Not using Social Media? What do you think?

I'm in my early thirties and I closed down my Facebook tonight, It had caused me alot of problems whilst dating some pretty insecure women, changing my privacy settings to hiding the friends list only caused more after that. I have a snap chat which I rarely use and just keep up to date with friends on it, I never used instagram as it is narcissistic central. I was tired of seeing political extremists sniping at each other, getting targeted ad's etc. I have a fake Facebook account I will use if I need to checkout marketplace which is very useful like adverts.ie

Have you cut the wire with Zuck and Co. or are you still on Social Media? It will be 30mins to one hour a day of nonsense in my life I can do without now.

I have friends who don't use Facebook but we text , and chat face to face more than I do with any of the " friends " on fb.

Call me old-fashioned, but I know what my friends are talking about by - wait for it - talking to them.

Got rid of the book about two years ago, and never had any of the other platforms to begin with. Once you get out of the habit of mindlessly checking Facebook for updates you don't miss it at all, in my experience anyway. Better off without the unrealistic world view that these platforms sell (as well as the info they sell to their customers about you!) and the unbridled idiocy some are driven too in search of popularity on them.

Of course you do and these "friends" do they tell you to do stuff, like set fire to stuff?

Social Media removes human interaction on a physical level, its the way of the world.

Best to just accept it and move on tbh.

Fair play on giving up social media op, now you can spend your time on other things, like boards.ie!

Boards.ie, the social media site for those who are sick to death of social media

You have friends everywhere, you just have not met them yet

Well done, the journey begins now.

I dont use Facebook, Twitter, instagram, snap chat or any others never have, while people thought i was a wierdo at first i notice more and more of my friends leaving it behind. They always knew how to contact me too which was interesting as i think some people use social media to message others simply because its free.

I still check in on FB the odd time, met some lovely people there.

Twitter is great for getting to know people or local businesses.

Instagram is for my food porn.

Tumblr is for my porn porn (yes it still works)

Your not including twitter and ahem boards.ie so? :D

Seriously though fair play to ya. It must be hard for your generation to say away from it since you basically grew up with it in your formative years.
I think you will wonder to yourself why you used to use the stupid thing at all, after a while.

Plus you might be able to be one of the few from the younger generation to walk around, without thier nose in thier phone all the time!?

If I was you I would get a phone without internet, and get rid of the smartphone altogether now.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I like Facebook and Instagram, so I use them. I hate Snapchat, so I don’t. I have a friend who has no social media accounts and we keep in touch just fine. What’s with the drams over quitting social media? I have friends who loudly complain about social media but go quiet when I point out that there’s no obligation to use it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,482 ✭✭✭Gimme A Pound

Yeah I don't see the big deal in having or not having it.

I have Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - it's easy to filter out the shyte on Instagram and Twitter, I don't follow any of the vapid stuff or the crazed discussions on politics.

Not so easy to filter it all out on Facebook as you still end up seeing some of it, but I just scroll past or don't read the comments. And I keep friends to a limit - no friends who are never on it (including family) or friends who sent me a request years ago and have about as much interest in me as... well as I'd have in them. People with thousands of friends on Facebook - that's just ridiculous. I've a fraction of a fraction of that count.

I've never had Snapchat though - seems pointless.

Considering most of these days are announced through social media it would be like Mc Donald's having a no fast food day.

I used to tell my father that the Internet closed at 6 and only worked half days Saturdays. That saved me a lot of trawling done deal

They could just pull the switch some day for the day no announcement.

I use Facebook to keep up to date with local news and business's because it's how a lot of business's communicate special offers.
I avoid people who have fights/etc with strangers on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭Sam Quentin

Fb has caused a lot of unnecessary grief and heartache in lots of vulnerable people's lives. Back in the day we all knew who Billy Big Balls was in the local community, now everyone thinks they are billy big bálls. Not everybody can be billy big bálls ffs lmao.

Often the worst are older people in my experience.
The one's who'd have always being fighting with business's neigbhours/etc. Use write a letter to the local paper or ring the radio. Now they turn to Facebook and they get a few like's.
Whilst they don't relies it. Nobody really likes them.

Is that all it would take to end a friendship? I mean, I try to add only people I genuinely have time for, but there is the person now and again whom I like but whose posts I find annoying (no doubt vice versa too :D) but jeez there's more to them than their Facebook posts if I like them in the first place!

Social media is nuts, people Facetune the f**k out of their photos and then get high off the likes even though they don’t really look like that in person. I can’t imagine that’s good for their self esteem and it’s certainly not good for people looking at something that’s unachievable.

Then you have all the fitness pages. People who their full time job is fitness and who go through phases of loading up on food then completely depriving themselves to attain the bodies they have and the regular joe soap looks at it and feels like a bag of sh!t for not being able to achieve the same with a full time job and other responsibilities.

Then add to that people who can’t do anything without posting it on Instagram or Facebook, like it doesn’t count if other people don’t validate it. I’ve seen people fighting with their other half and then posting pictures with them like they’re having a great time.

    It’s madness.

I would not be that bothered to be closing my facebook account...or telling people about it. But facebook does seem increasingly irrelevant and used less and less by people -in my circle at least.

Never had a FB/Snapchat/Twitter/Instagram account. The way I see it, I keep in touch with those I want to, and that is a small group. I have no need to see how the lads I went to school with are doing these days. Couldn't give a f*ck. If you moved to Australia, good luck to you, might see you at xmas for a pint.

Have enough to be doing on a daily basis without wasting 2 hours checking where my 2nd cousin went for a meal last night and exactly how delicious it was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

Left once but got dragged in through sports clubs. Easier to manage than trad website and free.

I can blame old Zuck for the ads, but the inane content in the feed is really my own fault for associating with such people. It doesn't do much for your faith in humans. It turns out narcissism among people in my circles was an iceberg. Without FB I wouldn't have been aware of the amount beneath the surface.

reality in this part of the world isnt too bad at all, there is a certain amount of ****ness all the time but. sadly work doesnt always payoff, it should, but sometimes it simply doesnt

Sorry I phrased badly - by working, I wasn't referring to perseverance in the workplace (happens I agree with you on that score), rather working to change things around in your life to shape your own reality.

There are a number of reasons why I am not on face book as the above post says

    1) People showing me pictures of what they are eating - ( I don't care hurry up and eat it and stop typing on the computer)

    2) People putting up those poxy motivational quotes (Go away I and actually do something)

    3) The latest cause fad - the colours of profile pictures are changed by people who want to show that they 'care' too. (Most of then are just following the crowd like sheep)

    4) Girls putting up millions of duck face pictures - hand on hips (Basically just waiting to be called 'gorgeous' as if the previous 50 images that day were not enough)

    5) Loads of baby pictures documenting literally every crawl and step a child takes (You love your child - I understand but that last image is not much different to the last - am I supposed to post awwwh to each one?)

The OP is right to avoid it.

How to avoid boards.ie is the next step towards enlightenment.....

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.
