I will survive - kind of weird to be told so on another social media platform - one day I will get rid of them all - and then I will be happy :)

Two pages in and nobody has told us they don't have Facebook yet.

Maybe there's hope for us after all.

Facebook is one of those things that so many use, and yet feal ashamed that they do or to admit that they do - Instagram seams more cooler today.
anyway I use it sparingly, and today seamed the first day it was down . (so I was jesting a little :)

Presumably, Facebook employs a lot of intelligent people. So why have they failed to resolve this issue? Why aren't they telling us what the cause of the outage is?

I thought it went a bit quiet earlier alright... how did you know it was an outage/attack/whatever? I thought my friends had all just gone quiet for some reason!

Presumably, Facebook employs a lot of intelligent people. So why have they failed to resolve this issue? Why aren't they telling us what the cause of the outage is?

As a former (amateur in fairness but with half a degree :D ) web developer, this kind of issue is incredibly difficult to pin down. With a system as vast as Facebook, with so many servers, data centres, databases and constantly changing / updating pieces of code involved, any one of them could be a point of failure and troubleshooting involves going through them all until the source of the problem is discovered.

In this case, as the issue affected everything - Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp, I'm guessing that the fault lay either with a database or a database server. If the database where user information is stores went down for whatever reason, the whole family of Facebook apps would have died, as they did today. Given how long the outage lasted, I'm guessing their primary database server had a physical power outage unrelated to the building itself (as in a power grid level failure) and they simply had to wait for the electricity utility to fix the problem. Either that, or a serious fault with their telecoms provider resulted in data being unable to contact the aforementioned databases.

Another option is that they rolled out some new backend code for those databases and that this was faulty, but it strikes me as unlikely seeing as they'd surely have had the previous code backed up at most to instantly restore if the new one didn't work - and more than that, would almost certainly test such code in a sandbox before bringing it online.

Basically, it's the internet, sh!t happens, and it genuinely isn't always as easy as it might sound for engineers to rapidly address issues. With a behemoth like Facebook, troubleshooting in terms of going through every possible point of failure one by one will in all probability take a few hours.

    How would they tell people?

It's up to folk to look it up on Facebook's Twitter, or Google it - likely to be news articles based on a press release from them.

Edit: had a look at their Twitter there - what a bunch of little moany bitches there are out there over a free, non essential service. And threatening to change to another platform... Eh, like what?

All I can see is the "get started by adding friends" screen.

I've had the odd few new posts the last few days, but otherwise nothing dated later than 11th April.

    Tonight, no posts at all.

The mobile site just kept saying there was nothing more to show for me yesterday. I just thought it was more ****ing about from them to try force an app download.

That's all I can get on any version of it since last night. Still no posts, old or new, showing.

And it all appears to have completely crashed now - site won't load at all any more, and seems Instagram and WhatsApp are gone as well.

    Will the world end???

God bless good ol' Boards :)
