Remember the day when we had this much of a selection to choose from in the shop. Now we have a lot less than that and its actually hard enough to find a plain orange Ice Lollie

What happened and why aren't some of these legends around anymore ??

    Supply and demand I suppose.

They've been replaced by tubs of ice-cream the obese people in Ireland need more than one Ice-Lolly.

Golly Bar was removed because of its racist wrapper.

    Mars Ice-creams

I thought this was gonna be an ice pop tournament like the delicious chocolate one from yesterday.

I seldom buy any for myself, but occasionally buy some in Tesco to have in my freezer for any children passing through my home.

It was just renamed as a Giant Bar. Racist against tall people.

I never used the term lolly either, only ever heard it up north where that's what they called Me Freezers. Always an ice pop.

Also regarding names, when did people start putting the word 'super' before split?

Orange with chocolate on top or was that a Rocket?

I thought they were always Super Splits and I’m nearly 40.

Get an ice-lolly mould and a few cartons of juice and make your own.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Someone was on the rubber bandits Twitter feed this am..

I have vague, vague memories of the red finger lolly being advertised with the " he went thataway" line from them, would have been the mid eighties.

Going without a school dinner, and spending the money on a lolly from the "grocery van" was the thing back then.

    Yeah, cultchie here.

I'm talking the Al Jolson type figure on the cover it was removed because of racial overtones.

Nogger FTW! Nogger Black if you like liquorice.

Solero are doing lovely lollies at the moment with the bonus that they’re organic and have=a lovely fruity filling in the centre. I have the lemon & peach versions in my freezer right now and they’re under 60 cals each. The lemon is particularly good.

The Aldi Whirlz, a dupe for Twisters, are very nice also and under 50 cals.

I've already had three of the ice-pops in the OP today. A cola Calippo, an Orange Split/Super Split, and a Wibbly Wobbly Wonder (although the Aldi version of it, Jiggly Pops).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,523 ✭✭✭Sonny noggs

Calippos kept me alive at the Spanish GP a few years ago and Hungarian GP last year.

Yeah, tall people are the new blacks. ;)

I always use the term 'ice-pop' too.

And with regards the the Super Splits, I think that was just a bit of tweaking in the marketing. I remember then as Orange Splits and Super Splits but I can't say for definite whether the 'Super' was always there.

All these discussions focus on the golly bar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,997 ✭✭✭Degag

Like most things they just don't make them like they used to. Brunches are the prime example. There is hardly any biscuit coating on them these days compared to before.

Also, when they last brought back the Freaky Foot and the Fat Frog they were pale imitations of before. For example; i don't think the big toe had a coating of chocolate anymore.

Tangle Twister was another one they fcuked around with..... think they may have changed the vanilla ice cream to orange or something for a while?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,360 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

We can't get these anymore because Sharon hasn't any self control, eats 5 loop the loops at a time and blames the company for been fat, now we all have to suffer

If we have an ice pop (for that's what they're called) competition, then the Fat Frog has to be in there. Bring it back!

Too many posh chocolate things these days. A proper refreshing ice pop is water, sugar, colour. Nothing else. Sparkles, Fat Frog, Calippo, Mr Freeze, Fruit Pastilolly...

Could be a good competition actually!

Hmmm I may just run it again...

Could have a crisps one. Biscuits. Soft drinks.

Screw it, I'll jack in the job.

Future ones need to be more transparent. Can’t help thinking that ‘big chocolate’ got to you. Otherwise the final would have been Fry’s Turkish Delight vs Fry’s Chocolate Cream.

Are Lemon Calippo still available? They were fantastic.

If I could find these Mickey Mouse ice pop I had when I was a kid I’d be diabetic.
They where shaped like his head with a white outer layer with cola layer inside and somehow soft.It was halfway between an ice pop and a ice cream but wasn’t made with ice cream.
People swear they never had it but my local corner shop used sell them.Think there was a sonic one that was similar as well but not as nice as it didn’t have cola in it .Pure bliss.Anybody remember them?

Even though they were cheap and cheerful, I was never mad about having a Chilly Willy. I loved those Haiwatha ice-pops, though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,962 ✭✭✭r93kaey5p2izun

Calippos are unbeatable. I live on them if I'm away in a hot country. Fat frogs were a huge loss though. I only like ones that are pure ice with no ice-cream. Sparklers were good value when I was a child. Also liked cool-pops but we used to be warned about them being dirty.

Never heard anyone call them an ice lolly before. Is this widespread now?

Why has no one mentioned Little Angels and Little Devils? They were sublime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,089 ✭✭✭✭LizT

I used to love the mr Tall ice pops, I think that’s what they were called? It was a red and white spiral, don’t remember the flavour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭Day Lewin

    Begging for the name

Fadó, fadó, there was an ice-pop that had a purple middle which was like frozen blackcurrant jelly.

Better than it sounds, I assure you: firm, almost chewy fruit ice. The tip just dipped in chocolate.

They were my Paradise, my Shangri-la - we were in love for a whole summer:

may even have been the Summer of Love - it was that long ago - but I can't remember what they were called!

What offers? Any veteran hippies still around? (as well as me, obvsly)

You can get the lemon & lime ones, if that's what you mean, in the six-pack. Three lemon & lime, and three oranges ones. You can get them in Tesco, Supervalu, etc.

You won't get a better deal than the box they have in Aldi at the moment - 15 icecreams for 3 quid - you'll be found dead of brainfreeze with a big icecreamy smile on your face :)

(There does tend to be awful fighting over the bobbly ones.)
