I believe he will be studying "Film Studies" or "Theatre" at Trinity.

Rule bending nonsense hope this causes uproar especially for students struggling to meet such high fees

    Trinity waives fees for student.

    Nothing to see here.

It's quite simple. Halawa's profile has him an an advantage. If they didn't waive his fees, he'd kick up a media fuss & Trinity's standing would be damaged internationally. All rather cynical, but both sides win here.

Plenty of money in that family no reason why he could not pay

Ah yes, he’s just going to blow it up isn’t he?

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

Did anyone read the article by the way?

He would have had to pay the fees of that of an international student (despite being Irish) because he spent three of his last 5 years abroad.

However, they took into acccount that why he was abroad (being kept in prison without trial) and waived that rule, so he’ll pay the fees of an Irish student instead.

No doubt people will ignore this and continue to be outraged without even educating themselves.

The article is pretty clear on the "why".

It doesn't seem unreasonable to me tbh

We should always remember him and his supporter (including the vile Zappone) chanting Alluah Akbar at Dublin Airport upon his return.

If he reads some of the posts on this thread he'll be left with no doubt anyway.

People should probably read the article before they get all hot and bothered.

By the way, this is old news. People were getting outraged about it two weeks ago before it was all cleared up and they went back into their holes.

You know what allahu akhbar actually means, don’t you?

Don’t mistake it as anything more than it is because some terrorists say it.

Commonly ppl think it means god is great, but there’s a very important difference to what it actually translates as

Someone start up the After Hours right-wing outrage machine!

Oh what's that, it's permanently running and the levels of whinging could power Ireland for decades if only we could harness them? Well that's just dandy.

So now all that's left is to fill 30 or so pages with anti-muslim alt-right claptrap. Have at it lads.

It literally translates to ‘God is greatest’.

Don’t let the facts get in the way of an agenda, I suppose.

EDIT: That post is completely different to the one I quoted. Why did you edit it? You realise your original post was wrong?

    Basically the above

It means “allah is greatest”. Not allah is great. No. A step further.

So basically it is a cry that asserts allahs superiority and dominance over everything

About time this poor fella had a bit of luck. Was shocking to see him try to go to the cinema over in Egypt and accidentally end up being a speaker at a Muslim Brotherhood protest.

    Yes
I do know what it means thank you.

He was (and to many still is) a suspected Islamist sympathiser. If you can’t understand that some would object to the phrase being chanted in a western airport in 2017 by that very same suspected Islamist sympathiser and his supporters, well what can I say.

That phrase has been used long before Islamic terrorism was a thing. If you’re afraid of a fella using it because he’s a Muslim then you need a reality check.

Sorry. Can’t let you engage in silly word play.

It’s far more assertive and domineering than in the name of the father

The phrase is literally saying allah is dominant over everything and everyone.

Including western society and basic human rights.

    But you knew that right?

No. Try to fully read the posts and not just the bits you’d like to see.

He was viewed as (and still is in some quarters) as an Islamist sympathiser. Chanting that phrase in Dublin Airport in 2017 was very inappropriate to say the least.

Zappone, in particular, should be remembered for her part in it.

It was beyond ironic to see zappone of all ppl, a lauded liberal lesbian politician standing there in the middle of it all. Trying to ignore the roaring and screaming as best she could.

Because some scumbag extremists use it before carrying out their acts of evil?

It was an everyday term that nobody had an issue with until extremists started using it. Use of that term does not mean they’re ISIL sympathisers.

    Seriously?

I remember the live radio coverage on the morning in question and the unearthly screeching that was going on in the background when he arrived into the arrivals hall - she as a liberal lesbian well educated politician actually joined in ??

Even tho she knew full well it was and is the battle cry of despicable anti gay regimes like saudi and the isis controlled territories to name two??

    Tell me this isn’t true???

It’s nice and simple. An airport in 2017 is not the place to chant slogans that have been appropriated by and widely used by groups who seek to perform terrorist acts. Whether by said groups at the time or not.

The fact that Halawa was viewed by many as an Islamist sympathiser made it even more inappropriate.

Zappone is the near definition of a wooly headed progressive and useful idiot with a 100% successful irony bypass.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
