Superscript numbers - a way to make them sequential?

I am writing an essay with notes.


The notes (which appear at the end of the text) are indicated throughout the text by superscript numbers.


If I want to reference a new note in the middle of the text, do I have to edit all subsequent superscript numbers separately, or is there a way of making those subsequent numbers automatically increase by one?

Presumably you're using Word? There's a function called "Insert Footnote", which will automatically create a superscript, and an item in the footer. If you insert a new footnote before existing footnotes, it will push up the numbers the way you want.

If you've done it manually, by just changing the font to superscript, then the only way is to update them manually

Luckily, I hadn’t too many footnotes to correct. All on auto correct now.

Now that my notes are appearing at the bottom of each page, my word count has increased.

Is there an easy way of subtracting the footnotes word count from the main text word count?
