Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Wolf

The Dark Lord Sauron has returned to Middle-Earth, hell-bent on wreaking destruction and havoc before conquering all before him.

At the same time, the evil wizard Saruman has assembled his formidable Uruk-Hai force, believing his power has surpassed even the Dark Lord’s.

The Ring Bearer has arrived at Rivendell, and Lord Elrond has commissioned a Fellowship to escort the Ring Bearer to Mount Doom, to cast the One Ring within and end the threat of Sauron forever.

The future of Middle-Earth rests on the shoulders of the 9, but also on the citizens, who will attempt to assist them in this great hour of need.

Allow your humble narrators to introduce you to the major movers and shakers of this impending battle:

    Three evil teams:

    mpttt01_01.jpg

    270px-Balrog500ppx.png

Sauron and The Witch King – evil Cult who convert each night. If at any time in the game all alive players are recruited into the cult team Sauron will win. Through the Witch King - the leader of the Nazgul -  and his deadly Morgul-Blade, they also have access to the poison ability, which allows them to poison and fake poison two players each night. If the poisoned player is not healed by lynch time, they will die. The Witch-King cannot be killed by Saruman or the Uruk-Hai. For further information on conversions, please see Rule 9.

Should Sauron and the Witch-King ever gain possession of the One Ring, they will gain a kill each night.

Saruman and the Uruk-Hai – Saruman, with the aid of his Uruk-Hai will stop at nothing to destroy all who would oppose him. Saruman and his minions have a kill each night. Saruman is a powerful wizard, and has cloaked himself against the power of Gandalf's peeks. On the first attempt, he will show as NRV. On the second attempt however.... Gandalf will be able to see his true intentions.

The Balrog: Brutal and psychotic - the Balrog knows nothing but chaos and destruction. Kills once per cycle - at any time. Nothing can protect from a Balrog attack, so be afraid when you hear those drums in the deep....

However, the Balrog will meet his match in Gandalf should he target him.
    The Fellowship (Village Roles):

    fellowship-of-the-ring.jpg?w=419&h=314

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTbKs1rfmOIWh6bXErp-PiaQEXXjzl2hT9Soa85IVCKa10mh8t2

Frodo – the Ring Bearer. Has a number of abilities he can access at any time by using the ring. However, as those who remember tales of the One Ring are aware - it is always trying to return to it’s master Sauron….

In the event of Frodo’s death, the ring will pass to Samwise and the same rules will apply to him – UNLESS Frodo has become a Nazgul.

Samwise – Loyal companion of Frodo. Samwise always knows where Frodo is.

Gandalf the Grey – Powerful wizard and member of the Fellowship. Seer with the power to peek one player each night and learn their role. However Saruman is tricksy to find and it will take two attempts.

Aragorn/Stryder – The Ranger. Can follow a player each night and learn if they visited anyone.

Gimli –  Can protect a player each night. Cannot protect the same target consecutively.

Legolas – Has a shot each night to take out the evil surrounding the Fellowship.

Boromir – The Cursed. Should Boromir be targeted for a kill by Team Saruman or a conversion by Sauron, he will either become a wolf or a Nazgul.

Merry and Pippin – two mischievous hobbits who share a backroom. They have a number of tricks up their sleeve to aid the village. Unfortunately should one be killed, the other will fall into a deep depression and lose access to these abilities.

Arwen - Elven Healer. Each day from munch to lynch can select a player and heal them from the poison of the Morgul-Blade. If successful they will not die at lynch time.

The humble narrators would also like to warn players not to disturb the water... not to look into the lights.... and beware of the spider's web..

    Game Rules:

    1. Respect the mods: The decisions of the mods are final. Mods will not enter into discussion or arguments on thread about mechanics of the game. There will be a time for review and discussion after the game is complete. The mods have some secrets, but all players have been provided with the information they need to play the game. If you have any questions, please PM Necro, Barney or Murray and we will respond as soon as possible.

    2. Don't cheat: This is a game that relies heavily on the players having integrity. No PMing other players in the game, and no chat about the game outside of this game thread and designated back forum threads. No posting of any PMs from the game mod or referring to the content of them. No screen-shots, quoting from backroom threads or naming of rooms anyone may or may not have are permitted.

    3. Game schedule and voting rules: The game begins as soon as the mods say go, with lynch form opened immediately. There will be a lynch on Monday evening at 9pm and each subsequent night. Wolf kills, Cult conversion attempts and poisoning are in the morning at 10am. Balrog kills can happen at any time, once per cycle. Both players targeted for poisoning will be announced on thread at 10am. The lynch form will be opened following the Wolf Kill and players can vote until 08:59:59PM. You can change your vote as many times as you like, but only your last vote will count. Do not share your vote form password with anyone else. All votes for the lynch have to be made by yourself.

Please note that from day 2 onwards majority voting will be in place.

    4. Lynch rules:The votes will be published as soon as possible following the lynch in the order they were cast, with the player's role revealed upon death. There will always be the option of voting for No Lynch.

In the event of a tie: All tied players will be up for lynch with a new vote immediately following and to close at 10pm. This vote will be in public on thread in the format VOTE XXXX.
The tied players will lose the right to vote at this juncture. In the event of a second tie whoever was voted for first in the tiebreaker round will be lynched.
Please Note: All votes in the tied vote scenario are final - no redaction or withdrawal of votes will be allowed.

    5. Are you dead? People are free to post in the thread until the lynch and mafia kills are announced. You are not dead until a post in the game thread announces it. Once you are dead, please don't post in the game thread again. Dead players are also asked to NOT THANK POSTS IN THE GAME THREAD AFTER DEATH. You will be granted access to the deadroom where you can discuss the game.

    6. Policy on Abuse: Boards has a no-abuse rule in place that is in effect in this forum as well. By all means, call people on dodgy behaviour, point out if they are being silly or behaving strangely, be aggressive in your approach; but DO NOT abuse another player. If you feel another player has stepped over a line, the first step is to ask them to stop; if they do not, please PM a forum mod (Sullivlo/Pter) or use the report button on the post in question. Forum mods will investigate and action any issues at an appropriate time, keeping the game mods informed of any actions as needed.

    7. Stay in the game world: This game takes place in Middle Earth and players are encouraged to get on board with the theme. You don't need to reveal your character, but refrain from talking about real life or the world outside the Lord of The Rings Universe during the game. Have fun, make meme’s, take the piss and try to enjoy the game. THERE ARE NO TASKS IN THIS GAME.

    8. Sub Rules: In the event a player cannot continue for any reason, or at mod discretion due to lack of activity, players may be subbed where possible. There is to be no discussion on thread about substitutions in any fashion. Players requesting to be subbed out must PM the mods. Players are asked at a minimum to contribute 5 posts per cycle.

    9. Cult Rules: Sauron’s convert at night does not change any powers a player may or may not have, they will continue as the same alignment and will not be informed of the conversion, unless they become a Nazgul. Night time conversions will not be announced on thread.

    Win Conditions:

Sauron/Cult: Wins when all living players are converted to the cult of Sauron, or by killing off the wolf team and the Balrog and gaining parity with the village.

Wolf Win: Must kill team Sauron, any Nazgul created and the Balrog - and gain parity with the village.

Balrog/SK Win: Gain parity with all other teams.

Village Win: Eliminate all evil teams, including any Nazgul created.

    Mod Clarification on Majority Voting:

If a majority is reached prior to or at 4pm, those with night actions will have 2 hrs to enter them. A lynch will then take place again at 9pm and the schedule will return to it's normal form.

If majority is reached after 4pm, the day ends early and the schedule does not change ie, 10am will be the next announcement.

This will be in effect from Day 2 onwards. Day 1 phase will play out irrespective of whether a majority is reached at any stage.

Any further questions, players can PM the mods.

    Further Mod Note:

In case the OP wasn't clear - this game begins on a lynch, this is day 1. Lynch tomorrow at 9pm.

Then we have an accord ....

    So baddies are:

Sauraman and witchking - X 2 but they recruit to their cult. Their cult don’t actually join them (alignment mentioned) but will add up at end if cult out numbers other teams. They also poison two people a die, fake and real poison but arowan can heal. Does poisoned person come out on thread or is it just arawan chooses one and its 50/50?

Sauraun and urikai - we don’t know how many urakai they have but they get a kill? Sauron appears good on first peak, bad on second

Balrog is sk but Gandalf will become Gandalf the grey if he tries to kill him?! That would be cool

Goodies are fairly self explanatory with Frodo teasing evedybody with his ring for about 12 hours of extended , 16 ending marathon movies. :D

    So this conversion mechanic.

Each evening a player is marked as a cult member, but they don't know it and it only becomes apparent when cult members outnumber other teams? Have I got that right? How is such a mechanic combated?

  • Forum Games Player Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭Eva WW

Boromir – The Cursed. Should Boromir be targeted for a kill by Team Saruman or a conversion by Sauron, he will either become a wolf or a Nazgul.

If Team Sauron try to convert Boromir to their cult, he will be fully converted instead

If Team Saruman try to kill him, he will be converted to their team instead

Rule 9 states that conversions will not be announced on-thread, but that seems to apply specifically to the Cult, right? So we might be notified if he's converted to Team Saruman

(Why oh why did JRR have to give the two main baddies such similar names?)

Try reading the Silmarillion and dealing with: Finwe, Feanor, Findis, Fingolfin, Finarfin, Finrod, and Finduilas. That was fun.

The cult win if all players are converted or if the wolf team and sk are dead and the cult conversions gain party with the village

The only way to combat is is to kill the recruiters it looks like

  • Forum Games Player Posts: 3,295 ✭✭✭Gabriel WW

Can anyone on Sauron's team convert, or just Sauron himself? ie, if we kill him do we stop more conversions? What happens if Sauron, the WK and Nazgul are dead, do anyone who was converted return to their old team for parity purposes?

I'm not sure it can be, really? At least, not purposefully.

The counter mechanic is likely the fact said cult members can still be killed off (via munch and lynch and whatever else is thrown at us), plus it's only 1 a night. So presuming no one who is "converted" is killed, it's still going to take a while for the number balance to switch, right?

    10 Rolled Goodies

    Sauron and the Witch King

    Saruman

    The Balrog

That leaves us with 11 unknowns, spread out between Uruk-Hai and unnamed villagers

So there are two different types of converts and at a guess only the Nazgul will know they were converted and hopefully without a cult leader to follow those that don't know should revert back to being villagers.

As he isn't in the OP I am totally expecting Gollum to show up and start asking riddles at some stage.

    No, they don't

    9. Cult Rules: Sauron’s convert at night does not change any powers a player may or may not have, they will continue as the same alignment and will not be informed of the conversion, unless they become a Nazgul. Night time conversions will not be announced on thread.

My reading is that Nazgul's are full converts to Team Sauron, the wolf mentioned in relation to Boromir would be a full conversion to Team Saruman, and all other conversions are cult ones to Team Sauron

If Sauron finds Frodo - the only other character where Nazgul get a mention, I think.

Yeah, I missed that Frodo could become a Nazgul as well. So Frodo and Boromir would become full conversions, while all others would be cult conversions, unaware of their status

Middle Earth is nice time of year, been looking forward to this for a while.

So there's Nazguls which are full converts who are presumably aware of their status and then converts who are in effect sleepers who don't know they are converts?

The levels of paranoia should be interesting with that in place especially with no announcements of conversions :(
