Winner of FIFA's first Ballon D'Or for female players gets asked during the ceremony : "Can you twerk?". Appalling behaviour tbh, but soccer so what would you expect from a pig but a grunt...

The question was asked by a DJ. Part and parcel of a dj's life I suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,532 ✭✭✭facehugger99

I believe the host who made the comments was a DJ - don't really see how it reflects on soccer per se.

It was a pretty stupid comment to make but he has apologised and been widely censured on social media.

This world is increasingly turning into a place where people are all too keen to pull out all the stops to try and look for something to be outraged by.

Racism, sexism cards constantly at the ready.
Moments after Hegerberg’s speech in which she praised football’s attempts to grant equality to its female participants and implored “young girls around the world” to “please believe in yourself”, she was asked on-stage by host Solveig — who had earlier danced alongside Kopa award winner Kylian Mbappé — “Est-ce que tu sais twerker? (Do you know how to twerk?)”

I'm outraged by your being outraged by a non event OP

Silly comment alright, it was out of place and she deserved better, but sadly this is also absolute cannon fodder for media outlets like RTE and Newstalk who love to do a nice bit of man hating on a daily basis.

He's apologised and she accepted, let's move on.

She said no. She could have at least tried. All the male winners did it when asked.

I was quite offended by David Attenborough calling climate change man made.

Women drive cars too and fart just as much as men do.

She's no fun. Did Marty ask any of the Ladies footballers to do the twerk?

Shouldn't have happened. But the OP is just lazy, looking for a reaction without even clicking your own link.

    Try harder.

He barely apologised let's be honest now.
I think you could see from the reaction of the other people in the audience it wasn't an appropriate thing to say, but it would be a shame if it overshadowed her win.

I explained to @AdaStolsmo the buzz and she told me she understood it was a joke. Nevertheless my apologies to anyone who may have been offended. Most importantly congratulations to Ada https://t.co/DATdg0TfQk

    Embarrassing.
As are some of the hilaaarious comments here.
His "apology" was not an apology

That poster has a right to their own opinion in fairness. I actually agree with them. If its potentially sexist towards women it's seen as the devil's tongue. However, if there is a potential for negativity towards women (in this case "man-made" it's never allowed to be discussed.

Don't get me wrong, I 100% agree that Solvieg should never has asked this but is it true he asked EVERYONE? Reading different reports on it.

DJs are up there with rappers as the lowest form of life in the music industry. Well known that the best way to get lots of sex as a man is to be a DJ so hardly surprising they are sexist. Then add in the fact he's French, who in general are one of the most sexist nations on the planet then you have the perfect storm.

Who thought it a good idea to have a DJ, especially a French one, present this show. That's the real question.

Do you not see how your comment is just as discriminatory against a group of people as the twerk comment you are complaining about?

It was a ridiculous question to ask, what was he thinking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,217 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

I hate people jumping on the *ism bandwagon. People have gotten so thin-skinned and any comment is open to be accused of some ism. Racism, sexism, ageism.... uh..... sexual identity-ism.... etc.

However, in all fairness, this was pretty sexist and more than a bit sleazy. As I'm sure has been said before, he wouldn't have asked Messi or Ronaldo or any other male player the same thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,666 ✭✭✭tritium

Did someone say he asked the male players too? If so how is it sexism?

Generalisation and casual racism is fine but sexism isn't. Great post

What he said was stupid, similar to the above post

Right, can we get an answer on whether or not he was talking about this with the men as well? Until we know that, there's no point in discussing it.

So are you saying David attenborough was being sexist by using the term "man" to describe human activity?

    man
    /man/
    noun

    1.
    an adult human male.
"a small man with mischievous eyes"
synonyms: male, adult male, gentleman, youth; More
    2.
a human being of either sex; a person.

    "God cares for all men"
synonyms: human being, human, person, mortal, individual, personage, soul
    "all men are mortal"

but to be fair, of the 50 gazillion threads started by people being outraged, this is the only one that isn't aimed at a daily mail reader.

Still though, why would anyone ask that? And why would they think it was appropriate to ask that? Whatever about sexism, that DJ is a fecking idiot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

    Sleazy, not entirely sexist.
Strange though, in his apology he mentioned it was "due to his poor English and lack of knowledge on English". You were speaking French, to a Norwegian at an event in France you numpty.

The outrage is a bit mad all the same though, look at all the articles drummed up now, when the vast, vast majority had never heard of the woman prior to this.

Such a shame it ruined her moment though.

Did he want her to start twerking for them or something? I feel like it just came out the wrong way, like it was meant to come out much more light hearted than it did

It just came across as more akward than offensive to me, the norwegian girl even said in an interview she didnt really think of it as sexual comment or harassment until after the show was over

I think you are arguing your own point here. Look up the definition of female and male and man and woman. They are defined as they are, yet people go on about it should be gender neutral. I think the irony was lost on you. It 100% should be mankind. 100% male and female. 100% whatever as defined already. I was being ironic by saying surely it should be "person made" and not "man made" if you go according to modern society

I'm not arguing any point, I asked a question in relation to your post, which you didn't answer!
Do you think mr Attenboroughs remark was sexist?

Also You asked me to look up the definition of man, which was the definition i provided in response. Do you need me to look it up again, has it changed?
