Hi guys, I am looking at changing all four tyres on my Ford Focus. It has the 2.0 diesel engine with 163bhp so want something half decent. Currently have Bridgestone potenzas and have been looking at reviews of the Goodyear eagle asymmetric 3 which seem decent on grip. Still have to get prices for these off tyre places around Dublin. Any recommendations? Tyre size is 235/40/R18.

Asymettrics or Michelin PS4's are two of the best tyres you can buy, you won't go wrong with either.

What are your priorities and budget?

    Mine for example.
    Wet grip
    Wet braking
    Aquaplaning
    Dry handling
    Wear.

I opted for Falken FK510 as they were a good price in 235-45/18
GY Eagle ASY 3 are a pretty old tyre now, and while very competent may not be as good as other newer offerings

Have the Falken FK510 on the front of my Mazda, no complaints.

They were a bit slippy when first breaking them in but now they're flying.

Budget would be approx 150 to 180 euro and priorities would be in the same line as yours. Would prefer if the tyre performed well on the noise front as well. Those falkens look pretty decent. I will definitely get prices on those.

I came from Potenzas, to full set of Eagle F1 ( the ones op asking about )

No complains so far. Potenzas had very good grip on wet roads, F1 pretty much same. I am not sure about this, but I find F1 quieter then Potenzas.

Op, in tyre shop you will pay around 170-190eu per F1. You will be waiting too. I got two in tyre shop and waited almost 2 weeks. The other two I ordered myself online for 111eu per tyre. Took a week to deliver and 30eu to fit and balance.

Same question, so I don't really want to create another thread for it: can you recommend me some tyres or tell me what to look out for.

It's my first time getting new tyres for this car - it's an A6 3.0 Quattro. I think they're 245/45/17.

Ideally fairly quiet (the Dunlops I have on the front are crazy noisy) and decent mileage and economy. I'm looking for something decent and don't mind spending a few quid, i.e. 100-150 per tyre. Where I live, I need to do a jump across a busy road going uphill, often in the wet (Westport Lodge Road onto the N5 going right), so good wet grip is important.

    Recommendations?

Always found pirelli p6000s to be decent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,909 ✭✭✭✭CJhaughey

P6000 are a very old tyre design, I ran them in the mid 90s and never found their wet grip any good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 159 ✭✭jimmad

I have a 2015 Focus 2.0 tdci from new, the back 2 continental conti sport 3's finally wore away, I had previously changed the two in the front for pirelli pzeros and found them rubbish, I changed all 4 last week, got this offer on black circles for PS4's https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/michelin-pilot-sport-4x22540-r18-y90-34910-black-circles-with-delivery-3184920 its like a new car again, unbelievable tyre.
new day delivery and a local garage put them on for 15 a corner. worked out about €408 with revolut.

P6000's are absolutely terrible in the wet.

One of the worst tyres I ever had on a car swore I’d never buy them again

Ditto, know nothing about them tbh, most of what I've seen are18s. Have 18s Toyo Proxes Sport( not too sure which, maybe t1) on an Accord. Reasonably priced(108) so far so good. Mostly motorway driving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,909 ✭✭✭✭CJhaughey

I have about 500k on the Falken FK510 now, mostly wet driving and I have to say their wet abilities have impressed me, no doubt they are new and have deep grooves but they cut through standing water very well.
New tyres are always quiet so its too soon to judge their noisyness or lack of.
In that segment of 100-120 euro tyres there are some very good offerings now, Falken FK510, Uniroyal Rainsport 3 and Hankook K125 seem to be very good midrange priced tyres.
Michelin PS4 are a great tyre but I found wear to be a little excessive even for my tastes and their prices are about 50% greater on average for a given tyre size except in 205/55-16.

I have allways just went to a tyre shop and got "new tyres" i never in my life asked for any specific brands or makes nor have i ever checked what was fitted :o i just new it was a new tyre. just checked whats on my car now . each corner is a different brand as they seem to all wear or puncture at different times. is it wise to go for a specific brand of tyre and stick to it for all tyres on ones car?

It is wise to have similar tyres on the same axle (same two tyres in front, same two tyres at the back). Mixing them make the grip asymmetrical, might bite back...

Have 245/45/17 Bridgestone on one car. Find them great. Quiet and very good in the rain, good wearing tyre too.A little pricey, but you only find out how bad cheap tyres are when you need them most.

Was standing in a car park today while the Mrs was spending all my money... I was looking at the tyres on cars parked near me, an a few had various ding ding brand, most had premium brands, Conti, G Year, Pirelli.. I was pleasantly surprised.

I thought most ppl were buying ditch finders.

Looking at the dings not the tyres some have learned the hard way....

I don't skimp on rubber as it's the only thing keeping me in the game.....

Saying that me latest car needs 2 for the rear.

Uniroyal are my best seller for the higher end bracket. Brilliant tyre for this country and not hugely expensive for what you get.

There only downfall is the weak sidewall but once you keep away from kerbs you'll be fine. ;)

Very true, can be a little floaty but grip is great.

How's the venture going... If I keep this new car I'll need a few tyres fitted.

I'm not sure how to read this, there's quite a few options. It's running 17" wheels. Should they be same all around 245/45/17?

+2. We have them on an MX-5 and it ploughs through standing water at speed as if it wasn't there.

If you have 245/45-17 then I would use that size.
You could also use 225/50-17 if you preferred a slightly higher sidewall for comfort.
I think the 245/45 will be cheaper though as its a more common size.

Cheers folks. I've ordered the Rainsport 3's (€436 delivered).

Local place is quoting €60-80 for 4 tyres installed, balanced and old tyres disposal.

    36psi front
    30psi rear

But if you have lots of ppl and luggage in the car it should be
    39psi front
    41psi rear

my last set of Rainsports (225/50 17) were €500, fitting, balancing, tracking and disposal included. Free coffee too :D

They're a serious tyre for wet grip and clearing standing water. Very good in the dry too.

Wear rate and soft sidewalls are the downside as said above.

I've noticed the opposite. I've been looking at other people's tyres whenever I'm at a red light and the vast majority are some variation of Chinese brand. Otherwise it's likely factory fit on a newer car.

For the most part everyone I know and work with is driving dodgy tyres.

Well Gents thanks for all the recommendations I actually went with the Michelin PS4's after. 580 euro all in for the four tyres wasnt bad for 235/40/18's. Have only driven on them for a day so far but the grip seems very good especially in the wet.

    Michelin premacy or michelin ps3/4.
Had a set of each on my quattro and they were both brilliant. Wet/dry Grip was brilliant and no road noise.

Quick novice query as I've never had to buy tyres before....what do the numbers mean? Only on my first car as I've always driven Mrs Shifty's bangermobile, and it has 255/35/R20's on it. I presume the 20 is for 20 inches? And the 255 is for the width, possibly? What's the middle number indicate?

Yes you are on the right lines of thought. See below for a handy guide.

I ordered mitchelin cross climates for a 235/55/R17. Was shocked at how much it's costing me compared to the ones I had on my Octavia. 195 a corner.

Great tyre though. I get to drive the wife's car tomorrow. :)

+1 for Discount Tyres. They were one of the better prices for the 225/45/17 PS4's I got. Bit of a wait but they're sound. Had a good chat about various VW/Audi's with one of the lads.

Kinda agree. I see a lot of unusual tyre brands on even quite new cars these days. Don't really understand paying big money for cars and then 'saving' €20 to €30 on replacement tyres.

Although something tells me this guy in a 161 Sante Fe would be better off with any brand of tyre that this yoke. One of a matching pair!!

    lads, looking for opinions please..

Looking to buy 275/40/18 Run on Flat for BMW F10. I am thinking to get Pirelli Cinturato P7. The same model comes in a couple of variations.

    is that a good choice?
pneus is €7 cheaper than oponeo. Are both of these online sellers reliable ?

Check out camskill.co.uk also. I'll be changing tyres on my F10 towards the end of the year and have been keeping an eye on prices. Camskill.co.uk are around €100 for 4 Goodyear Eagle F1s RFTs over openeo.ie and tyreleader.ie. If you have a Revolut or N26 top up debit card then you can even save a little more in currency exchange rates by paying in sterling.

Thanks for that Bazz, I do have Revolut. They charge £19 for the delivery and the price works out €200 each, which is same as oponeo. However the variation they have says OE BM which is good. Only one concern, it doesn't say "Run on Flat" and the P7 Cinturato comes in both.

PS: I had my last free service this week and the BMW garage quoted me €450 PER TYRE for Bridgestone!

Hijacking it slightly here, just wondering about a selection here. Looking at a set of uniroyal rainsport 3 for the mams 06 zafira, overkill?

Then not sure which option to pick here https://www.oponeo.ie/tyre-finder/s=1/summer/t=1/car/p=1/uniroyal/r=1/205-55-r16

    Any advice please?

    Hi,

Looking for 3 215/60/R17 tyres can any one please suggest which makes are good for Nissan Qashqai +2...looked at Michellin crossClimate+ in kwikfit northern Ireland for 370 pounds and GoodYear Vector 4 seasons gen2 for 366 pounds...

how about Hankook, Nexen or other similar brands?

Dave Mccan in Coolmine ind area has given a quote for Nexen @103€; per tyre are these good tyres?

Atlas blanch has said they have only tyres called Davanti are these good brands?

is it good to go north or can any one suggest a good place to buy the similar tyres or quality tyre brands in Dublin

also I will not be using one tyre for winter and one for summer, so all season tyre make any sense or just buy a summer tyre which is coming cheaper...

    Thanks.
