Teenager with hamstring problem

    My 15 year old son pulled his hamstring in July. At the time he was playing a lot of sports. However in the meantime we have restricted him playing/training

    It was not a bad strain (it was the light strain the physio said at the time.)

    Ever since he has been having problems with it. He can play for 2 to 3 weeks with no issues then he tweaks it again.

    In the latest episode he could feel it tweaking in a match about 6 weeks ago, came off straight away, did physio for 2 weeks and then came back and has played for last 4 weeks no problem.

    However today he was training and it tweaked again but he said it wasn't too bad.

    This is going on now for 5 months. I'm of the view that he needs to see someone more than a physio, maybe a specialist to get to the root of the problem, how would I get an appointment with Santry would I need a referral from a GP

    Was it the same physio he went to each time? Secondary opinion may be warranted before going to somewhere like Santry. More than likely will just give him more physio anyway

    on the second physio at this stage, it's not a bad strain, he can walk perfectly this evening, its only when pressure is applied, it gets sore

    I had years of hamstring and groin issues... over the years physios and massueues nearly rubbed it to death....focusing on them muscles

    Went to santry physio....they focused on strengthening glute on side of hamstring issues....it worked.....only thing is if i stop doing my glute strength work for a few weeks the hamstring and groin issues re appear....

    I have a slight leg length discrepancy which means the glute on that side can become weak unless i exercising a lot...

    Thats my 2 cent....your kid is still young....but maybe its core and glute strength.

    Would agree with the above. Your son may have weak core, tight quads hip flexors etc and they can all be sorted but unless look at how glutes and hamstrings are performing its not going to solve anything. We all stretch our hamstrings but sometimes we need to strengthen them. I would go to a different physio and look for a full assessment particularly core strength.. Best of luck

    My young lad had hamstring problems a few years ago playing gaelic.

    He had them because :

    1) He was playing too much.
    2) He was coming back from injury too quickly. The week that you think is ok to come back, add on a few more.
    3) He was going to the wrong physio.

    He started going to a guy in Kildare Town for physio. Now he has had no problems.

    What is really important that whether you have hamstring problems or not is to get a set of hamstring exercises going and stick to the regime. And follow a good physio's instructions to the letter.

    what exercises were suggested by physio - if none then you're going to the wrong person.

    Swiss ball leg curls, x band walks, glute bridges, clam shells, single leg deadlifts etc

    Soft tissue work can be helpful but not that useful if there's zero strengthening work performed

    core work can help but it really should be there as part of an existing program tbh
