AWD LR is a much better car than the RWD in my opinion

I picked up an LR a few weeks ago, and the power in it is crazy, the stereo is much better than my RWD M3.

But the same as the stereo in the rwd, and LR rwd MY.

I've bought two Standard Ranges and no regrets. Do miss the acceleration of the old SR+ in the RWD Y but range wise I've never had any issues. Can get anywhere on the island with one stop (would be stopping for a break anyway).

Unless you have a regular trip that exceeds SR range but is within LR range I don't think it's worth the 10k extra. (LR RWD is better value I think).

Also the LFP battery which you charge to 100% vs 80% for LR makes the daily range pretty similar

the LR RWD is the perfect Irish EV for longer journeys, assuming the car size is appropriate to your needs.

personally the performance of EVs is all very samey to me, and the novelty wears off very quickly as there’s no noise and it’s all a bit too ‘easy’.

it was incredibly rare that I did 4.5s to 100kmph in the LR, but perhaps far more often that I do 6s to 100kmph, which the RWD will do all day long. And even then, the family HATED the acceleration unless they were given plenty warning, and the kids usually felt sick by the end of a journey guaranteed.

EV 0-100 speeds are something to amuse yourself with now and again.

    All very much IMHO

i looked at the three options and ordered the LR RWD, i didnt want to pay over 55k and i didnt want to have the standard spec so that ruled the AWD LR out for me, have order the LR RWD in quicksilver with the white interior. The SR would probably work for us most of the time but i think peoples expectations of EV range is increasing and i think the LR should be a better bet to resell in 3 years time but sure who knows.

I'm okay without the AWD version That is off the plate. I would only consider that option if it had the 7 seat layout (I've three kid 4, 7 & 9 so plenty of years to use them). But I can't find any sign of when that will be arriving. Or if it will be restricted to the AWD model like I believe it was previously?

So it leaves me to decide between the RWD and the LR RWD. The sensible voice says that I won't need that extra 100km in the LR 99% of the time and it's not worth 5k for the cussion in the summer trips. This will likely be my forever car (or at least 8 years) so trade-in value at the end isn't too much of a concern.

But I can't shift that other voice that's saying you are spending 45k whats 5k more 🤣. You wil llove that extra 100km. I must say I've a 350-400km range EV now and it's always something to think about on any trips away. As the kids get bigger we will be doing more and longer trips.

Tesla got back with a trade-in on the Nissan Quashqui €5700! Which i think is fairly good in Tesla trade-in terms. No private sales, no downtime between cars.

So the plan is now. Take the Nissan off the wife, trade that for the LR with a tow bar. Then give the wife my 232 MG ZS to trade towards the new MG S5. Everyone is in a new car and everyone is happy !

What about the right-wing white supremacist connotations of buying a new Tesla? 🤔

Countless sleepless nights lying awake wondering what the neighbours think of you.

if people were comfortable buying a bmw or a volkswagen im sure they will get over it, ditto human rights concerns over chinese manufacturers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,661 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

No way. Are you saying there are other manufacturers with similar baggage?

Of course, the back stories of bmw and vw is closely tied to the nazi party, BYD have issues with human slavery in Brazil, I'm sure there are plenty more.

Why wasn't this made clear a lot earlier? Would potentially have helped prospective BMW, VW, and BYD owners evaluate their choices with a keener mind.

I feel sick for them now 😫

People dont care about any of this stuff it's just fashionable to hate on tesla for 5 minutes it will pass.

If I ever buy another Model Y, I'll buy the AWD. Since I drive a lot on national roads, I make great use of the overtaking ability of the AWD when stuck behind Sunday drivers, and being able to safely take a gap to merge traffic from a standstill is another bonus. For me, it's worth the extra cost but I know a lot of people can't justify it.

Guessing the neighbours might already know. Don't need the Tesla badge to prove it.

I bought a ‘23 MY standard range and I really wasn’t sure about it. Kind of the opposite of you but I only do long distance.

But this is such a small country that I don’t really see the need for the long range. We always end up stopping for breaks and so far have got caught out every time with how quick the charging is.

So for me the only case where I could justify spending 6k more for the long range RWD would be needing to drive 320km at 120+ kph in the middle of winter, and that’s just not going to happen.

I think the “extra performance” is also not for me. It’s fun to put your foot to the floor the first few times, or if you have a passenger unfamiliar with electric cars. The novelty wears off quickly. About as quick as the tyres. The LFP battery has plenty of performance for most people and it’s not a driver’s car.

But to each their own. I think the standard range is the best buy. There are videos online of people driving the RWD in heavy snow without issue. I’ll definitely be upgrading to the juniper next year.

No. If I get referral points in the future I’ll buy it but definitely not paying out of pocket. I’m happy enough with the current performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,205 ✭✭✭sk8board

not surprised at all by the offers Tesla got from the motor trade for it - it’s one of the easiest cars imaginable to sell.

I’ve never driven one without so I’d love to see if there’s a noticeable difference. People who I sold it to, said it was noticeable immediately. I was selling it with my referrals over the last year or so.

I completely agree. The RWD is the best value and would have covered my needs but I wanted to own a ‘performance’ EV. I would have bought the performance Y because of the extra power/acceleration but I didn’t like the firmer suspension and the reduced comfort that comes with the larger alloys.

It may sound like I’m a crazy driver but in reality I don’t utilise full power most of the time but I enjoy the comfort knowing I have enough power on tap for particular situations

Its needs vs wants. I knew the RWD was enough for my needs but I wanted the AWD and could afford it.

Having driven a friends Y with boost, the difference is definitely noticeable from a standstill but when at 100kph and flooring it there isn’t that much difference imo

Unless your Quashqai is a wreck, you’ll get €7K easily for it on DoneDeal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,271 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

It's just the messing with selling it and trying to get the new car. Both of us have 40+km drives to work so we can't be without a car realistically for more than a day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,271 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I know it's even more of a personal choice that the range question. But how do people feel about the colours?

I usually like white but a neighbour has one and it's looking shabby after a year or two. It's a company car so he's not really minding it.

I've had black cars before and they are a nightmare to keep clean. Look amazing for 30 mins after a wash though.

How does the stealth grey (free option) hold up.

If I'm honest the black interior looks very dark, I like the white. But again anyone have experience with how it holds up over the years of kids rough housing. I've had a beige leather A4 before and it was really nice and hid the dirt really well 😁.

    Current saved config is.

    Standard Range RWD.

    Tow bar

    White interior.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,989 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

i really like the stealth grey, if it wasnt the default colour id probably have paid to get it (as weird as that sounds) i think itll hold up pretty well, i think the white interior lifts the interior a lot.

Personally going for quicksilver with white interior.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,661 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

If you get the tow bar added post-delivery it will be cheaper. Adding it as an extra pre-sale pushes up the price and reduces the VRT relief so it will cost you more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,271 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I wasn't sure if you could add it after. I've seen some talk of it having a different bumper. Prob needs a trip to Dublin or Cork dealer to have it done too. So I'll prob take the hit and have it pre installed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,661 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

The Tesla ranger will do it on your driveway - takes about 45 mins or so. Getting a a booking might be the only tricky aspect of it all.

I've personally owned 3 teslsa in the house hold with black interiors, and zero issues with them being too dark.

I've done work on 5-6 with white interiors, and some of them hold up really well, i worked on a 222 model 3 with white interior that was immaculate, and i also saw a 241 white interior that was absolutely destroyed from blue jeans, no srubbing would get it up.
