Why doesn't it get the same doverage as the men's World Cup?

Ireland could win and the media wouldn't bat an eyelid?

    Well?

Ireland aren't competing. It has received plenty of coverage, unless you've been playing bongos in a remote cave.

You do know that Irish TV is showing all the games live? BBC has a lot of games and Fox sports in America is wall to wall coverage, probably more than the men's game there.

It has received far too much coverage.

Matter of fact - the quality is absolutely horrendous.

How many games have you watched or attended yourself, OP?

As already pointed out every game has been shown live on either RTE or TG4.

It's on a couple of channels every day since it started, with every match shown. What more coverage do you require?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,802 ✭✭✭✭suicide_circus

watched a a few halves, better than i expected but the difference in standard between the good teams and the bad teams seems to be wider than in the mens game. i am also guilty of having been distracted from the football checking out the pretty players.

Can't change the fact nobody is interested. The BBC are getting a bigger audience than they expected at around four or five million, but they are actually in it

It’s been better than the Copa America. That’s right Messi, Suarez Cavani et al

I'm too burnt out from watching football in the regular season TBH, there's way too much of it on now.

Some of the men are still playing in tournaments and it's basically July!

Still, it's good to see the women's game continue to grow.

I'm not a fan of the women's game particularly (just too many errors) but the numbers are pretty damned good. England will surely fetch up 8-9 million on Tuesday when they play the USA.

I am listening to the African Cup on Eurosport (certainly haven’t been watching) because I like the commentator but then it throws up a dilemma - VUVUZELAS. And terrace chants like something from Shaka Zulu

It is the duty of all men to feign enthusiasm for the Women's World Cup and to attentively watch every long tedious minute of every game in order to absolve himself of the sins of the Patriarchy.

The Irish women's Hocky team got massive interest as well when they had a good run in the world cup.

Ever heard anything before or since?

I know in Mens Beach Volleyball the men play in below the knee shorts and a jersey type top, while the women can only play in bottoms and tops no larger than 6cm in width.
Maybe if womens football was the same you'd see larger interest.

Free to air and they are doing well.

Watched a bit of one of the quarter finals and there was empty seats in the stadium! We'll see what attendance they have during the regular season to see how well it does after.

There are more errors at times but somewhat less of the histrionics of the men's game although that diving thing is creeping in. Also some very impressive players throughout.

Because there isn’t as much money involved in covering the women’s game as the men’s. It’s likely to cost more to cover the women’s game than revenue it generates. Wall to wall broadcasting of the games doesn’t matter when people are simply indifferent to women’s participation in the sport.

You might as well have asked why doesn’t men’s World Cup of hockey get the same coverage as the men’s World Cup in football?

It’s not a gender thing, the sport just isn’t that interesting.

Agreed. We tuned into the Women's Hockey in numbers because we were in it, otherwise it's a minority sport.

Have been watching a lot of games .
    Standard very good .
The coaching has been first class .
Way less diving / rolling around in women's game .
The top female players in England get in the region of €40,000 per year.
Attendances at games wouldn't be anywhere near men's game .
It's great for young girls watching to see what's possible .
The more females involved in sport the better for everyone .
Its been a great watch .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Jimbob1977

For female sports to grow, women need to support them by attending matches.

If a female sports fan is offered the choice of a free ticket for an Irish Men's soccer or rugby game.... or a free ticket to an Irish Women's soccer or rugby game, they will invariably attend the men's match.

The record for an Irish Women's Rugby international is about 5,000. That's really small.

Weren't the best team (USA) beaten by a team of fifteen year old boys recently?

I’ve watched a lot of the games also- I’ve been very impressed with the standard overall. Love the fact that the histrionics are absent vrs the men’s game. Some great role models for young girls

Not fair to compare girls against boys in the physical stakes. Pit them against their own gender and it resembles a perfectly good game of football

For women’s sports to grow, for any minority sport to grow, the way to make it grow is actually to generate interest in the sport by making it interesting to more people, as opposed to hoping the public will support them out of the goodness of their hearts. That sounds more like a charity than a competitive sport worth watching, let alone participating in, and that’s why interest levels are low as they are.

Disclaimer - I have no interest in the men’s sports either, but generating interest in something is more than just hoping people take pity on its participants and support the cause for altruistic reasons. There has to be something in it for them.

I'm comparing adult women at the elite level of their sport with fifteen year old boys who aren't.

It is though. usually in football the shorter; the better but you can’t compensate for some testosterone fuelled adolescents eager to say the bet the world champions.
