    Hi all,
Considering buying a used 520D from Colm Quinn, mainly for the 2 year warranty. Are there any pitfalls to this ?
I’m guessing you need to have car serviced by them to keep this warranty valid?

    https://external.bmw.ie/templates/BMW06/downloads/BMW-Premium-Selection-Brochure.pdf

From the above terms and conditions:

    Servicing policy.
To qualify as a BMW Premium Selection Approved Used Car, your car will have been maintained in strict
adherence to BMW servicing requirements. In addition, any BMW car with a service due within 6,000 km/4,000
miles or displaying less than three service interval lights will have had the appropriate service carried out prior to
delivery. The only exception is where the vehicle has the benefit of a service package where the requirement
is reduced to 1,500 km/1,000 miles or one service interval light.

Doesn't say that it needs to be serviced at a main dealer but rather as per BMW guidelines. I'd imagine it would be alot easier to get warranty work done however if it stays with the main dealer for the duration of the warranty otherwise the burden is on you to prove it was serviced as above.

Other than that it's one of the best used car warranties out there.

I got it with my E60 520d. It's a good warranty and supplied by BMW Ireland. Covers pretty much any non wear & tear part.
I got my 520d from Quinn's in Athlone and was glad to have the warranty in case the timing chain failed (thankfully it didnt).
I got my turbo replaced under the warranty which saved a few grand.
I got it serviced by Keanes in Dublin to make sure the warranty was fully intact but I think it wasn't a requirement.
I got the car checked over by Valdas before the warranty ran out just to be sure.

For what it's worth, if you sign up to www.bmwfirst.ie on the basic package of 4.95 per month, along with free replacement halogen/xenon bulbs and wiper blades, you will also get 20% discount off main dealer servicing and parts.

You can also price main dealer servicing costs through www.bmwservice.ie. With the 20% discount it can work out nearly as cheap to stick with the main dealer for some servicing in my experience especially around basic fluid and filter changes.

    Thanks all , very helpful, I’m looking at a 2012 520D , moving from a 2015 1.6 golf diesel , am I mad?
Second baby has arrived 2 weeks ago and need bigger car , the 2012 is really as far as my budget will stretch, I really like the 520

You will be paying top dollar for a 7 year 5 series from a main dealer. One thing of note though is that a split folding rear seat is not standard on the 5 Series and being a saloon the boot opening is going to be restrictive for lumping a buggy or pram around in.

Are you buying from colm quinn motorstore or colm quinn main bmw dealer?

I called colm quinn motorstore enquiring about a 2012 bmw last week and when I asked about bmw service history on the car they said it was limited hence the reason it was being sold from the 'motorstore' rather than main dealer.... So I am assuming this 2 year warranty may differ from the one bmw Ireland would supply?

    Curious myself about it tbh.

For the 2 year warranty the car must be 6 years old maximum and less than 100k on the clock.
A 2012 is 7 years so outside the 2 year warranty that can be offered.

    Are you sure about that?
My 520d had 170,000km on the clock when I bought it and about 200k when BMW changed the turbo for me.
The warranty was the main (if not the only reason) I went with a main dealer.

I think the age and mileage limit relates to cars being taken into warranty scheme where not currently under warranty.

Not sure we’re on the same wavelength: in 2016 I bought a 2009 car and was given their full 2 year warranty. If you were referring to the original warranty Mick then it was long over.

I had a 5 series with the 2 year bmw used warranty - I wouldn’t buy another 2nd hand bmw any other way, it’s excellent.

You can also extend it using the official www.bmw-warranty.ie. I pay €416 annually.
Keeping a bmw within its main dealer bumper to bumper warranty is a no-brainer if you have the option. You can keep extending the annual bmw-warranty.ie up to 160k KMs or 10 years.

You can apply the warranty to older BMWs they just load you for it and then the second year for renewal they don’t as it has been under warranty. Sure there’s 2007 M5s out there with extended warranties on them.

Is that the comprehensive, named component or driveline warranty?

That’s fully comp bumper to bumper, for a 420d gc 152, with 78k kms.
You choose between 2 options for the excess and whether or not to have roadside assistance.
I choose €135 excess per claim (rather than a €335 excess, which reduces the price by €100), and I didn’t tick the roadside assistance, which adds €125).

    So I paid €416 precisely.

The prices are all set, are all online, and are not negotiable. I called them on Friday to ask.

Edit: if you’re skeptical, you can call any bmw dealer afterwards and ask if the car has the oem warranty, and they’ll confirm it’s in place.

That's really not a bad price at all for full warranty. Out of interest I tried inputting my reg to get a quote but getting this- "Unfortunately we are unable to offer you a quote for this vehicle" and gives me a number to call. I'm wondering is it because it's under the 2 year AUC warranty until November.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭sk8board

Not sure. If I put in my reg, it says I’ve already got a valid warranty.

Would also be interested in opinions on this.

Did you buy in the end OP?

The BMW 2 year warranty is one of the best. I would keep the car serviced with them for the duration of the warranty and beyond for routine stuff, as it will go in your favour with regard to any Goodwill out of warranty.

Given what BMW dealers charge once out of 2 year warranty there's no way I'd be back, use good independent mechanic.

The 20% discount with BMW First subscription brings the gap down enough, for me anyway, to stick with main dealer. Especially where good will comes into place. Not worth saving €50-80 once a year when a full main dealer service record could save you big bucks.

I'm mixing between main dealer and BMW specialist at the moment. I'll stick with main dealer as Wailin says for stuff that isn't much more expensive with the BMW First discount than the specialist especially around fluid servicing, etc. I get the consumable stuff like brake pads, discs, fluid, etc done by the specialist because there is a nice bit of difference in pricing on those items. Both are recorded digitally online and in the iDrive system too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,440 ✭✭✭Wailin

Bazz do indie mechanics have access to the service record for brake pads, etc? I thought it was only main dealers who could update it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,481 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Your general indy probably wouldn't but the crowd I use regularity are BMW specialists so they invested in the equipment. I had my rear pads changed by them a few weeks ago and it's digitally logged in the idrive. Dealer code is obviously different but it's in there along with the previous service history from main dealers.

Is your car a UK import? I had this issue when querying my own warranty. A quick email to customer support had it resolved and a quote emailed out to me for warranty renewal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,440 ✭✭✭Wailin

Yes I was thinking that could be it. It's a UK import but bought from an Irish main dealer.

High probability that's it. Was same for me, but I imported myself. Doesn't pose any issues at all, just means the website is out of sync with either reg plate

You can ring them up and they will give you a quote too. There are a few different levels of cover.

Yes I agree especially this, there's a massive difference in cost for brake pads, discs, tyres etc. so no way would I get main dealer to do these.

F10's are notorious for brake problems related to cheaper disks, cheaper is not always better. Take into account BMW first 20% off and the peace of mind that if the brakes do develop a shimmy BMW will swap them with the parts guarantee, versus your indy, and the choice is not so black and white.

These cars can be expensive to run OP, you need to be ready for that. My 2014 needed over €4000 worth of warranty work, this was main dealer, low mileage car. When the car is out of warranty things can get costly.

My pads fitted 2 weeks ago were OEM, same as what BMW fit, just didn't pay main dealer prices to fit them. I'm all for sticking with main dealer prices when there isn't a huge price difference or if you have warranty but you can be a bit savy around rotating between main dealer/specialist for different types of work too.

Indy can easily fix same OEM parts, sometimes for almost half the price - mainly due to lower labour rates, less fixed costs and less margin expectation on parts (BMW dealer needs to pay for that big showroom and "complimentary" espresso coffee).

    Hi guys

About the pull the trigger and pick up a new model 420d 202. I've done a lot of research about ongoing costs etc so I'm going in with my eyes open. I'll be keeping it for 8 years. Will I be able to get manufacturer warranty extended to year 8? Does it get more expensive year on year even with bmw service and average mileage? I have the 5 year service pack so again would hope to extend this to year 8.

Does bmw first discount include tyres? In that case it would be well worth having it just before bringing it in for new tyres? And it can be cancelled anytime? Although I'd prob keep it then.

I see the discount is now 10% but for 1k for tyres it would still be a saving

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭corklad32

I see tires are excluded under their t&c's. Never mind, still worth having maybe for just before bringing in for a service and getting the wiper blades done. No doubt wiper blades on this yoke will be €100 a pop!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,481 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Service pack cannot be extended past the original 5 year/100,000 km taken out when the car is brand new. Extended warranty needs to be purchased every time before the existing warranty expires otherwise it gets very expensive if there is a gap in cover. Extended warranty naturally gets more expensive as the car gets older and miles creep up as there is more risk that something will fail.

Tyres are not included in bmw-first and you would want to be mad to be buying them from BMW anyway, even with the bmw-first discount included it would still be cheaper to buy them either online or from a local tyre centre.
