They need to release a few of the loonies out to gain more publicity.

What a truly disrespectful comment, even if it was said for fun.

Mental health issues could affect any of us, and for many it will. Using a derogatory term only makes it harder for people to get the help they need.

Because the Unions only want money and dont want to actually advocate any change to conditions which would make public services in this country work.

    Money is not the problem.

It is the ingrained culture of sick days, temp staff, short hours, long breaks, and low morale that working in a broken system brings.

I assume you've worked around a wide range of departments/services in order to hold that opinion?

The strike you walked passed was possibly an ambulance crew strike.

500 ambulance crew members are part of a group called National Ambulance Representative Association.

This isn't a union itself but is aligned to/part of the PNA - the strike is because the 500 crew members want the PNA to be recognised as their union.

Thats 500 out of 1800 staff.

Personally I think they are right to insist on being represented by whoever they like but the HSE doesnt agree.

There seems to be some difficulties in the ambulance service. In Cork for example crews coming to the end of a 12 hour shift are being asked to do a round trip to Dublin on Patient transfers.

This is leading to very long shifts and crews are unhappy with driving and working while tired issues.

    Are you for real?

Do you not live in Ireland?

Have you ever tried to get a passport, an ambulance, access a hospital, access any government detartment, worked in or around the courts, spoken to teachers,

Unless you work for a FG PR company or your living abroad this is one of the strangest things I have ever read. EVERY single person living in Ireland has first hand experience of incompetence in EVERY single Government Department they have ever dealt with.

Exaggerate much? It seems you've brought your agenda against the public service into the thread.

Crews see doing a very very long day as creating a safety risk.

To themselves, their patient, the doctor/nurse traveling with the patient and any family member traveling with the patient.

    And other road users.

Yesterday a crew doing their 12 hour shift were asked to do a transfer with 30 minutes to go in the shift.

The problem is that a round trip to Dublin at end of shift makes an extremely long day.

So you start at 8 am in the morning - if you add 4 hours to the 12 hour shift - you are looking at a 16 hour day and finishing at midnight.

This is a problem if you are back on duty again at 8 am AND if you are already out of bed 2/3 hours before shift.

Getting up at 6 am and not going to bed until 1 am (ie after finishing at midnight you have to drive home) is a problem

Sorry. You are right. They are all well paid very productive fantastic people.

    Except for the strikes.

    And the shut downs.

    And the hospital trolleys.

    Those are all agendas.

Mental Health has increasingly turned into an excuse for peoples actions these days.

    An excuse or a reason?

Nope, just don't feel the exaggeration is warranted. Plenty of good people doing good jobs in the public sector.

Yes, but rarely violent mental health issues.
That remark was targeted more at the very troublesome patients in the likes of the central medical hospital (think there's only one in Dundrum with VERY high walls)

Believe it or not, it was a supporting comment about the troubles psychiatric nurses likely have with criminal or psychotic patients. Showing the public what they go through might strengthen their case.
