Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Galway Fire & Rescue a.k.a. Galway Fire Brigade name

    Why is the galway fire brigade named 'Galway Fire and Rescue' or as its very simply called on G County C website 'Fire Service'

    It seems a bit daft that to ditch the name fire brigade for some corporate lingo which is has little heritage to it.

    Dublin and Sligo still have their fire brigade name so why and when did Galway change?

    Just wondering...

    Maybe because they are more focused on rescue than other fire services? In Galway they are highly trained in water and river rescue.

    Also, they are a lot less "military" then the other services you mentioned, wouldn't do marching as often etc.
    hence "brigade" wouldn't fit as much. Doesn't make them any less disciplined at what they do.

    There all trained now in water rescue emergencies you will see them training in the water at Jurys Hotel with Galway Lifeboat, think they are one of the few trained up to this in the Country. All very brave people along with all of our rescue services. Don't think I would worry about what they are called if I needed them.

    Of interest, if someone does go into the river in Galway you should call 999/112 & request the Fire Service, Irish Coast Guard & Galway RNLI Lifeboat ASAP.

    They all train together for river rescues from the Corrib.

    The name changed due to modernisation. Globally they are considered FRS; Fire and Rescue Services. The Dublin Fire Brigade still use that term; the DFB yet they are probably more known for their medical response than fire response yet "Ambulance" is not mentioned in their title. They can call themselves what ever they want once they answer the call.
    Shame to see the premises they have in Galway City.
