    Hi,

Looking online and there seems to be more estate cars recently.
With 10k to spend and prioritising reliability then spec which of below would you choose, or definitely avoid such as the Insignia?

    Honda Accord
Hyundai I40 ( with new clutch)
    Peugeot 508 SW
Audi A4 or drop a couple of years for A6
    Skoda Octavia or Superb.
    Toyota Avensis TR
    Volvo V50

Have a 152 leon st 2.0 fr. Great car, over 130k km done, no issues at all. Seem very good value 2nd hand. I bought new, depreciation my only downside :-)

Thanks for that, ill add it to the list.

I don't like how the V60 looks but that's not a deal breaker or anything as its mostly about being reliable and decent spec.

They make a great used buy. Way cheaper than the equivalent Skoda even.

I managed to get a 2013 V70 D4 auto about 8-9 months ago for 10K , absolutely love it, lots of extras and some very handy features like no boot lip and you don't need to pull up the back seat as the seats fold flat with a single adjustment, even the headrests flick down.

    Passat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 154 ✭✭Maruney

    Thanks all for the replies.

With the Passat its just Ive heard owners complain of turbo failures, electric handbrake and sensor problems but I know no car is perfect.

V70 sounds good as described by bennyc as there will be a large dog in it sometimes.
I have no knowledge of PSA's HDi in the 508, I just like the look of the car.

Im drawn to the A6 but thats just because its a lot of car for the money and with so many sold they cant be that troublesome or expensive to run, strange how A6 and A4 are similar price used.

So am I missing any big no-no's like the Insignia with its flywheel and electrical issues, i40's clutch or BMW oil pump problems?

That’s a bit pricey I think. Relative got an identical one with similar mileage and slightly better spec for €2500 less than that a few weeks ago. (Also dealer sale)

If you can somehow get into an A6 C7 model within budget there's nothing on that list to touch it. Step above everything else on that list. You will have to go back to the very earliest models in 2011 but will still be scraping the bottom of the barrel so maybe a bit tight for you since you are prioritising reliability over spec.
There's loads of c6 models in budget but it's a mid 2000s design and has been replaced twice at this stage. Well plenty of saloons anyway might be a few estates thrown in.

You'll get onto anything else on that list and have plenty of choice.

They are all pretty capable cars.

Ford Mondeo Estate, Citroen C5 estate.

As for the Peugeot HDi engines they are very reliable. Sister has the 508 saloon wit the diesel engine and never had a problem with it. Brother has a 207 with the 1.6 hdi engine and again never a problem and plenty of power in both of them too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

my Kia ceed 1.6crdi seems to be going well enough drive donegal to Dublin ferry and across to Yorkshire yesterday.

even though the boot is supposed to only be 100 litres smaller than the old Octavia. the flat load area and all the clubby holes beneath the boot make it feel a lot smaller

but I'm only carry piles of bike stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 154 ✭✭Maruney

Thanks everyone, going to test a 508 1.6 HDi, purely based on the fact I like the looks and have never driven one and if relatively reliable its definitely a contender.
Basically 10k to spend on an estate, needs to be fairly reliable without huge running costs and have leather.

I'm seeing 5 series and A6 as already mentioned are in budget but Im worried about running costs.
This money was originally going on a motorcycle but decided to stop riding altogether so some performance will be nice too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The 508 2.0 HDi engine is a much safer bet than the 1.6 HDi.

10K would see you in a nice Passat or a Superb. As said above the 2.0hdi would be a better engine if you can find a 508 with one.

Any 5 series you'd pick up for 10k would likely have timing chain issues at some point in its life, don't get me wrong they don't go in all of them but its something I would not like to be worrying about. Having said that I have a 5 series touring and I love it!! Definitely one of the best estate cars I've owned over the past few years. An A6 repair costs can be high enough depending on what goes wrong.

Im going to look at this, garage hasn't the best rep though.
But the car is well spec.'d with low milage, not really a bargain though.

Not a million miles away from the A4, but a lot more car for not a lot more money

Nearly have my shortlist together now, hope to view/buy by next weekend.
    All are estate, budget 10k.
All comments welcome - been helpful so far.

    Toyota Avensis (TR 2.0 D4D)
    Mazda 6 (SE 2.2 Tourer)
    Hyundai I40 (1.7 Style)
    Skoda Superb (2.0 Combi)

I'll consider, not necessarily these exact ones but if more pop up:

    Merc C Class (c200 CDI)

I would try and get a D4 2.0 if going Volvo, or at least test drive one before hand to have a comparison.
Actually I would try to get this and keep the remaining 5K on Tax and upkeep, the D5 auto would be hard to beat :D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭selectamatic

I too would scratch the mazda off the list.

The engines take far too much minding to stay reliable.

If you buy a used one there's no guarantee it hasn't had it's oil diluted with diesel at some point in its life and once the damage is done it's only a matter of time till something expensive breaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 365 ✭✭dogg_r_69

To add my 2 cents, when I changed, I read Alot about Hyundai's and gearbox trouble so I ruled them out. Bought an Avensis tr estate Been really happy with it Probably not the best on diesel (about 45mpg) but it's a big enough car.

    Guys,

Is the Mazda oil issue common enough to avoid the car?

Seems to be common enough and all cars have their issues of course, but I am reading lot of examples of diesel mixing with the oil and dangerously raising the level requiring frequent oil changes hoping no damage is done - makes it hard to inspect a second hand buy.

I40's are plentiful and my wife really wants one while Im edging towards the Superb, so same question as with the Mazda are we likely to face clutch and gear issues if not previously fixed?

Are these examples of bad news travelling fast because I dont see any other common issues with the Mazda or Hyundai.

The i40 is a terrible and outdated thing these days imo.

I have a 2012 Avensis Estate from new, almost 200000 Km on the clock now and the only issue was a front light cluster had to be replaced due to 'grounding issue'. Very happy with the car and boot size - the boot is flush with the bumper which is my preference for lifting things in and out of the boot.

The only reason I'm thinking of changing it - I'd like a similar size car but with a little more ground clearance for getting in an out of the driver seat. Its not the lowest car by any means.

...cant think of a reason not to get the Superb to be honest.

As boring estates go it seems the best option all round, Ive accepted performance is not an option in Ireland with running costs and availability.
I go to the UK a bit and the amount of RS4's etc would make you jealous with way cheaper tax and insurance

We have a v70 d5. Its a great unit and very little trouble. We have 2 big dogs and 3 kids. The car takes them all with ease. Great for camping trips too. We will probably move it on next year to a merc e300 hybrid or some such. I think its about the closest I can get size and spec wise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,424 ✭✭✭bernard0368

The Superb is a great car. I have 250k on mine and never had any problems with it.
Boot space is huge. I find it very economical but then I did come from a L200.

I had my heart set on a V70 for a long time, but ended up with the E300 Hybrid. I've had one issue with it (charged air leak) but all in all it's a very hard car to fault I think, particularly when VRT is half what a similar 520d is.

Very good to know! Thanks for that. I will keep an eye out for some UK units. Although if brexit goes through I am sure we will see more import duties VRT mark 2 maybe? LOL

Yes, have my eye on a 150 DSG with the tech pack and sunroof. Can get a 184 manual tech pack with no sunroof for same money. Hard to get one that ticks all the boxes. Not certain I want the DSG. Kinda scared of it!

I keep being tempted by the Mazda 6, a 2015 one with 12 main dealer stamps in the service history has popped up, surely the diesel in engine oil issue would have been sorted if an issue on that particular car?

Any private sales I called today went unanswered which was annoying.
