    Awful news

Jesus, wonder what happened, he must have been young enough. He played good tracks when he filled in on the electric disco, RIP.

Been on 2FM for the past 18 years

Nothing on any Google search suggests that Alan McQuillan is dead.

So as such, wouldn’t you imagine the wishes of the family and privacy ought to be respected!!

Generally people tend to be respectful on social or otherwise until you see anything on RIP.ie

It's true unfortunately, a friend who was on 2FM posted it on FB yesterday....

But if 2fm or their staff are putting Facebook posts out about it then it's hardly respecting the wishes of the family and one would also expect something official from 2FM also.

Quite distasteful for "Nikki Hayes" (or whatever her real name is) to be posting about it on social media... very self-serving attention seeking imo.

Baz, Lucy and a host of other 2fm alumni posting it on their social media too.

I thought it was odd that 2FM had no mention of same on their FB as recently as today. If the family wanted it left off same then that is fair enough and obviously it should be respected at this time.

It's being reported on rte.ie - on phone can't post links.

RIP - no age at all

Am I missing something here? Why are 2fm acting like normal? A long serving colleague has passed on, he was on air on on Stevens morning.. contrast that with red FM who did lots of on air tributes for Henry condon, even tho he was completely unknown to the average red FM listener

Weird the rte.ie news item has been removed.
    But it's here https://www.her.ie/news/tributes-paid-2fm-dj-alan-mcquillan-dies-suddenly-445736
and on some other online entertainment pages - I would be delighted if it was wrong

    What shows was he on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 113 ✭✭Prince William

Alan McQuillans first show on 2fm was filing in for Adian Leonard on Sunday evening in summer 2002. On two occasions, for a short time, he had his own slots, Saturday night 9/Midnight for about 6 months in 2005 & The 6/7am early show for 6 months in 2014. His main job was always behind the scenes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Alan also worked in broadcast services in RTE Radio, who do the continuity on Radio and "back at base" for outside broadcasts.

I remember him the night Pope John Paul II died on a Saturday night 2FM in 2005, he was playing dance music and next he had to cut it to announce the death of JP II and then play back to back easy listening songs for a few hours.
    I have it on tape.

Doubt that would happen now in RTE!!

He was the stand in for Blnaid Treacy on the chart show, most recently on 28th December.

Yes, so it's very unusual that 2fm haven't mentioned his passing.

Who knows, maybe there are family members abroad. Its up to his family if they want to keep it private. I'm sure 2fm will mention it officially in due course.

Are we to make assumptions about how he died from the obvious absence of discussion on how he died. 2FM not reporting it still very strange.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

I know who he is and heard on the radio over the years but because neither 2fm or RTE have said anything, I happened to see a brief tweet from Rebecca Horan from earlier today this evening and if I hadn't I'd have been none to wiser that anything was a miss.

We ? You can but I'm sure a mod won't be that happy. I personally will wait until there is an official statement.

I think 'tragic' and 'sudden' usually infer something....

    RIP :(

They may but RTE or 2Fm have said nothing and inferring things or assuming stuff doesn't help anyone.

Mod: Alan's family/colleagues may be reading this, so show a bit of decorum and don't speculate as to what happened.

For those who may be speculating, Alan died of a sudden medical emergency and was completely out of the blue. Just a tragic and untimely death.

Fellow 2FM presenters have not mentioned his passing, neither have 2FM as a station.

I didn't hear them live but I heard Jenny greene's tribute to Alan McQuillan today on 2fm and it was a really lovely tribute. I've also heard Amanda fennelly at the end of her show on RTÉ gold.

Eoghan McDermott struggled to keep it together when talking about him today, can't imagine how difficult it is to comprehend something like that.

I heard that yesterday, just before he dedicated "The Sunscreen Song" to Alan. He was very emotional, but kept professional even though it was obvious he was devastated. It reminded me of hearing Tony Fenton on Today FM on the day Gerry Ryan died. (RIP to them both!) He sounded like he was only just about keeping it together at times.

Condolences to all in RTE who have lost their friend.

Maybe RTE were asked by family not to mention it for a while.

Declan Pierce was just talking about him a few moments ago - extremely moving stuff, they began dj-ing together.

It’s so nice to see everyone has nothing but nice things to say about him, but it’s even nicer to know it’s a true reflection of who he was

Yeah he always seemed like an old school nice man on the radio, he wasn't brash nor cheesy, nothing to possibly dislike about him.

An absolute gent. Horrible and tragic. Makes you think. Be good to one another, you don't know when or what your last words will be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

I have to say since 2fm acknowledged his death on Friday they as a station have been a credit to themselves and to their friend who has died. It's clear it's hit them very hard and they've been genuine in their remembrance of Alan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

I will pass on his condolences to his family & to his colleagues at RTÉ 2FM. I only got his news about his passing on the RTÉ website on Friday night. The tribute done by Jenny Greene & one of her male colleagues was very heartfelt. R.I.P. Alan. :(

The RDS radio text contains a little tribute to him at the moment. I don’t have the exact wording now but something like “Alan... without you we are truly off air”.

Loving all the Pulse FM tunes on 107.1 to remember Alan!

The last time Alan's voice was heard on the radio was doing continuity for church services on Lw 252, you can listen below https://www.rte.ie/radio1/sunday-worship/programmes/2019/0106/1020606-sunday-worship-sunday-6-january-2019/?clipid=103012017#103012017
