    Good news.

Neil Tracey is reporting that Loughman is likely out:

"The loosehead prop departed early in Saturday's 25-24 epic victory against Ronan O’Gara’s side with a hamstring injury, and is set to have a scan on the issue, with Josh Wycherley now likely to come into the starting team this Saturday in Bordeaux".

Cian Tracey is saying that Munster have lodged an appeal against Nankivell’s two-game ban and that the hearing will take place tomorrow afternoon.

Seems a bit farcical to appeal the length of the suspension given they appealed the red card already and lost. They hardly expect a one week ban?! Just wasting everyone's time and abusing the process really.

I know everyone does it but I dislike the way Irish rugby has been approaching this stuff.

Really hope Edogbo makes it back for next season. Would love to see him and Aherne partner up as a TH LH lock pairing.

Hard to disagree tbf, especially with a more ethical lense.

I suppose Munster are taking a business lense in that he being available will increase their chances of winning on Saturday.

Gordon D'Arcy not impressed with LAR players commitment, there were a couple of passages of play at the end of the game which I noticed they looked completely disinterested. Sobering stuff alright. Can't see ROG hanging on to his job

Some say the sigh of relief was so loud it could be heard in New York

Not at all surprised with Crowley. He was never giving up on his Ireland career at 25.

Great news. Seems like he's getting appropriate remuneration as a PONI. Looks like the contract stalemate and kite flying of moves to Leicester over the last while were worth it. No harm to force the IRFUs hand to make him a PONI.

Now he can get on with the rest of the season with Munster and battling it out with Sam P for the Irish no.10 jersey. As it should be.

"Even though they lost, the application and effort from the La Rochelle players was evident. It was clear they were doing their best, and they came within a whisker of finding a positive solution. That they didn’t is down to a gutsy, character-laden display from Munster, topped off by a moment of pure rugby class from Jack Crowley in the form of that glorious drop goal."

Darcy's comments in relation to La Rog players.

    Thank feck for that.

Crowley was already on a PONI contract, this is essentially an extension of that, but with, id imagine, a much greater top up by the IRFU.

Good to see it done. I think this one got blown out of proportion by the media's need to feed the news cycle. Pro rugby contracts can take time to agree, especially when you've sacked your head coach mid season.

does this contract extension only take him up until June 2027 ?

The RWC is in OZ in Oct-Nov 2027

That's an odd take considering Munster has been announcing loads of contract extensions for players & coaches since Rowntree left.

I'm happy to have my off take. 😀

Every province will have sticky contracts every so often that take longer to sort. Those ones will definitely be delayed by coaching uncertainty.

I'd guess that Crowley and his representatives spent as much time discussing future coaching setup and investment in the squad, as they did his financial package.

Yes and while Leinster don't announce contract lengths it's very likely Ireland's 1st & 2nd choice outhalfs are neither on a CC nor contracted for the RWC.

    Nankiville ban halved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,552 ✭✭✭✭phog

Seeing that Nankivell is available this weekend, Munster must have some inkling that there was something not right with the ban and stuck with it

Personally I thought it a bit weird that they appealed after losing an appeal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,416 ✭✭✭letowski

That’s great if Nankivell is available, frankly quite surprising tbh. But with UBB have Moefana and probably Deportiere in the midfield, we could really do with him. Hopefully Loughman makes it, think we could a have decent shot again this weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,416 ✭✭✭letowski

I think possibly they appealed it on the grounds that the officials incorrectly determined that it was a shoulder to the head. And that Nankivell inadvertently kneed Prendergast in the head. But still surprised they got it halved because it was a reckless clear out by Nankivell.

I’m guessing it will be because he ticked a couple of boxes for mitigation (good conduct etc) but got no credit in terms of reduction of the ban.

The problem is that with a 2 week ban, you can only get 0 or 50% mitigation. My bet is that they argued zero mitigation was unfair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,552 ✭✭✭✭phog

They couldn't get zero as the appeal took place after he served a one match ban

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,552 ✭✭✭✭phog

Hearings are like legal hearings and often appeals are on the basis of how they were dealt with rather than the individual being harshly dealt with. Donal Spring was often successfully used by the Irish provinces in finding something to reduce the ban

A reasonable outcome. With my Connacht hat on I don't think I could have had much complaint if it was just a yellow. The current law interpretations invite these kind of grey areas.

Aki bounces Prendergast up and towards Nankivell just as he lowers his body for the clear out. Cian had to reset slightly before attacking the ball and ends up in exactly the wrong place. Otherwise it'd have been a hard but fair contact around the shoulder area.
