Just totaled the number of players Leinster have used thus far this season.

55 players used - surely our best total or close to it?

Only senior players not to feature are Vakh, Adam Byrne and Conor O'Brien

We've used 8 academy players and 2 sub academy players.

We've used one AIL player on a short term contract.

Did you include Parker on loan?

I did. He's still listed as a senior squad member on the Leinster site

    Sites out of date. Fwiw.

I haven't seen Penny play Champions Cup either so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    But let's not start

No doubt there are some discrepancies but for the most part I don't think it's affected my total number.

Their list of senior players seems reasonably up to date bar Parker and I suppose McGrath

Their academy list probably needs updating but the only relevant players for my list of included people would be Hanan and Osborne who I added to my total also

Three players will require further assessment this week before a final decision will be made on their involvement.

Ciarán Frawley injured his shoulder in the warm-up against Glasgow Warriors and will be further assessed as will Cian Kelleher who received stitches to a facial injury in the first half.

Finally, Harry Byrne was removed for a Head Injury Assessment against Glasgow Warriors and will now follow the Graduated Return to Play Protocols this week.

There was no new injury update on the following players who remain unavailable for selection:

Tommy O’Brien (ankle), Adam Byrne (quad), Caelan Doris (concussive symptoms), Dan Leavy (knee), Conor O’Brien (knee), Max Deegan (knee) and Vakh Abdaladze (back).

What's the chances of Leinster getting a mid week game against the saffers in the rds if the lion's is brought to the UK? Would Leinster be in a position where they could Field a reasonable team in the summer or is it just completely unfair to the players to have them break up their summer break?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,024 ✭✭✭bayern

    would be ridiculous.

like pretty much all these Saffer plans they have, rugby industry have lost the plot chasing money etc.

The lack of Ross Molony in the injury update suggests he just wasn't picked last weekend. Odd.

possibly just wanted to reward Dunne with game time and give Molony a week off.

In fairness that's a good point. Molony has played the most of any Leinster second row this year

I'd imagine it's a vote of confidence in a roundabout way. They're giving him a week off with a much higher profile game in Belfast coming the following week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,024 ✭✭✭bayern

Yeah, there's no way he isn't starting at 4, if available.

  • Registered Users Posts: 30,308 Mod ✭✭✭✭.ak

I know it never happens, but we could have at some point all available for selection next season in the backrow:

    Doris
    Deegan
    Conan
    Leavy
    VDF
    Connors
    Penny
    Ruddock

All good enough to play test footie. What's your 1st selection if we're playing a HCup knock out game?

Then you've got the likes of Murphy, Sekora, SOB 3.0 etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,024 ✭✭✭bayern

depends on the opposition and the players form at the time...

But i'd say if they are playing at their peak maybe this..

    6. Ruddock
    7. Leavy
    8. Doris
    20. Conan

At this stage I think Doris is the only cast iron starter of any back row. After that you can choose whatever 6 and 7 is the best match up to negative the opposition's strengths.

If you're up against a dogged, tough pack then it's probably Ruddock and Leavy in to match their physicality. If it's against a team that likes to throw the ball around then VDF is your openside. If it's a team that relies on generating quick ball then pick Leavy and Connors. One to chop them down quickly and the other to force a turnover. It's a great position to be in provided they all stay fit.

I’d really like to see a Leavy, Doris and Connors backrow.

Horses for courses is a phrase I don't really like as I think it's just a bit of a cliche.

But when you have the luxury of talent that Leinster do assuming everyone fit and available, there would definitely be an element of selecting one player over another based on what they bring that can mitigate opposition strengths

Hmmm, you refused to consider this last week and you were a bit snippy about it too.
Was training earlier in the week, could just be giving the young guy a run.

wouldnt be the first time a player trained early in the week and picked up a knock during the week, that was unannounced.

Swiftly coming to the conclusion that you're a bit of a spoofer bayern.

For me, Penny stays in the XV. He's been great since his return, and I think the management will want to capitalise on that momentum. I don't think they'll care what number is on his jersey, having said that his play off the base was very impressive on Sunday.

I don't see me refusing anything, just putting out a possible scenario as to why Molony would be absent.

come to whatever conclusion you wish.

18 year old loosehead prop Jack Boyle trained with Leinster seniors today.

Against Ulster I think I would go with:

    1. Peter Dooley
    2. Dan Sheehan
    3. Michael Bent
    4. Jack Dunne
    5. Ross Molony/Devin Toner
    6. Josh Murphy

    16. James Tracy
    17. Edward Byrne
    18. Thomas Clarkson
    19. Devin Toner/Alexis Soroka
    20. Josh van der Flier
    21. Rowan Osborne
    22. Tim Corkery
    23. Max O'Reilly

He undoubtedly earned it based on last week.

I just think it's tough to overlook Ruddock back at 8 and I don't think Penny offers what he could at 8 as a 6. Possibility to move VDF there to keep Penny at 7 but I can't see it happening.

Ulster will be able to call on a serious back row. And there is a possibility of Coetzee playing still

Also. Scotts shift on Sunday was a few steps above monumental. A 6 day turnaround is a big ask after a performance like that. 20-30 minutes off the bench might be just the ticket for him
