Too lazy to do a search, very sorry.

AFAIK the clocks will go forward as usual end of March this year, but am not sure if the clock will go back in October this year.

    Does anyone know?

So, I should still put off trying to figure out how to change the clock on my car?

I really thought that this Spring was the last time we had to change the clocks forevermore. Permanent Summer Time from now on.

But hey, it is obviously not that simple.

I blame Brexit, all these very important issues have been sidelined.

Anyway, if anyone has an update, it is very welcome, and thank you.

Originally I heard they were aiming for 2021. Then I heard it was this year. No idea really. Brexit has taken over everything.

Whatever the European high lords decide is best.

Pity the folks with concrete sundials in the patio, all that digging and moving twice a year.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-eu-time/eu-seeks-to-scrap-seasonal-clock-changes-in-2019-idUSKCN1LU1O4
“There will be no more seasonal clock changes as of the end of October 2019,” Commissioner Violeta Bulc told a news conference on Friday, acknowledging that this relied on others following the Commission’s “ambitious” schedule.

The proposal follows an EU survey drawing in a record 4.6 million responses and showing 84 percent of them opposed to seasonal clock changes.

The Commission also says seasonal time switches are outdated, implemented during World War One and Two and the 1970s oil crisis to save energy.

“Newer studies confirm that the energy savings are nowadays marginal,” Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic said. “We are clearly heading toward smart cities, smart buildings and smart solutions which will bring much more savings than changes of the clock.”

Our government said they would have a public consultation on it...heard nothing, did the EU survey and voted for year round summer time...

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/irish-public-to-be-consulted-on-proposed-clock-changes-1.3648823
The Government has confirmed it will carry out a public consultation on whether the State should end the practice of changing the clocks in spring and autumn.
Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan, whose department is responsible for informing the general public of winter and summertime changes, said last month he had an open mind on the debate on whether or not to continue daylight savings.

His comments followed the European Commission’s proposal in September to end the biannual clock changes across the EU as early as 2019 and its call for member states to decide whether they wanted to maintain permanent summer or winter time.

The last mandatory clock change is set to take place on Sunday, March 31st, 2019. Member states must notify the commission by April 2019 on whether they want to opt for permanent summer or winter time under the new structure.

Anyone involved or take part in the public consultation?

Me, me! I responded to something or other a few months back and opted for permanent Summer Time. Never heard anything more though, that's why I wondered.

Was it the EU consultation or our government and their invisible public consultation?

What if we ditch summer/winter time and the UK doesn't.

Does that mean we could nip across the border for a last pint before closing time?

Hang on. Does that mean that when the clocks go back on 31st October they will stay like that? Because that's not what I was hoping for. I thought they were going to stick with summer time? I HATE it with a passion when the clocks go back and it's all dark and dreary :(

Good. Damn clocks coming over here and stealing our jobs and out using as a welfare charity!

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Mornings would be darker for longer and evenings a bit brighter in winter. But it's the dark mornings I hate more.

Forward and back as per normal, then that's it. No changes at all next year (winter time is normal time - as in GMT for us - it's only in summer that it changes).

If they moved forward and stayed there, GMT would move to CET, and CET would move to EET (east european time).

NB - this is, as far as I know, still at the proposal stage and not confirmed.

Brexit or no Brexit, I would imagine the UK will follow suit for the same reasons others want to drop the time changes.

I would rather it keep changing than keep GMT year round. I was hoping they were gonna keep summer time/CET year round.
Will be interesting to see what Britain does if this goes ahead.

The plan is (as far as I know) to go to summertime and never change back to winter time.

Can we not just... never go back to winter?!

Clocks going forward is the same weekend as Brexit, so I think the UK will be too busy that weekend to implement a time change.

I think the plan is to change the clocks only once a year instead of twice.

Whatever the European high lords decide is best.

They reckon we will be busy enough erecting a hard border (that nobody in these islands want) for our Masters in Brussels this year. Next year they will want us to be European time, just like they kept us tied to European interest rates (which suited Germany) during our boom.

I think the plan is to change the clocks only once a year instead of twice.

Assuming that all year round summertime is the chosen option there will be only one clock change on the last Sunday in March in whatever year the new system comes into effect. After that there will be no more clock changes at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,100 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

    So no one knows really.

Brexiteers will laugh out fkn loud at the efficiency of this proposal.

I know it is low on the agenda, but it is a marker all the same.

Why change the clocks at all? I cannot get my head around this. As you will have noticed!

Uh OK maybe a change for year one, and then off we go. Sorry I probably responded too quickly.

Simple solution would be to launch a synthetic sun up in a geostationary orbit,
shinning it's reflective rays of sunjoy upon the entire Eastern side of the Island (from 6am-10am, then 4pm-8pm during winter).
The West rains too much anyway so they can make all the butter and farm stuff over there.

They won't be laughing when the Prime Meridian is moved from London to Paris. That will happen if there is a hard Brexit.

    This is just so confusing.

So is it a once a year change, No change or what?

    And what is the result?

Have to say I am totally baffled now. But that's not unusual for me either.
