Is it possible to connect to Netflix on your television without it being a smart tv?
    If so, how?
    Thanks.

As long as you have Wi-Fi at home, get a google Chromecast - problem solved!

Install the app on your phone and cast through that.

Yep. That's how I'm running it. You will need a hdmi connection on your TV of course.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

My phone is nearly as old as my tv.
I'm not sure if they'd suit each other!

What's the cheapest way to get connected then?
    Through a games console?

buy a Firestick. Chromecast are handy but a fire stick for not much extra money is worth it,lot more use out of it.

If the TV doesn't have a HDMI port you would be better off ditching it for one that does.

    I'll have to make enquiries.
My tv is in good nick and perfect size that you can't really get any more so I'd prefer not to have to replace it. I can't really afford to anyways.

    Thanks for the great response.

If the TV has a VGA input you can get HDMI to VGA adaptors for half nothing on the interweb.

AFAIK a lot of those adaptors don't work?

As long as it has HDMI just get an Android Box (around 30 for a half decent one) or NowTV stick/box (were €25 recently in Tesco).

If it doesn't have HDMI, I would say it's reasonably time for a new TV - even a 2nd hand one. I bought a TV in 2006 that had HDMI!

I'd say it is hdmi compatible.
I might try the now tv thing.
    Have to sort wifi first!

Roku 3, Apple TV, Amazon fire TV.

I recently bought an Android box and the pre-installed Netflix app (v4.16.4) allowed me to sign in to Netflix and everything worked fine but there doesn't seem to be a way to sign out.

I found some advice on the Web that said there should be a sign-out button under the menu button on the top left of the screen but there isn't. Anyone else had difficulty signing out? How did you resolve it?

It's a shared device, so I need to sign out.

Edit: Problem solved; just had to update to the latest app from Netflix's website and it has a sign out button.

Is my tv up to scratch?
I've signed up for broadband but haven't been connected yet.

Yes hdmi is there (one in back, one at the side :) ), now tv stick/ amazon fire stick/ chromecast will go there, all need WiFi to connect to internet.

Great. Have had the tv for 12 years.
    It's still going strong!

you have an HDMI port and a USB port on the side so you could just power the Chromecast or Firestick from the USB if you don't have a spare power socket

Chromecast, a console (except switch), HDMI to a laptop, connect a desktop, there is a ton of ways

it'd probably be cheaper and easier to get a 2nd hand ps3 and use that ( as it has a scart compatible cable as well as hdmi out)

    Thanks for all the replies.
I am very ignorant of these matters.

So I got a chromecast and thought I was getting places just using WiFi from my phone.
But it only lets me get so far as chromecast disables the hotspot.
The google home link has to be via app so I don’t seem to be able connect via my laptop.
I don’t see myself using it much so I’d rather not sign up to a 12-18 month contract with a broadband provider.
I have limitless internet via my phone.
Does anyone know if there’s any way around this?
Or do I just have to stop being cheap?

How much are you paying for your mobile phone per month? What speed are you getting on your phone?

If you want to be cheap try to use your phones WiFi for apps like what’s app, get a top up package that you top up when you want.

get a broadband package and make sure to renew every year with a different provider. Shop around, if you can avoid getting home phone then do but it’s often similar pricing.

3’s has a 20 euro top up with unlimited data, free texts to all and free mins to other 3 mobiles. I try to avoid topping up as I use public and work WiFi outside the house.

You’d probably have been better of getting a HDMI convert for your phone and running the apps from the phone, what’s Netflix like on the phone?

Do you have Virgin? Netflix is available on channel 999.

    Thanks again.
3 reception is good and reliable and I use the hotspot to watch stuff on my lap top and it works fine.
I’m on the €20 3 package for phone and it suits me fine.

I can get 3 WiFi for house for €30 a month, but I’d really just be paying for the rare occasion visitors wants to watch something other than a dvd on tv.
And it’s an 18 month contract.

The chromecast hooks up to the hdmi socket in the tv fine.

Yes, I am stuck in the 90s!

If your not using the laptop when watching why not hook it up to the TV with a HDMI cable, no real need for the chromecast

I didn’t realize that it could be that simple.
    Thanks, I’ll do that.
