Cartier?

Just wondering what's people's thoughts on Cartier watches.

Do you see them as a legit watch brand up there with the likes of Rolex and Omega or as an over priced fashion watch.

Have to say I really love the new Santos mid size with the new quick release system for removing the braclet and the new pin system for resizing the bracelet, its really cool.

Also like the story behind the Santos, gives it a bit of history.

Cartier are as legit as any imo

And I love the santos

Resale is an issue especially anything mid sized

I always saw them as a rich persons fashion watch. There is nothing spectacular about the movements they use from a quality perspective but the prices are up there with the 'quality' movement makers. But this is only my impression, have not looked in to it in great detail.
That said, they make some cracking looking watches and I would like a Tank in my collection.

The 35mm wears so well also. What are used versions going? €2500/€3000 I would consider one over a Tudor Black Bay 36mm if they are good value used.

Yip, and you can’t really argue with a lot of their pieces (particularly the Santos) place in watch history. As for being overpriced; the Santos seem like a bargain compared to some of the sellita powered offerings from their sister brand IWC. Still have the fear of Richemont’s after sales care though.

My wife likes them. She pointed out the 18k gold Panthere when browsing on holiday.

Might have to re-mortgage the car is she really wants one

Cartier have a pretty decent amount of watch making heritage. They're not just a luxury brand branching out into it.

I dont like Roman Numerals on any watch, apart from that i like the design. And who doesnt like blue hands!

True, they were up there in the early days. Their image problem among watch nuts is more down to what came later, they became a luxury jewellers with a watch department and the watches often reflected that. Not a lot of horological innovation beyond the first Santos anyway.

That said the Santos and the Tank are icons of watch history and deserve a look IMHO.

I’d buy one, wouldn’t go mid size myself but each to their own. Some family members have them now for many years with no issues.

If I won the Euromillions, the Tank would be one of the ones in my collection. One of the most iconic watches I think.

A brand my wife enjoys - a good mix of watchmaking pedigree plus iconic jewellery design.

Their tank, ballon bleu and dolce vita ladies' lines are all pretty in my wife's eyes.

For me it's about saying - hey we're a high end jewellery company that makes great watches from the aesthetic perspective - so less about mechanical innovation nowadays but their jewellery side is the bread and butter i.e. bracelets, cases etc.

My wife really enjoyed her ballon bleu quartz before it was stolen and I can understand why for some people who see watches more from the jewellery aspect more than the mechanical aspect that they want the convenience of pick up and go of battery movements...

Though - speaking of which - I have a very interesting quartz piece from Omega I'll be making a thread about soon enough - two words - Speedmaster Professional

I've always been a fan of Cartier tbh, some really nice classic designs. You can spot ltheir style a mile away. As always, it's subjective. I wouldn't be a fan of other popular brands, always for stupid little reasons. But hey, that's why watches and choosing one is interesting. If everyone liked the same things what would be the point.

For me it would have to be the Santos Dumont, manual wind and very slim, precious metal only or the Tank Americaine. I bought a Santos 100 XXL once and returned it the following day. I hated it after 2 hours and luckily discovered that it wasn’t functional (mechanism completely out of whack) so they had to take it back.
