Is having a Casino in your town similar to a brothel?

    I personally think the slot machines should be banned. There was talk of banning FOBT in the UK. Some documentaries on them on TV made it look pretty awful. Poker is a skill game, used to play myself in tournaments. See no issue with poker or card games etc.

    Someone should clarify with them that it's a slot machine, not a slut machine. That might clear it up.

    There is a lot of talk about Fixed Odds Betting Terminals and slot machines in the UK, and regulation of them. They do seem to feed addiction. I would see the card games in a different light, more of a skill game. Biggest problem now is online gambling. There is a lot of different aspects to the gambling industry, will be interesting to see what further regulation will come down the line. I see a bit of a shift with people more anti gambling the past few years.

    I see a shift in people being against any forum of gambling, drinking, sexual stuff, drug use in the last few years.

    The gaming industry in Australia, which is huge, derives more than 50=% of its revenues from problem gamblers. They notion that they don't set out to foster addiction is hopelessely naive. Of course they do; as you point out they exist to make a profit, and compulsive gambling is hugely profitable for them. They have a strong incentive to foster it; why would you expect them not to respond to that incentive?

    I think it has a lot to do with the way gambling has expanded so much in the past few years and how many people, especially young males, have developed problems and the way gambling advertising has evolved.

    Not that long ago sports gambling did not go beyond smokey bookie shops that only gave odds on horse and dog racing.

    No you can bet on anything in any sport anywhere.

    And the advertising is everywhere, and its message is that being someone that bets is all part of enjoying life, like going out for a meal, having fun etc.

    No wonder there's a backlash.

    Thats the second "statistic" you've quoted yet you have not posted any link to any supporting study ?

    Of course. But no one on this thread has claimed that .

    Those studies acknowledge that their estimates are just that and its nigh on impossible to give an accurate estimate. I'd be splitting hairs to say its actually closer to 40% .

    You haven't shown a link to the more relevant studies of how a casino is more destructive than a brothel.


    For the record I don't think it is. Problem gamblers will gamble whether there is a casino there or not. Now I would not be a fan of this type of a casino (which is essentially a gaming arcade ) as opposed to raditional casino which hosts poker and which has a more social element to it.
