Smart TV YouTube app won’t play above 720p

I’ve noticed during the week that the YouTube app preinstalled on my 3-4 year old Samsung LCD smart tv will no longer allow anything to play beyond 720p, nor manually choose anything beyond 720p in the selector while a video is playing (the option for 1080p is no longer there).
The tv itself is 1080p for sure, and Netflix, Apple TV and other things work fine on full HD. The tv is on Ethernet via powerline extender and even at 720p on YouTube ‘stats for nerds’ the bandwidth is a stable 20mbps, miles more than needed for 1080p.
I deleted and reinstalled the app, still nothing.

    Any ideas?
