watching recordings from old HD box

Hi I have just upgraded to Sky Q and during the install the engineer said it was possible to watch recordings on the old HD box once I still have the viewing card. Is this correct? I tried connecting it today and just get a blank screen

You can't watch recordings on the box once subscription has been cancelled, viewing card or no viewing card.

If you pair the viewing card with the old box you should be able to watch the recording.Maybe I am wrong with this.A phone call to sky will sort your query.
