No point in separate threads for book readers and non book readers any more

Apologies for posting this as a stand alone thread but there is no need to separate these categories any more surely and we can merge them and all get along.

There are some excellent points and posters in both that have to duplicate posts

Yeah, the conversations in each are the same apart from a little bit of lore.

A book-readers megathread would probably work well instead of individual ones each week. And the weekly ones can only have TV show info.

The non book readers disagreed when it was brought up after last season which is why they are still separate.

Tbh I can see some stuff in the non-book readers thread even for this most recent episode that book readers would have a different viewpoint on. Specifically Thormund's boasts about killing a Giant as a kid.

No thanks. I'm slightly miffed at mention of the books in the non-book thread if I'm being honest. Some people literally started a post with "In the books...". How hard is it to read the thread title.

When they do report them and we'll move them to the appropriate thread (and ban repeat offenders for the season) as I'm not going to try to read all the ongoing threads to spot every issue :)

    Its been nonsense for ages.

But some people have been abnormally sensitive about it.

There is really no need for it at all anymore. It just stifles discussion to split it out like this.

    I disagree.

The last two books (and even parts of the third) vary wildly from the show adaptation.

Book readers can't really spoil much for people who watch the show anymore but they can now spoil it for people who want to read the books after.

    Why?

I dont understand this issue? Do you also get miffed if people mention that they read a cast member interview and say something about it?

The storyline is deepened by the books and other extended material.

How that can miff someone is baffling to me? You just want the simplest version of the story possible? Or what?

What harm does it do you to know more about the story?

I think it works because book readers are talking about it from a different perspective than non-readers, and it would probably just be annoying for non-readers to have all this extra lore / details in the thread that they have no clue about.

    non-book reader
    +1 for keeping separate threads.

    I think they're better seperate.

agreed, it's pretty obvious everyone is reading theories on reddit etc anyway so non-book readers are just as clued in by now.

Some of us want to read the books after the show has ended so don't want them ruined. I've unfortunately read a few major spoilers also due to people not being able to read the thread title.

I'd wait until they're all written to be honest. There's far better fantasy out there to be read, and actually finished of getting finished.

Don't have a problem with keeping them separate to be honest.

Really? Genuine question - why have you waited so long to read the books? I read them when I was on about season 1 episode 3. There is no way I would have waited 9 years to read them once Id started the show.

I do hate to break it to you, but so far the major book spoilers have already been covered in the show. For book readers and non book readers alike.

And the books are not finished yet. So book readers are also experiencing spoilers in the show, and through reading around online.

Do I need to justify it? Its been a rule here for some time and it's been working. I'm not interested in whats in the books. I've read the first one but it wasn't for me. Found it too slow. It's a slight irritation when they are mentioned. It's been discussed to death and this what this forum wanted. I don't really read anywhere else about GOT tbh. Reddit is too manic sometimes.

The harm is that the books aren't relevant given how much they've allegedly diverged. I don't care that the starks had magic powers. I don't care that Robb's wife never existed. It's not relevant to the discussion.

Ah the plot thickens. How about you respect the wishes and rules of this forum that's been discussed to death rather than suiting yourself. Go back to reddit if you want a free for all. Sure even reddit has the freefolk and the regular forum for those that can't stand ****ty memes.

No you dont need to justify anything, but I was curious to understand the mind set of someone like yourself.

Please, feel absolutely free never to respond to any post of mine! Much like you could ignore posts to do with books that irritate you you know?

    Thanks for the clarification.

There was a fair bit of talk about Beric in the book readers thread very recently. The non-book readers wouldn't have a clue about what he got up to and it's results. Simple things like that would be spoilerish imo. Probably best to leave the threads apart from that point of view.

No worries. I'll just report you if you break the charter going forward.

    Putting all that aside.

There's also the fact that a lot of people don't want to have to wade through pages of discussion about things that don't exist in the show and have no relevance to what they've watched, and wish to discuss.

The book readers thread isn't highly spoilery per se for obvious reasons, so much as it's often totally irrelvant to TV watchers who have not read the books, whether they ever intend to or not.

I would have agreed more about that in the past but we are all in unknown territory now as we rock up to the last few episodes.

I want to enjoy the show first. I read the first 2 books 7/8 years ago but there was so much variation it just got annoying. I'll wait until the show is finished or possibly until GRRM releases the last one.
And I get that most spoilers have been covered, but plenty haven't and I'd rather get to them in the books.

Also, as stated above, the books have gone in a much different direction; book-readers will have different opinions based off things that non-book-readers don't know about.

Most importantly, this has already been discussed and the majority opinion was that 2 separate threads are better. I don't see how this would have changed in 4/5 episodes (even if it was 2 years ago).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,860 ✭✭✭Ragnar Lothbrok

I finished reading the books so long ago now, that I've pretty much forgotten them. I will probably read them all again in the future, even if (as seems likely at this stage) they won't get finished or someone other than GRRM has to finish them.

I picked up a copy a few weeks ago looking for a good map of Westeros and skimmed through a few pages. I briefly read something fairly major that was massively different to what happened in the show, and it did remind me of how many differences there were as the TV show moved along.

So, to throw my two'penneth in, I'd say it is better to keep the threads separate. I don't even bother with the book readers thread anymore!

On that point, if he ever actually finishes the books, there will likely be a new series made some time in the future.

How do you read something which is not released yet short of a) stealing it or b) having a in with the author to get a pre-print version (and the NDA that goes with it)?

I'm curious, is there any non-book readers that want a single thread?
