Don't know if this in the correct place but if not mod feel free to move.

At the start of the new year 2018 i said to myself that i was going to do something for someone else this year. So I started putting 1 euro into a tin every day without fail I now have almost e365 but at a loss as to who to donate it too . I am thinking an organation who help the homeless that sleep rough on the streets any ideas

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Simon Community, Alone - somewhere you think will use the money well.

I can't see how giving it out on the street is a wise way to use it.

    Not your ornery onager

Whatever good cause you give it to fair play for doing it . If everybody that could afford to do what your doing did it a lot of peoples lives would be much better

    You're very good.
Charities who run helplines might be a good choice too, Christmas can be a terrible time for people's mental health, or for vulnerable children. It could literally be a life saving call for someone.

Yes, it will help. It's a very nice thing to do.

I suggest getting it bagged up and exchanged or lodged, then give it to whatever charity you choose.

They ^^ are always extremely grateful for any contribution, big or small.

    Well done, OP.

This might not be a popular opinion, but €124 million of tax payers money spent on homelessness in 2017 and likely more in 2018. Id suggest giving it to something that isn't so well funded. Look at some of the sick Irish children on GoFundMe that have families struggling because of their unfortunate situation. That money would make a much bigger impact on them.

I'll be honest, I'd be inclined to agree with this and if it were up to me I would suggest ALONE. Christmas is especially hard on elderly people who live alone and they tend to get forgotten in the bigger scheme of things.

Or a small animal charity like Dogs in Distress or A Dog's Life. That money would make a huge difference to them.

It will make the biggest impact in a small charity mostly run by volunteers I would say the Capuchin day centre too they make a huge impact to homeless and don't have big overheads for admin and CEO's etc.
I've been working with the homeless in various charities for the past 12 years and they are probably my favourite organisation

I personally only support animal charities because they get so little funding I know my donations make a difference...

That said, who you donate to is very personal. Maybe think about something that affected you during the year or something that had an impact on you...

Well done also btw, very selfless and lovely that you are following through

Whatever you decide to do, dont just drop it in a tin.
Charities can reclaim tax on donations over 250eu so your 365 will be worth more than 500eu if you fill out a form for them when making the donation.

Also, tell them its a one time thing and you dont want to be added to their donor list. Unless you want to be called every year asking for money

I disagree. People come before animals. Donating to animal charities in preference to helping people is morally wrong.

Alone would also be my recommendation. The homeless charity industry is crowded, ineffectual and inefficient.
I am very dubious about most charities.

I wouldn't recommend any of the bigger charities TBH. They seem to spend a lot of the money on executive salaries, company cars and things that apparently have nothing to do with the people they are supposed to help.

But that's just my tuppence worth...

Give it to something smaller and more personal to you.

id suggest an animal charity but thats my personal preference. homeless charities are given a serious amount of money each year by the govt. what its actually achieving is open to interpretation imo.

i would also secobd Alone. many elderly find this time of year very difficult and this charity helps enormously.
either way, op, youve done a good thing.

That's very much a personal call.

I know lots of the animal rescues often post how their vets bill is €.... and u can help by paying off some of the bill. So at least you would know your money is gone towards something instead of just donating it to the charity not knowing where it will go/be spent.

Not sure how you can argue that morally helping a dog is better than helping a person. It's the persons choice where there money goes alright but morally I would not be able to justify giving money to feed a dog over giving money to feed a child.

That said a lot of the bigger charities waste far too much money so I would donate the money in the form of a useful gift to somewhere, like presents for sick kids, an item a charity needs etc.

What charities have company cars? And why shouldn't executives in charities get executive salaries? Is it only rich people who don't need money that you want to be working in salaries?

Charities usually give milage, not company cars. People should be paid for the work they do but there were a good few large charities in the news a while ago for the amount of donations that actually reach people. Smaller charities tend to have less overheads and more of the money reaches who the donator intends.

    Mod note:

No more back and forth in the thread please.

This thread is to offer the OP suggestions as to how and where to donate the money, not the merits of any particular cause or staffing structures. As has been pointed out, it is a matter of personal preference and not morality.

If you do not have constructive advice, please do not post.

    Thanks

    What a lovely idea.

I would suggest the Kevin Bell Trust. They are a family run charity that repatriate Irish people who have died abroad in sudden or tragic situations

What you are doing is a very thoughtful act.

We launched a Christmas charity initiative at work yesterday where we had speakers from Alone, Dublin Simon Community, Alice Leahy Trust, Sophia Housing & Focus Ireland. All are worthy causes, and there are many more deserving charities too.

Personally, I give to charities that have a personal connection. Hospice because the local hospice in Cork took great care of my gran when she was very ill, Crumlin Hospital because I was a patient there when I was a kid etc.

Find a local family and give to them.....let them get presents or something for kids.....someone that maybe lost their job....something like that......make someone else’s day

Ever wonder why we have so many charities and who is funding them al......how much of your money would filter to the actual needy? Less that 50% I would bet.....better going direct to the needy than using a middleman who is taking their cut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,610 ✭✭✭kerryjack

Lovely gesture and if there was more like yourself this world would be a better place your money could make a big difference for 1 family i would try and identify a nice single parent family in your community thats doing her best and pass it on secretly to them. Well done again and happy Christmas to you.

Great idea. I’m going to donate to Luckys Cat Rescue as they are entirely voluntary and are very helpful. I’m going to get food as I know that they will always need food :) nice idea
