Raymond Van Barneveld Thread - Final Year

I think it will be interesting to keep an eye on Barney throughout the year as it's his final year and he is in real danger of not qualifying for any of the TV majors bar this weekends UK Open.

He is currently 29th on the PDC Order of Merit which is good enough to qualify him for the World Championships but not for the World Matchplay or Grand Prix. To qualify for those tournaments he needs to either be in the top 16 of the world or the top 16 on the Pro Tour Order of Merit where he currently sits 96th.

So far this year he has played in 4 out of the 6 Pro Tour events, he's been beaten in the first round twice and only got to the second round in the other two picking up a total of £1,000 for the four tournaments.

He has qualified for one out of the two upcoming Euro Tour events so has a chance to pick some money towards the Pro Tour Order of Merit in that tournament.

He reached the Quarter Finals of the UK Open in 2017 picking up £11,500 so that is the amount of money he is defending this weekend. He needs to reach at least the Quarter Finals again or he could slip further down the World Rankings.

It's going to be a tough year for him and he is in real danger of not qualifying for the majors, especially if he doesn't show up for all of the tour events.

some crack if he doesnt make the worlds
pdc will prob expand field for him or dream up a wild card option for ex champs

Wouldn't surprise me if there was a "wildcard" invented for him either.

To be honest i've absolutely no interest in Barney anymore. I don't really see why he's got a fanbase anymore. For the past 5 years or so he's got a scowl on his face most of the time he's on the stage and looks like he'd rather be anywhere else. He has also gotten in the Premier League on multiple occasions when it was undeserved.

Couldn't give a toss if he makes the Worlds or doesn't.

To be fair i think Barney is getting a hard time... if he had not of switched in 2006 then in 2007 and beat taylor in the worlds i honestly feel darts would be in a very different place.

Taylors stranglehold on the game needed as many challengers as could be found and barneys popularity and guidance of MVG cant be underestimated.

If he gets into the worlds with a little help from the organisers i wont be upset over it.

It helped massively and it was the turning point in darts but the PDC would have still grown anyways. Barry Hearn was relentless in pushing through the PDC name. There was still Anderson and MVG coming on strong.

So Barney picked up £2,000 for losing his first match of the tournament in the fourth round. That means he has lost £9,500 in ranking money. We'll have to wait and see how the other players get on before we know if he has slipped down the rankings or not.

Barney has dropped outside the top 32 to world no. 33 after the UK Open. This means he is officially outside the qualification places for the World Championships.

Is it still top 32 for WC qualification? I thought it was top 64

No it's the Top 32 in the world rankings and then the top 32 players on the Pro Tour Order of Merit that haven't already qualified through their world ranking.

At the moment Barney is not in a qualifying spot through the World Rankings or Pro Tour.

This thread is probably a couple of years late.

I don’t get the love in for RvB, he’s looked disinterested for years and appears to have a terrible attitude.

Great player in his day but time to move on, having him in the Premier league is turning it even more so into a reality game show.

Back in the top 32. He won more money today than the last 2 years on the floor (6k)

Can probably close this thread now. It's a shame but it was clear he was struggling and probably wouldn't have qualified for any of the majors.

darts is change fast , to lose taylor and barney so close together
how long will anderson be around?
its getting boring and predictable a while now

Was a sad interview. Really sounded a broken man.

Himself and The Power will always be the main men in my eyes. That 2007 final will never be topped.

Don’t think he had the motivation for a long time. It took some epic performances to knock him out of the Worlds over the last 5-6 years but that was the only tournament he performed well in consistently.

Hope he stays retired now as he has not enjoyed darts for a long time from the sound of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭sc86

sky might have been better of leave him out of premier league , seams to have finished him off
he deserved one last crack at the worlds

I don't think his head has been in it for a few years now. His personal problems probably haven't helped matters. Sad to see.

I was at that final in the brilliant Circus Tavern. It's still the greatest sporting event I've ever been too. Incredible final and incredible atmosphere. You could hear a pin drop while the players were throwing but the crowd were going mental between throws. I'll always remember Barney fondly for that match.

Cmon Barney, give it one last lash!

Too much of a legend to disappear into the ether on a random Thursday night.

I really don't think he'd do himself justice at the worlds. His head is obviously on other issues recently but his form in the last few years in big matches has been poor.

Still a legend but think he should've called it a day a couple of years back.

he wont get into the worlds at the minute , thats his main problem!

This thread is back in business!

I think being out of the Premier League will actually help him. Getting hammered every week was doing his confidence no favours at all. I still think he will miss out on the Worlds though.

He has a weekend off this weekend as he hasn't qualified for the European Tour 2 tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,616 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

I'm guessing Sky had him pencilled in for a few of those World Series of Darts events, hard to turn down free money and an all-expenses paid holiday.

Mardle referred to his 'commitments' last night during the post match discussion, maybe that's what he meant.

Wonder will the PDC/Sky/MVG pick Barney for the World Cup. A win there gets him into the Grand Slam.

I think bowing out in front of his adoring fans in Rotterdam wasn't a bad way to go.

I don't know how you can say that, the facts just don't back your statement. It's less predictable now than it has been for some time. Just look at the variety of different winners compared to when Taylor was cleaning up. MVG isn't doing that as consistently as Taylor did so we have new major winners like Price, Gurney, Aspinall with plenty of others winning non ranking events too.

Mvg is winning a high percentage of events just like taylor did.
The difference is 10 years ago when taylor was winning everything, there much much less tv events than now , no world series , etc
For me its at saturation point and for first time ever im finding myself lose interest in it at times.
The proper big names / characters are dwindling
    All just my opinion
Im watching darts since bdo worlds in 96

    For example
The grand slam was my fav event of the year 10 years ago as you got to see top bdo boys play top pdc once a year , over the years its got worse and worse.
Now the bdo players are in general so poor and its just turned into another tv major.
Various things like this form my opinion
I dont really care if 10k watch premier league on a thur night in holland

Hadn't discovered the game of darts while Barney was at his best, but the final against Taylor is probably the only ever darts match you can watch over and over again, and feel the drama unfold as if it were live. Think he should reconsider his reconsideration to reconsider his retirement and just retire now, as a legend.

It's probably to do with his sponsors that he can't quit mid season, sue the ass off him,he's done for a while.

Me too. It was an absolute classic. That Christmas I split up from girlfriend of 6 years. I was totally gutted. Spent Christmas alone in Dublin in my flat. Didn't speak to or hear from anyone over the 10 days. Went to The Coal Porter in Rathmines to watch the final alone. I was a big Barney fan and he certainly put a smile back on my face. I can still remember the 180 in the last leg. It was incredible. I will always remember him for cheering me up at that time.

Barney has dropped one spot in World Rankings to 31 after last weekends European Tour. Keegan Brown is right behind him now after his good run the tournament.

No, he reversed his decision to retire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,051 ✭✭✭boomdocker

Unfortunately a classic example of a once-great superstar of his sport hanging on just a little too long..

    George Foreman springs to mind

Fact is Barney is a pale shadow of the player he was 5 years ago, let alone the champ that won that great final in 2007
If I had one shot to turn back the clock and attend a great sporting event, that would be near the top of the list

The game against MvG too. Probably the best match ever at a World Championship quality wise, and the one against Taylor for drama. Did he hit the first ever 9 at a PDC World Championship too?

Another poor showing from Barney this weekend in the two Pro Tour events. He lost in the last 64 of PC11 and picked up £500 and then lost in the first round of PC12 and picked up £0.

He is a long way off qualifying for the majors at the moment.

Just a little less money as the Women's BDO German Masters winner who got 800

Barney has pulled out of this weekends Euro Tour qualifiers and Players Championship events, he confirmed the news on his Twitter page. This means that he cannot qualify for the World Matchplay now and is guaranteed to miss the tournament. Obviously this also has a knock on effect on his chances of qualifying for the World Championships.

Slides down to #31 in the rankings now and not competing at the match play.

Slides down to #31 in the rankings now and not competing at the match play.

Barney lost in the second round in 2017 so he'll be down another £11k after the tournament. With Jeffrey De Zwan having qualified, I think he'll be out of the top 32 when the Matchplay is over.
