Final trailer, spoiler warning for certain character return

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Bloody 'eck, that is quite the spoiler to drop into a "final" trailer, by way to drum up enthusiasm. It's not like this was gonna lack hype given prior Deadpools and the presence of Wolverine - so why spoil something that significant?

The reviews seem to generally point towards an entertaining romp of a film, but the negatives ones really go for the jugular. Robbie Collins and Donald Clarke both give it 1/5 stars.

But based on the projected worldwide opening, I don't think the critical response is going to make much of a difference anyway. The film will be a big success.

I wouldn't take notice of Donald Clarke. He gave a quiet place day1 4stars. And that was truly awful.

I don't like the term "critic proof" cos it invariably tries to cultivate this gap between critics and audiences like they're separate species of film enthusiasts, but a film like this was always gonna render critics' response fairly redundant. It's a movie intentionally trafficking in, basically, having a self-congratulatory high five over the Superhero Genre itself, via arguably the genre's most divisive character; and for a lot of people that sounds like a turgid exercise - including myself - yet many are gonna buy into the idea of one more trip with Wolverine & all the nostalgic wallowing that come with it. Which is fine, I should add.

The whole enterprise from top to bottom sounds absolutely excruciating to me & at this stage wish Ryan Reynolds would just fúck off … but it won't matter what folk like me think 'cos this is probably gonna make Disney a billion dollars & suddenly "the MCU lives!" will be the talk of the town. I'm also a bit salty that it all kinda undercuts what seemed like Hugh Jackman's final performance in Logan … but again, who cares nothing matters it seems.

Got to be honest, found Robbie Collin's writeup/tear-down entertaining

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 738 ✭✭✭Paterson Jerins

It was awful. The story was so bland, no flow and so many things didn't make sense.

The characters were never developed. The cat was a joke. The end was rushed.

I watched the first film again after I saw day1. It is 10times better

I wouldn’t pay a jot of attention to Donald Clarke here; he’s proven in the past he detests things like the MCU so don’t even bother clicking the, essentially clickbait, ‘review’ would be my suggestion.

I still wouldn't write-off one person's opinion because they liked a movie you didn't like. I've plenty of reviewers I'd look to for a guide, but wouldn't take their opinions as gospel either.

I read it there myself along with other reviews and it's interesting, the difference seems to come down to whether you're willing to to be won over again by the MCU, or not.

I've no personal view on it as yet beyond it will be interesting to see if it will convince Marvel to stick with their big hitters in order to bounce back. Fantastic 4 will be the true acid test I think in 2025, not so much the other 2 films they have slated for release next year.

I'd say the net desire for Marvel will be for Deadpool 3 to give the MCU a shot of adrenaline in its veins; we saw that bump to a degree with GotG3, but it quickly fizzled with the follow-up films.

Captain America 4's gonna be as big a test IMO 'cos it's not Chris Evans anymore - so will the audience follow? And it's the immediate follow-up to Deadpool 3 too IIRC so presumably the most likely to benefit from any potential resurgence of hype.

How age appropriate is it. 12 or 15

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,946 ✭✭✭McLoughlin

Well it's a 16 rated film but for most parents/guardians ratings don't realy matter anymore "its a comic book therefore it's for kids" attitude.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Cinema is listing it as 16, and the trailers have had their fair share of F Bombs and blood

Yeah. That was just one of his latest I mentioned. But 4stars outta 5 for Day1. I couldn't believe it when I read that article.

Shred says it best about Clarke in a post above anyway.

    Very enjoyable tbh.

Nostalgia fest mixed with Reynolds usual couldn't give a shite style.

It flew for me happy id ignored all the trailers after the first one. Cameos aplenty and some genuine surprises.

All in all fresh superhero film but feel that the rest of the MCU is still overused.

MCU fans say this every time a new movie gets bad reviews. Then if they agree later (Thor 4), they forget all about it.

Will it break box office records for rated r superhero action comedy etc.,

Well, that's a fairly specific genre. But I do think it will do well. I mean we're not talking the last Avengers movies numbers but will probably break the billion which would be huge.

I have intentionally stayed away from the latest trailers because they get more and more spoilery. Now I know much of this should be intentional misdirection but I've heard more than I want. But it does seem like this is going to have impact on the next phase of movies so I think people will be curious.

Will be interesting to see week 2 takings…

    Edit: typos

Saw it tonight in one of the after midnight screenings in cineworld in 3D IMAX.

I was thoroughly entertained, similar to the previous two films. Here they throw in everything and the kitchen sink: loads of references in past films/events and characters appearing in the process, though it's not always clear if they will serve any further purpose in the MCU. It will be interesting to see how they will integrate Deadpool in the universe as the tone is rather different. 3D was OK, nothing exceptional. Some good pop songs included.

I think this will appeal to anyone that liked the previous two and I expect it to do very well in the box office.

Upcoming gigs and events: The Rocky Horror Show, The Pillowman, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Foil Arms and Hog, Nova Twins, Tanita Tikaram, David Byrne

I really enjoyed it, as most have said..fun cameos and surprises throughout. The constant digs at fox and marvel play out well with Deadpool constantly referencing them.

Id have liked a post credits scene hinting at the X-Men

Donald Clarke should really not review pop culture films .
