    What if Superman was evil.

Injustice is Superman gone bad I am assuming it's where Justice League will head in the future. This looks good though

Another trailer popped up; very much a more plot focused one, and TBH it's so heavily cribbing the Superman story (but with evil child), I'm almost wondering if somewhere in DC Legal, lawyers are checking copyright law :D

If done right (unlikely based on past experience) that could turn out to be an excellent storyline!

It's a good premise. Would have worked well for an actual Superman film focused on Martha and Jonathan Kent's struggles to raise Clark, who is tempted by evil rather than being innately good. This looks like it's just going the opposite direction by making him innately evil, though maybe not.

    Warning: Gore

This continues to creep me out:

Man, this really looks like 2 hours of inverted Superman nods; the trailers do seem to spoil any ambiguity here about the child's intentions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,273 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

Doesn't DC Comics have an inverted Superman, Ultraman? He's a member of the alternative universe version of the Justice League.

I really like what they are doing with this. While the parallels to superman are incredibly obvious, I dont want to see this be an actual DC or general superhero property. I would love to see where this goes, if anywhere with the sequels.

While I loved Akira, I felt Chronicle was sorely lacking in just about every department.

If we get our own dark/alt comic book esque movies, like this, I'll be happy.

Cool, I'll be Grumpy. We just need five more dwarves and a Snow White.

Boards.IE Dark Universe, coming 2030. I mean, it will be better than the Universal Dark Universe, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

I eh... kinda don't want a scary Superman film anymore...

    :(

So assuming the kid doesn't just win and kill everyone, I guess there'll either be a convenient shard of ... I dunno, Creptonite that can kill him, or else will be defeated by local genius scientist, Rex Ruthor :D

Nathan Fillion will appear and save the day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,378 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

That looks good, i'm just worried they'll make a typical happy ending to it. Like, there should be nothing that could take this kid down in a world where Superheroes don't appear to exist. Like, invincible, flight, laser eyes, super strength... Unless Batkid is about! June 16th release over here.

Saw this in Canada. Pretty decent. Not gonna change the world but a bit of fun.

The characters were not too annoying. The kid was good. Quite chilling at times.

Worth a watch but dial back expectations a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,362 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

The trailers are on a pretty much constant loop on Channel4 online. So much so that they're actually putting me *off* a movie I was initially interested in!

Saw it tonight and thought it was pretty decent.

Saw it last night and thought it was a mixed bag :/ worth noting I had thought it was written rather than just produced by James Gunn. One thing I thought was sorely missed was Gunn's humour.

For a film that has a good number of genuinely creepy scenes it feels constantly obligated to throw in stupid jumpscare moments, which undermines the tension somewhat. And the pacing felt off to me - like
the kid goes evil not far after halfway through, and from there it's just him being Evil Child Superman
. Oddly, where I normally feel films take too long to tell their stories, Brightburn feels like a film that's had too much cut away from its middle act.

The kid was good, but none of the characters were really fleshed out enough and as a result most of the adults in the film except the mum come off as complete arseholes -
most jump from "oh, here is a child I know who might need help or support" to "AAAAAH DEVIL CHILD!" with little prodding, because the film acts as though these characters know what the audience knows.

    The
mid credits scene with Michael Rooker as a crazed YouTube conspiracy theorist
    was great, though.

Just watched it there. Massive superman fan so delighted with how it ended. Not normal auld bull**** ending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

Not a bad film was expecting a bit more humour in it.

    Good ending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 872 ✭✭✭Captain Red Beard

It was decent, the small town setting, the characters etc were pretty much what I was expecting. Should've been better though, the ending could've been ramped up to nation or world under siege level, military and whatnot dumbfounded as to how to deal with a threat that couldn't be planned for.
As it stands the ending just suggests a sequel.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Pretty decent, though as someone said above I did feel like it was missing something from the middle act, the escalation could definitely have been handled a little better and more convincingly.

Solid film though overall, they did a lot with a small budget and played very much to their strengths. The kid was great too.

So I seen this today. I thought it was slow to start off but then got good and there was plenty of suspense in it too but nothing that scared or surprised me.

It was kind of like a horror sci-fi film.

I have to say I laughed at a few parts but overall I would say that child would be your worst nightmare.

Would give 5.5 out of 10.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,703 ✭✭✭✭Skerries

as said it needed to expand to a more global setting for the ending
if there is a sequel are we going to see the rise of a hero to combat him or just good old human ingenuity?

After most reviews, I was expecting a sh!tshow, but I thought was pretty entertaining. A solid 3 out 5 stars.

Only 90 minute running time - any film coming in at that duration gets extra brownie points in my book.

I enjoyed it. Agree with the above - solid 3 out of 5.

I the credits scene with Michael Rooker was interesting.
He talks of sinister versions of Aquaman (attacking a ship) and Wonder Woman - a witch who is able to make people tell the truth.

Good performances from Elizabeth Banks and David Denman.

I have to say I enjoyed it a lot.

It was what I was expecting it to be.

I'd happily watch a few more if they make them.

I thought it was not very good at all, felt like a made for TV movie. I think I expected it to be better.

It was a low-budget film to be fair. I think it did very well with what it had to play with, though I think the middle part could've been fleshed out more/better.

Like when you consider a typical Marvel/DC movie would have $150m budget, this had something like $8m.

I enjoyed it, it was entertaining, some of the deaths were extreme and unsettling especially when you see a young child doing it.

I think it latched onto the whole Marvel DC genre, and even if you liked it or hated it the film was gong to do well, and it did for a modest budget also.

Really liked the ending with Michael Rooker, hopefully a part 2 in the works.

I think it's partly the reason The Boys is doing so well....feeds into the general comic universe, but is completely anti-everything the cinematic universe has thrown at us.

Made me think what if Superman's alter ego was Damien Thorn.
So the aunt survived? Expected the bully to get hurt in some way.
The fact Michael Rooker mentioned "Aquaman", "Wonder Woman", "Flash" and "Martian Manhunter" made me think there wouldn't be a sequel. But just looking at Wikipedia now it looks like there might be and they've already done a "Split" on it and tied it into an existing movie by having Crimson Bolt from Super being that "Flash" picture.

Random comment, but I remember Erica from her time on Joan of Arcadia

Watched this last week and thought it was pretty solid.

Fairly low budget, a nice 90 min length. Interesting concept well executed. :)

Watched it last night, perfectly serviceable. Like most posters in this thread it seems, I wasn't blown away by it. Fine for the budget it had, and also it clocks in at a decent 90 minute mark. You dont get allot of movies doing that these days.

I was more interested in a shared universe they might setup. the Crimson Bolt (Rain Wilson) is already a dark Batman analogue, just need to do a MerMan and\or Witch movie then tie them in for a crossover movie.

    Low-budget supervillain-origin horror.

It's got plenty of legs as a niche horror genre, as the $6 million dollar investment has got an overall return of $31 million so far.

I thought it was quite entertaining in relation to the concept and its execution, if a bit slow in the first half- 6/10.
