    Hey all

I have finally decided to get fit, not muscular just fit and loose weight
I have decided to join a gym for the first time also

Now my question is whats the best way to loose weight without running

I have a lack of tendons and muscles in my right leg and no ankle bone so running may cause me problems

    I was thinking swimming instead

Tidy up your diet and incorporate some movement that you enjoy and will continue to do because you enjoy it for what it is rather than because you want to burn calories.

As mentioned by alf - fat loss begins with diet.

You need to be hitting good distances to expect significant calorie burn, you need to be a good swimmer to hit distance. Don't expect going down the pool and bimbling around for 20 lengths in an hour to take anything off your wasteline. (It's still great exercise)

It can be very hard picking up swimming on your own and bringing it to the required levels.

If you did lessons and are able to swim, but you haven't done any lane swimming before i would advise getting some coaching. You're gonna need to get good technique to hit distance. You could also think about checking out a local club to see if you like it (might be cheaper than paying gym membership and hating it) .

If you did lane swimming before and you're getting back into it you could give something like this a whirl:

^ This. I did lane coaching before and it really took my swimming skills to big levels from nothing. I have let it all go to crap now, but could get back into it, but would prefer the motivation of a coach.

Where are you based ? When I was in galway the lane coaching lessons there were excellent (leisureland).

And yes, you need the technique for it to count.

An alternative way to burn the calories is cycling, but you need distance there too. But its easier to develop the distance skills in cycling than in swimming for it to count towards weightloss.
