Answering the front door

And what if they were knocking to tell you that your chimney was on fire? Or you'd left the key in the latch or your headlights were still on? Wouldn't you prefer to know? (I've done all three, by the way)

I don't have a chimney, I don't have a car parked where anyone calling to me door could see it and I leave my keys in the lock inside so none of those reasons apply.

Anytime I have answered the door, it's been chuggers.

Safety for me. I am not answering the door if I am in the house on my own at 12 o clock at night. If its family or close friends they are likely to keep knocking or ring me. Anyone else can wait I am afraid. I don’t really want to open the door at night on my own. Might look out the window but not answering late.

I have a beating stick next to the door just in case

Ah now its a bit weird not answering the door, all this guff about having your phone number and that is a cop out.

People dont like talking to people anymore.

People have gotten an awful lot less communicative in a world thats more connected than ever.

    Weird.... o's

Just answer the door and deal with whatevers in front of you like a normal person or lose the ability of speech to another human.

I check my Nest cams first when someone is at the door. My dog also tends to know there is someone there even before I get a notification on my phone for the cameras. If its someone he knows he wont even bother moving but if its a stranger he'll come and investigate with me.

After 10 pm I wont answer the door regardless and usually stick my head out the up stairs window.

I can remember getting up at 4am in the morning once with my wife waking me saying see who that is at the door.

Turned out to be an idiot who had run his car off the road and wanted a tow back.

Why the f**k I bothered to help him I don't know but I sorted him out before I noticed a lack of tax, insurance or NCT :o No I know why, it was my wife saying you can't leave someone stranded like that - yes I could!

If you have issues opening your own front door it might be time to talk to someone.

    Jesus lads.

No issue with answering the door per se, it's my house, my rules, and if I say get out then you had better get out and all that. But I have an upstairs lounge and if I'm sitting around in my underwear drinking tea and watching Netflix I'm not pulling on pants and going downstairs to be confronted by some tit asking if I know I was made in God's image or some such.

When it's more convenient for me to answer and the person looks a bit Jesusy or whatever, best move is to get the first word in before they can. "Oh good! Are you here for the threesome?" usually gets results for me.

Can understand elderly or rural people not answering, but people living in the city not answering the door on principle sound like atomized weirdos.

It could be a neighbour in trouble or something to do with you , like the last time it happened to me for example, somebody called in to tell me one of my kids had left my car window open.

Honestly I wouldn't take what's said here as a guide to what the general public do or think. Folks here are frightened to answer phone calls from numbers they don't recognise.

People have been shot dead answering their front doors. Criminals have often staked out addressees checking who is at home. By not answering, they are left to 2nd guess, by answering it's an invite to rob you as they have seen your face and will know your routine.

Ah here would you come on.

Not answering the door now for fear of being shot

People been struck by lightning but that is not a reason to not go outside.

People we know have the civility to ask if we are home first, and then check if it's a good time to visit. It has nothing to do with 'bothering your hole' to answer the door. It is basic manners to advise someone if you plan to visit.

So yes, I am a door ignorer. I also hate cold callers with a vengeance.

Looks like Klaaaz definitely won't be answering the door to any Lego-men!

I don't like answering the door, or even the phone, but I usually do. I've noticed that whether it's the door or the phone, it's always when you're about to eat or have just started.

My brother has a niche interruption-thing. On three separate occasions, he has called me with three minutes to go in the finale of different programmes, last ever episodes.

Could be the licence inspector. Not worth the risk.

I love all these people that sound like they're permanently bonded to their phones! If anyone wants to phone, they usually need to send me an e-mail first so I know it's not some telemarketer trying to flog solar panels or Microsoft India telling me all my computers have a virus. I'd come down a ladder to answer the door (the JWs are always good for a chat) but I'll let the phone ring forever unless it's within arm's reach.

This happened in a town close enough to where I live and that happened in the town and at 6.30 in the evening.

Our porch is always locked and there is no bell outside. The result being if someone does come by then I don't know about it which is how I want it. If a friend or family member is coming over I will know about it and be watching for them. Everyone else can fug off

Opened the door yesterday and the local drunk wanted 20€. Which I gave him.

      Why?

    • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 621 ✭✭✭Slim Charles

Why would I answer it. It's always bad news or something I don't want if I'm not expecting it. **** that

Yep, this exactly. Our lass was murder for it she would run to the door like a dog when she heard it had to train it out of her !!

It's going to be someone selling something I don't want, collecting for something i don't care about or trying to convince me that there is a purpose for religion. No thanks.

Answer every time but always have a sweeping brush close to hand in case any unwelcome visitors need chasing

I generally ask who the person is, and their business. Before assessing risk of unlatching the chain. Too many tarmacadam experts on the circuit these days.

While you are doing all that a son of the tarmacadam expert is around the back scoping out your house ;)
