A romantic gesture is not what Munster need at this stage, they need an experienced head coach who knows how to win competitions, something they haven’t had for a decade other that the brief Rassie interlude.

POC has zero head coaching experience, and he seems to be enjoying and excelling in his national role, let’s leave him there. ROG has been head coach for 12 games and he’s lost 6 of them. He is an exceptional interview subject and has lots of assistant experience in winning setups but he has yet to prove anything as the main man. It would be incredible to see either return and triumph but Munster really don’t need to act as an apprenticeship now. They need a proven winner who brings authority and vision because as a province they need to start winning stuff again.

I had high hopes for this year until Sneyman got injured again but Munster really do have the players to kick on.

I should have said i don't think he has enough head coaching experience for this job.

I see Munster as a particularly challenging job. The deeply ingrained SA influence over the past 5 years needs to be removed In my opinion. The age profile of the team leaders (PO'M, Murray and Earls) also isn't ideal.

Andy Friend is an example of the type of appointment Munster should be looking to make. He had experience in the role at different clubs and was also able to adapt to the 7's with Australia.

Head coach experience isn't and shouldn't always be a prerequisite but i think it's needed here.

Anything to be said for Rowntree himself getting the job?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,475 ✭✭✭kuang1

I'd love Andy Friend to get the job. Reckon he could do great things with munsters resources.

Highly unlikely for any coach to move from one province to another though. :(

Not right now as I’m at an airport! But my understanding is he took over as Head Coach this season?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,209 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

They're right. ROG has only been a head coach since the start of the season. He was under Gibbes last year. His record (since Saturday) is 7 wins and 6 losses.

ROG is head coach since the start of the 2019/2020 season

    Gibbs was DOR

have a look at ROGs linkedin in if youve any doubts 😉

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,209 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

While his job title hasn't changed, his role most certainly has. As you clearly point out yourself. As the man in charge his record is 7 wins and 6 losses.

  • Subscribers, Paid Member Posts: 44,051 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

Ah here, he moved to La Rochelle in 2019 to take the head coach role.

We're discussing here possible options for the head coach role.

A poster claimed, incorrectly, that ROG has only 12 games experience as head coach. (which they have clarified already that they were incorrect)

    He doesn't.

Stop trying to play scrabble with the roles

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,209 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

I'm not playing scrabble with anything. He wasn't in charge until this season. Jono Gibbs made all the big decisions. No matter what his job title is, he has significantly more responsibility this season than he's ever had before.

His role this season is the only relevant comparison to role that's now become available at Munster.

  • Subscribers, Paid Member Posts: 44,051 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

I'm not questioning his increase in role since gibbs left. He's in that position this season to take on those roles BECAUSE he's been head coach for the last two season.

However he left crusaders after doing two seasons as an assistant coach specifically to take on a head coaching role.

He did not move to La Rochelle to take an assistant coach role.

We are here talking about who could take over the head coach role in munster, and a poster, incorrectly, stated that he has only 12 games as head coach.... He doesn't.

So moving on, no way ROG is moving to munster with what he has gong on in LAR

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,209 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Yes, ROG won't be returning, but here's the man himself admitting that his role has completely changed and while he prefers the title head coach he's defacto DOR with a lot more responsibility.

He's admits himself he's very green and learning on the job.

Pat Lam's number two @ Bristol is an Irish lad. Provincial coaching/playing experience in Connacht. Could be a good fit?

Mul? He's nowhere near ready for that kind of a step up.

Conor McPhilips would be a good shout as attack coach though.

    Bath have lots of Money.

I'm sure if that's where he ends up it will be for a very healthy increase in Salary.

I sincerely hope this wasn't recently sprung on Munster, and that there wasn't an opportunity missed to offer the top spot to Larkham before he decided to leave.

Outside of that, not hugely enthused by any suggested names so far. POC, ROG and Prendergast not ready yet. Critical that the right coaching setup curates the exciting talent coming through the playing ranks at the moment.

I think there's something to be said for a committee of former players coming together to do the job, it worked at Harlequins last year. Hey what's that? Former Munster legend Jerry Flannery knows how that came together, what are the chances? Flannery, Prendergast, Felix Jones & whoever else you want to throw in, to combine to form some sort of strange power-rangeresque Head Coach of Director of Professional Rugby.

Or just throw all the money at Scott Robertson just in case he fancies it.

Eddie o Sullivan only lives up the road

I’m not sure the ex player thing is the answer for Munster right now. Itwould be incredible were ROG to step in at some future date but Munster have underperformed for years and there are clearly issues within the club hierarchy that will need to be confronted, at least that’s what it looks like. (Better students of the province that me may correct me here). The playing base is potentially as good as ever and Munster should be really performing better when it comes to the top tier. A strong outside coach may be necessary to shake things up.

And that Munster actually offered him a new contract! And he signed it in July & used the Rassie -6month shopping around until I land a better offer-clause.

According to GT in IT the excuse offered by JVG camp is that there was a reluctance to resign RG Snyman and Damian de Allende. JP Ferriara is also off to Bath.

“I’m not going to speculate over the media about my contract. Obviously, I’m in the last season of my contract and my full focus is on the season ahead. I’m really enjoying my time at Munster, really enjoying the club and am just focused on the week ahead,” he said from the squad’s high performance centre in the University of Limerick today.

“When the time is right for contract talks, that will take place in the background. My job, as well as the coaches and the players, is to focus on the first game of a really exciting season ahead. A really challenging season and that’s where all my focus is currently.”

“I’ve been here a few years, an experience that I’ve enjoyed. We have a lot of stability here at Munster, something that we haven’t had for a while. We look back at last season only, each season follows onto a new one and we reviewed that."

So when making those quotes he must have already signed the new contract. Very poor form. Wonder if the IRFU will rethink that clause.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,446 ✭✭✭✭phog

Why would the IRFU want to rethink that clause, did they not use it themselves?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,018 ✭✭✭TRC10

Joe Schmidt has been basically confirmed as All Blacks head coach post 2023.

Does Scott Robertson fancy hanging around at the Crusaders for another 6 years, or potentially 10 years if Joe does 2 cycles with NZ, or would he fancy a new challenge with a view to returning to NZ in the future? He's still very young coach.

And don't the NZRU massively value overseas experience when appointing their head coach. Robertson has never coached outside NZ.

If Munster are willing to spend big bucks on players like Snyman and De Allende, surely it would make more sense to invest in the most in demand coach in world rugby.

Munster would be an absolute force to be reckoned with if they got Razor. He would do massive things with that squad.

Well Ian Foster has never coached outside of NZ. Hansen coached outside of NZ for 2 years in the early 2000s and had a really poor record. So I doubt that came into it at all when he got the job. That was also at international level with Wales, same as Henry before him. None of the past 3 NZ head coaches had worked at an overseas club/province I am pretty sure.

I'm also not sure how you've concluded Schmidt is basically confirmed coach from 2023 onwards.

Yes and was probably just off the phone to his agent. The 6 month clause is not fit for purpose. Erasmus now van Graan. Also Gibbes and Lam. IRFU may have used it to their advantage with Anscombe, Kiss and O'Connor. But it is a ridiculous system if you want to foster loyalty in a team.

You give a coach a contract and if it doesn't work you pay them off. If someone wants the coach they pay you.

"We're a strong group of people and that's the beauty of Munster Rugby - it's built on our community."
