Small active cell passing over Athenry now. Very long rumbles of thunder and some heavy hail.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,033 ✭✭✭redsteveireland

And there goes another one a little further south with more long rumbles.

Thunder and lightning followed by hail just now. East Clare. Sounded like it was directly overhead.
Edit: another boom. Sounds like it's moving south towards Limerick. It must be the same cell that was over Athenry.

Moderate sleet with a bit of hail and a few flakes of wet snow thrown in for good measure in North Kildare. Very convective gusts as well.

Very loud peal of thunder in Cork City a few mins ago.

Very interesting looking narrow curved line of intense convection currently stretching from South Galway to North West Kerry, producing quite a bit of lightning, mainly over county Clare.

I recall a poster saying they were in Ennis so might get reports on it soon.

There have been a few seriously heavy hail showers in Cork involving very large hailstones

As an example, here's someone's Twitter post in Cork City https://twitter.com/dynamitecork/status/1229042411155918849?s=20

    It's a hail shower lads.

Some People obviously don't remember some Big Thunderstorms in the 80'8 90's that flattened crops in fields.

Or some afternoon thunder showers in the Summers of years gone by.

Great video but it's not something we don't see on numerous occasions every year.

Cold air aloft after the front goes through tomorrow with reasonable lapse rates over the relatively mild SST's, looks like a chance of convection getting going and among the wintry showers to follow in the morning could be some sporadic hail and thundery showers more so in the W, NW, N from early morning where the coolest pool of upper air will be. Windy on the coasts in a brisk and sometimes gusty W/ly which will bring wintry and some hail showers well inland.

Will see if there is some kind of line convection crossing the country during the early hours and going through the E around the time of the early morning commute.
