I’d have the 20” all day long.

It’s really a personal choice. You could possibly pick up a set of 20” cheaper from Greendrive?

Or they pop up for sale now and again on the FB Groups here or the UK. Hop on a quick ferry and be home with them.

I got a few private messages about my Model 3 so thought it would be easiest to just throw up an ad, hope this is ok:

Have 20” on MY , bit rougher ride but black wheels look very well on white car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭elgicko

I have 20 inch wheels, it is a stiff ride :)

If I had my time again 19" all the way with wheel covers! The difference.in tyre cost is significant. Also the 20" are very difficult not to scratch! I use rimsavers.

    So much innuendo.....

I'm actually thinking of selling my MY standard. Picked it up on 29th June, I have put 2.5kms on it, there was a trip to Sligo and another to Tipperary so that's half the mileage. I don't really use it to be honest, sits in the drive most of the time.

I had an issue with condensation on the lights and was not impressed with the customer service, was poor.

I also switched the car I had ordered for an inventory car ( the one I own now), they wouldn't give me my deposit back from original order, despite them saying they would. When I followed up, radio silence....

Just left a bad taste, coupled with not being used.

Tech in car is great though, especially for the money.

Of course they will. These were and still are inventory discounted cars. There are still some on the site ready to collect/order.

The discount is back to 6% now. I was told in Sandyford on about December 18th that you needed to pay for and collect your inventory car before they closed for Christmas at the end of that week if you wanted that discount (car salesman talk though). I was not expecting to be able to get it with a 241 plate.

19" will have more tyre versus rim so a more comfortable ride

There are nice aftermarket 19" rims for any Tesla that look really smart, are cheaper than the upgrade to the 20" Turbine rims, and will allow more range, less costly rubber down the line, and a smoother ride - while still looking rather natty.

    www.thenewaero.com come highly recommended.

Tesla has downgraded the Model Y audio system on the US and Canada site, aligning with the model 3 RWD. Only a matter of time before the same happens in Shanghai and Berlin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 707 ✭✭✭Happy_Harry

I think that is only on the Model Y RWD , no ?

I've joined the club, just picked up my AWD Y in Brownsbarn. €50k inventory car and a 241 plate, fairly happy with that deal. I'd probably have actually gone for it before Christmas if Tesla had taken my 3 as a trade, but because that was company owned and I bought the Y privately they wouldn't take it. Bullet dodged there 😃

Is there anywhere I can find more information on the battery life expectancy beyond the mileage or 8 year warranty. I'm considering buying a new M3 or MY (or even 2020 or 2021 second hand) and holding onto it for a while and wondering am I likely to get much beyond the 8 years. We don't do a massive amount of driving so not sure we would even hit the KM limit before the 8 years is up.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,289 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

There are no Model 3’s over the 8 year age yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭jobrien19

    Sorry poorly worded!

I guess more appropriate to just say Tesla's as a whole in terms of battery life beyond warranty as there is very little information online that I can find.

Generally, if they don’t go in the first few years within warranty they generally last. Like most EV’s.

That’s true, but I think this is an insurance question really - it’s very fair to say that there will be more cases (as a % of total) of EVs needing to be written off because of battery pack failures than there are of ICE cars being written off because of engine failures, simply down to the insurance replacement costs of a pack versus an engine.

I’m ignoring all the model S/leaf/fluence stuff. They’ll almost all be bricked eventually.

in the next 5-10years, it’s a near certainty that insuring an ‘old’ EV will be more expensive than its equivalent ICE is today, simply down to that additional actuarial risk.

Agreed, risk and repairability. It's rare an engine suffers a sudden catastrophic failure, if it does you usually have some warning and can take remedial action at your local mechanic to replace a few parts. Battery packs can fail out of nowhere with no warning and require total replacement. Despite that I'd still choose an EV over an ICE every day due to the comfort, general reliability, efficiency, no servicing (Tesla), immense power (Tesla), low running costs, better for environment, superior warranties, more tech.

Battery packs don't necessarily need total replacement, that's just a function of the immature maintenance market. We're seeing it happen in markets like Norway where companies such as Elbilmek start to fill the requirement for battery servicing instead of complete replacement.

They'll be a few years of pain as the market for maintenance develops.

You’ve never seen sudden BMW EGR failure or Timing Chain snapping 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,635 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Or the infamous diesel turbo going and bricking the engine.

    Never....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

    Or the ICE spontaneous combustion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭DrPsychia

Never witnessed a sudden failure but did experience the symptoms (rattling, engine light) in my old F10. It was a bad engine design, complex to fix, and long oil service intervals didn't help the situation. A lot experienced symptoms before they failed: rattling, engine knocking, engine light, white smoke before the chain snaps. EGRs issues caused considerable worse fuel economy and power loss before completely failing. I know Mazda had trouble with sudden failures in their SkyActive engines.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,289 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

What engine light did you get for the chain rattle? The one I seen was sudden. No warning lights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭sk8board

Those old ICE comparisons are all a moot point really.

insurance of out of warranty EVs (160,000km or 8+ years mostly) is definitely a big concern that’s being reflected in premiums and will only continue for years.

Tesla owners in the UK complaining about high renewal premiums aren’t simply being targeted by anti-EV-mafia-insurers 😀.

amazingly, premiums are based on actual data for whole markets.

Would high premiums not affect their resale value though? Then instead of replacing your battery your insurer would be better off just replacing the entire car with one of the same age?
