Would be better to move Flannery to centre/full back as he'd be better suited than Ben for 12

That's 3 out of the 6 Year 1 intakes coming from Club Rugby which is fantastic to see , hopefully a few more to come in future.

Did it in 2018, not in a rush back given low vaccination rate.

Squad or the SA tour should be named in the next day or so

Likely to be without the internationals.

We look a little light in the 2nd row and back 3

Bulls away is going to be a real tough one

It'll be interesting for the league, to see how the SA teams go on home soil. Really tough run of games coming up now, tho.

Why do you think we would be without our internationals? Reserving them for the big 7 games (4 European and 3 Derbies)

Other than Conway they only played about an hour each over the international games so I don't see player welfare being an immediate issue

I'd imagine we will start all the internationals, they will be primed for peak performance after the past few weeks.

I could see Conway being replaced by another winger this weekend, maybe Baloucoune, so we could have everyone available with few minutes played, and I presume De Allende will be given a rest.

Edit: spoke too soon, None involved, per CookieMunster's post below.

The Examiner running a piece on Joey Carbery, says he is injury-free, good to know, and that getting match practice will help him get back to his best.

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/rugby/arid-40746852.html

I think getting back into rugby has been a lot harder than getting over the injury to be honest, because you’re out for so long. If you don’t do something you get a bit rusty and I’ve felt like it has taken me a while to get back into it. Hopefully I can keep improving and keep getting better,” Carbery said.

“You can do as much video as you want and watch training, but until you actually do it and get back out there, it’s a different ball game. That’s been the hardest thing really, getting back into the swing of things. These things take time.

“To be honest, I am loving it. Loving being injury-free. Hopefully try and improve every day and get better.”

None of the internationals have been named in the 29 mans squad. Some more players will be added in the coming days. Possibly players who aren't involved with Ireland this weekend.

Backs Neil Cronin, Paddy Patterson, Jack Crowley, Jake Flannery, Ben Healy, Liam Coombes, Dan Goggin, Rory Scannell, Shane Daly, Seán French, Matt Gallagher, Mike Haley.

Forwards Jeremy Loughman, Liam O’Connor, Josh Wycherley, Diarmuid Barron, Kevin O’Byrne, Niall Scannell, Stephen Archer, Keynan Knox, John Ryan, Thomas Ahern, Jean Kleyn, Fineen Wycherley, Chris Cloete, Jack Daly, Alex Kendellen, Jack O’Donoghue (C), Jack O’Sullivan.

Good to see Jenkins is back fit to train again, mentioned as part of that update.

"In injury news, Jason Jenkins (thigh) has completed his rehabilitation and will train with the squad today."

Looks like a strong squad to me anyway. The only player I'd be worried about is Cloete whose hot-head could lose us games on penalties

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,270 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

He's had 1 or 2 really good displays this season tho, to be fair to him. He's as likely to give you a serious platform to win the game with his breakdown work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,512 ✭✭✭✭phog

Or he could win us games with his turnovers, on balance, I think he's an asset to the team with the way the breakdown is being reffed this season.

Where are Hodnett and Nash and Osborne?

Based on that squad, we'll need another scrum-half, another second row, and probably another back three player.

I'd guess that'll be Rowan Osborne or Craig Casey, Jenkins or Beirne, and (Nash ruled out with ankle injury) one of Zebo, Earls, or Conway.

Or maybe a few of the academy players.

    Backs

    SH: Neil Cronin, Paddy Patterson,

OH: Jack Crowley, Jake Flannery, Ben Healy,

C: Liam Coombes, Dan Goggin, Rory Scannell,

    W: Shane Daly, Seán French,

    FB: Matt Gallagher, Mike Haley.

    Forwards

LP: Jeremy Loughman, Liam O’Connor, Josh Wycherley,

HK: Diarmuid Barron, Kevin O’Byrne, Niall Scannell,

TP: Stephen Archer, Keynan Knox, John Ryan,

SR: Thomas Ahern, Jean Kleyn, Fineen Wycherley,

BR: Chris Cloete, Jack Daly, Alex Kendellen, Jack O’Donoghue (C), Jack O’Sullivan.

Going heavy on the props. Teams don't take 6 props to World Cups.

Haley could cover scrumhalf in an emergency.

I initially thought that with the squad being named and possibly flying out before the Argentina game that we wouldn't be able to name any of the internationals

The line "More players are expected to join the squad in the coming days" would indicate that we are either waiting on a few players with niggles (Jenkins) and/or that we will get a few from the Ireland squad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,878 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

That does make sense actually... In previous seasons they flew out on the Monday before a weekend game although that might have been down to playing a game in Europe the previous weekend

Still, the youngsters could use the experience and if they play anything like the team that went over and bate the Scarlets out their own front door we will have a seriously good tour

    Squad Update

A 33-man squad travelled in the end on Saturday with Simon Zebo, Gavin Coombes, Jason Jenkins and Cian Hurley adding to the initially named 29-man squad.

2 scrum-halves, but perhaps Crowley or Flannery can cover as a third if it came to it?

That's a fantastic squad to send! What an experience for the younger lads

Stephen Larkham will depart Munster Rugby at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Larkham, who joined Munster as senior coach two years ago, is contracted to the province until the end of the season and was offered the opportunity to extend his time in Limerick.

After careful consideration Larkham eventually declined the extended contract offer citing personal reasons in seeking a return to Australia with his family and the additional incentive of a coaching opportunity closer to home.

Stephen Larkham said, “I only recently spoke about my desire to remain with Munster and continue working with my fellow coaches and playing group.

“That hopefully gives some indication as to how difficult a decision this has been for me. The staff, players, fans, and facilities are world class here and I am grateful to have had this opportunity.

“My family made a number of sacrifices in joining me on this move to Ireland and my girls’ adjustment over here, particularly with covid, has been difficult. I have to put them first now, and with a coaching opportunity closer to home this is the right thing for my family at this time.

“For now, my focus is very much with Munster Rugby and with a long season ahead I will savour every moment of working within this great environment as we continue to build in the right direction.”

Thats unfortunate to say the least.

Genuine question, if the keystone of your coaching ticket is away, is there any argument for not letting the remainder head away too? Its very hard to argue that the JvG philosophy, untempered by a Larkham figure, is any good for an ambitious club like Munster.

Think it's good to get the notice now so can plan ahead. Consistency in coaching hasn't been great last while but think what can ya do sure.
