Torn rotator cuff so using machines at gym. Done horizontal leg press twice and ankles are pretty sore. Any tips for positioning of feet to put less strain on them? Also should I use the lying hamstring curls machine to try work hamstrings and balance leg workout -read they cause shortening of hamstrings?

Depends on what exactly you mean by ankles are sore. In general the lower your feet the more dorsiflexion, so in that position, you could stretch your calf and Achilles tendon, which could cause some soreness, if you are not used to it.

The lower your feet the more dorsiflexion and knee flexion and more quad involvement, the higher your feet the less dorsiflexion and knee flexion, but more hip flexion and more glute and hamstring involvement.

Leg curl would be fine, given you probably can't do weighted hip hinge movements at the moment.

By the way was this leg press in Fitnessworx in Cork? If so, I'm the one who showed you the handle to adjust the seat.
