Donkeys years ago - it closed in 1963.
I can't imagine there would be much parking there either.

Tommy Tiernan had a joke on the Late Late Show about it once.

A priest had been on talking about contraception and advocating for natural rhythm/withdrawal - describing it as taking the train to Galway but getting off in Oranmore.

Tommy was on several weeks later and said it was clear the priest hadn't been near either a woman or a train in a long time - there was no station in Oranmore so withdrawal was exactly like throwing yourself from a train going at 60 miles per hour.

People are leaving Athenry to go to Oranmore to avail of the free parking at the station

A Council official stated GalwayCoCo paid for the carpark in Oranmore and a huge revenue stream would have to be replaced if paid parking is not introduced there as planned

There's a butt load of free parking near the Athenry Station too, with the station car park only 1/2 full the last time I looked

Wonder when they plan to bring it in?

That across the road from the station at the entrance to the main car park? If so that’s always full after the 6:50 train leaves.

so the issue really is number parking in Athenry not whether or not they charge people in Oranmore

Looking to use the station on Saturday.

    Two questions:
    Is it still free parking?
How busy will the car park be on a Saturday? I'll be getting a train at 11.15am.

You'll have no bother getting a space. Tuesdays 8-8:30 are nuts and in the evening it's like a crazy scene with everyone legging it down the steps to get to their cars and get out first...like something from zombieland 🙈

Why is it that difficult to exit the car park?

Its only during the week-(not the weekend) after the 17.20 train has dropped off the commuter crowd. It can take some time to exit due to the surge of people using that train at that time...Any other time during the week and during the weekend its fine

How long do you reckon an average would it take to exit the train station at this peak period?

typically there is minimal traffic on the coast road so 5/10 mins(assuming your turning left towards oranmore)...if your turning right then you can skip on

If there is works on the road or traffic is backed up it can take longer

You can also plan ahead and park strategic
