From reading between the lines in various media reports, the "YouTuber" is seemingly a crytofascist and an icon of the disaffected male, often violent extremists.
His name popped up again in an article published today about another horrific crime. I don't watch his stuff but I'm intrigued by why a producer of immature fluff is increasingly linked to extremist and/or depraved acts.

It's because it's regarded as "immature fluff", or simply not regarded at all, by many. To some, it becomes a badge of the counterculture.

Don't think it matters what he actually says or does, it's just the fact that most people / "the mainstream" don't "get it".

He makes fun of SJWs in some of his videos.

Therefore he is a Nazi to these types and must be silenced.

Think the conversation is a bit more nuanced than that to be honest. When the New Zealand shooter who killed 50 people is telling people to 'subscribe to PewDiePie' in his manifesto and his name crops up in the Ana Kriegel case, questions are bound to be raised.

Do I think he's a neo-nazi corrupting innocent minds? Of course not, but he's got an unbelievably large young and impressionable audience and with that comes a responsibility that he hasn't always lived up to.

Is there a theme to his videos? They look like an incoherent mess.

Curious to know why he has 96m subs.

Humans have a natural inclination towards searching for the subversive. The 'ODD'. The beauty of degeneracy, the unorthodox or the avant garde.

Sometimes in this search less developed souls get trapped in a rabbit hole of something seemingly 'new' or interesting. When really it's just a short cut to prick ville. It's just the third fourth fifth or sixth Reich or whatever number we are on now doing it's annual round again.

True degeneracy is Oscar Wilde. But only insofar as he was associated with the decadent art movement.

You see PewDiePie is a swedish straight white man. And he seems pretty 'NORMAL' it's got to be boring. I mean you have to be drawn to something right?

The best of the subversive is really just there to coerce you down the highway to heaven.

It looks like the Addams Family but really it's the Partridge family just less cold and less judgemental.

PewDiePie got butt ****ed and quite lost up the rabbit hole of his own ass.

He paid a guy to hold up a sign saying 'KILL ALL JEWS'.

He gave a shout out to a straight up Nazi channel on youtube.

Or the degeneracy of beauty in his case. He does seem a priveleged white male, in the looks department at least jesus man why’s wrong with you get out of the bedroom go off to the far east or something and conquer your hordes of female fans. Piewdiepie the Nazi; gets weirder

Exactly. But people born to normal rarely understand what it's like to be weird or even have a genuine viewpoint or culture that is considered weird.

So they go out and search for one. Like finding the cool weird place to hang that no one has found out about.

Sometimes successfully and they learn a lot.

He is isolated I guess and with bad judgement.

He got caught in the whole 'I am so real' fake crap.

The thing is not everyone has humble beginnings. He came from a very well to do family.

His mother was a CIO and his father a corporate executive.

I doubt he has ever had to take anything too seriously.

Reminds me of the crowd in Northern Ireland who protested Frankie Boyle's comedy show because he made fun of someone in a wheelchair. Basically the thought police are on their usual patrol and happened across someone who they didn't like and wanted to take down a peg or two.

"oi you got a license for that joke? no!? into the gulag you go!"

Because after his first two slip ups; displaying a banner saying "death to all jews" (wow what a random thing to have unveiled on your video just a joke obviously), and shouting "what a ****ing n****r" in the middle of a stream (completely innocent sure everyone shouts that when inconvenienced), he has become much better with his dogwhistling, the guy's a sociopath.

True. A lot of parents don't let their kids online until around 13 and still supervised.

From what I gather (open to correction) he started off as just a bit of a piss-taker but an overall reasonable guy, fairly gently poking fun at the perpetually offended over nothing (no harm there imo) leading to a surge in fans, among them the more hardline... which led to him upping his piss-taking in a more shocking way/possibly showboating for his more extreme fans.

Bit melodramatic. Freedom of speech goes both ways. I wouldn't protest myself but they are just expressing themselves also.

I don't know about Ana Kriegel, but the manifesto of the Kiwi case was filled with a bunch of satirical references to modern culture, such as "Fortnite led me to floss over the bodies of those I killed" and the Navy Seal meme/copypasta. I see no reason the Pewdiepie one wasn't another of the same.

    https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2019/03/the-shooters-manifesto-was-designed-to-troll/585058/

Significant portions of the manifesto appear to be an elaborate troll, written to prey on the mainstream media’s worst tendencies. As the journalist Robert Evans noted, “This manifesto is a trap … laid for journalists searching for the meaning behind this horrific crime. There is truth in there, and valuable clues to the shooter’s radicalization, but it is buried beneath a great deal of, for lack of a better word, ‘****posting.’”

He seems a decent guy. A bit of a piss taker that made a few bad calls along the way.

The death to all Jews video was actually pretty funny. The point was that he gave them such a mad request he never expected them to do it. The video he put up was a reaction to how unbelievable it was. The whole thing was reported out of context.

He has also directly raised literally millions for various charities. This rarely gets a mention.

I take it that it's something to be watched on youtube. Don't people get paid for the amount of watches they got on youtube? I don't want to reward the creation of stupid stuff. Even to search it makes me feel I'm doing the world a disservice.

In fairness you can cut out the middle man on that one too. That is the same nonsense that is levelled against computer games too. You can literally cut out "pewdiepie" from the above and put in "Computer Games" and make the same point :)

I just randomly watched 5 of his videos after the Analytics one. The worst accusation I can level against the guy is being completely boring - albeit it in a slightly amusing Swedish accent.

I'm not really a big fan, but over the years I've caught a good few of his videos and usually end up watching the controversies around him.

For one, he's no Nazi. What happens is that various big media outlets decide to take on the number one YouTuber and make some money off him.

A very quick look on YouTube shows 96,662,635 million subscribers. That's incredible for one person to have amassed on their own, and of course they're going to have some nutters.

People who think he's a cryptofacist or a Nazi really, really should watch the source videos the media uses, and of course the counter videos put out.

Is saying KILL ALL JEWS alright?

I do believe he actually commented on that not long after saying it was in poor taste. The point was more about what people will do for money.

Hell, even Kotaku, a renowned "liberal SJW" gaming site took his side on this one and called out the Wall Street Journal for deliberately taking his videos out of context by editing multiple videos together, removing content and adding in additionals.
