Hi wondering if anyone can help my oil boiler started playing up last night it will start fine then after about 20 mins cuts out and won't reset if I leave it for 30 mins I can restart it fine then after 20 mins cuts out again any ideas how to fix it or what it could be as whole boiler was replaced only 3 months ago

After only 3 months I would get installer back. Having anyone else interfere with it gives him a chance to wash his hands of it.

However if you want to pursue the problem; what are you pressing to reset? Are your radiators getting hot during the running period? What make of boiler is it?

What dept of oil do you have in the tank?

You should have make in the installation invoice or boiler manual that should have been left with you.

Half a tank of oil and he didn't leave manual invoice doesn't say would it say anywhere on the boiler

You will need to have someone with experience look at it. Sounds like an oil supply problem, but could be something else.

Your boiler is locking out due to the optical sensor detecting an interruption in the firing process.

If the burner is flaming out, the most likely cause is poor or no oil delivery to the spray nozzle, a blocked nozzle or contaminated oil.
It may also be a re-firing issue after it tries to start up again after the thermostat trips back in.

It takes a little detective work to see which of the following issues seem to be happening.
If the burner is locking out during the firing run, check the inline filter(for blockage or contaminates like water), the pump filter or the nozzle itself. If water is present, your tank needs attention.

If it fails to re fire after a period of running check for dirty electrodes . .

If it appears to fire normally but still trips out check and wipe clean the optical sensor.

These are the quick checks, get your technician if all this fails.

running ok for 20 mins would make me suspicious of the coil but would be very very unusual on a burner of this age

even unheard of if its a riello burner

another possibility would be a faulty control stat again unusual but its only guess work without been on site

whatever the cause your boiler is still covered by manf warranty

is your system low in pressure or water

Think it might be if I take picture of pressure gauge in hotpress would you be able to tell

is the red light showing on the burner

can you feel the flow and return pipes in the boiler are any of them excessively hot

Red light is on yes when I press it it trys to start but won't strike up and I will check the pipes in a few mins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,974 ✭✭✭jimf

if the red light is on its a burner issue the fact its running for 20m I would be slow to say fuel starvation

best get it checked by the installer as its still well within warranty

don't worry about the pipes its not a circulation issue

lots of things it could but the most important thing to rule out would be water contamination in the oil tank

you could also try bleeding the burner to see if there's any air in the pipe...i had a nightmare year last year with my burner constantly cutting out due to air in the pipe. during the summer this year when the tank was empty i raised it up a few blocks, made sure all the nuts on the pipework into the tank were tight enough and so far this winter the burner has been running perfectly. havent had to bleed it even once.

could well be something like this agusta boiler fitted in hot summer months and not commissioned and set up allowing for conditions could now be very much overaired

    causing difficulty with flame impingement

just wondering are you home early or going out late

all new boilers installed should have a boiler passport with them on delivery

this is filled in by the installer as its needed to activate your warranty when returned to the boiler manf

to do this properly the installer will need a flugas analyser and the knowledge to know how to set up the boiler to manf spec

unfortunately this is not always the case and we find them later stuffed in the back of boilers

From cold, if you start it up and stop it after say 5 minutes, are you saying that in that scenario that it will not restart for hours?

    About 45 mins

so you didn't have a new boiler fitted just a burner

was discussing this earlier with agusta and he reckoned this might be the case

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 6,378 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wearb

    Yes

Shouldn’t be too hard to troubleshoot then.
After those few minutes running, how did you stop it? And how did you attempt to restart it?

The burner has to be suitable to the new boiler, nozzle and pressure and air intake all set up to suit boiler.combustion head has to suit boiler.what did the new burner cost..

I turned it on by timer in kitchen it turned on as normal then I turned it off by timer then I turned it on by timer but it just locked out I pressed the red light and it wouldn't restart then after about 3 hours I pressed the red light again and it started but only for about 20 mins then I have to water another 3 hours for it to work again I don't understand it was working perfect for 3 months
