'll need to rise to it, I havent seen any people defend the network. I think we are nearly in unanimous agreement on here that it needs improving... big time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,844 ✭✭✭Old diesel

It would be interesting to know if the ESB would have been able to remotely start the charge.

Id have rung them for that reason alone out of curiousity.
