Insoles for knee pain

    Hi all,

Looking for some advice regarding sourcing bespoke insoles. I ran the Dublin marathon last month but experienced knee pain in training and the race itself - generally after 15 miles.

I think it’s time to invest in some bespoke insoles as have had a number of physio appointments and followed extensive exercise programs but alas no joy!

Anyone know of a good place to source bespoke insoles in the midlands?

    Thanks in advance

Have you been to a physiotherapist?

I had/still have trouble with my knees. Dr just gave me antiinflammatories, physiotherapist gave me 2 exercises and when I do them I never get my knee pain, best €50 I ever spent(about 7 years ago).

P.S at the time of going to physiotherapist I was a cyclist doing serious volume

Just curious as to why you think insoles would solve the problem...has it been something that has been suggested by a physio?

Also, the marathon was only three weeks ago so you've possibly not been doing the rehab for long enough to see an improvement given its been brewing for a while.

Thanks for replying - yes I have been to a physio and he mentioned that I over-pronate and suggested I will benefit from insoles. Unfortunately there is a long-standing issue here which I don’t think anti-inflammataries wil solve.

Thanks for replying - sorry I should have been clearer I actually went to the physio earlier in the year. I have completed 8 marathons over the years and this has been a consistent issue.

Oh the anti-inflammorties weren't the answer. they just masked the issue. Whats causing you to over-pronate? Is it due to muscular imbalance?

As a user of orthotics for many years, they are a life saver for me.

I suggest you get a gait analysis done, and see if you need them.

They might cost you a couple of hundred to get a custom set made, but it'll be the best money you ever spend.

And you might be lucky enough to get away with just needing an off the shelf set which might help and which only cost 20 or 30.

Gotcha re the anti -inflammatories. Think it’s a mix of muscle imbalance and genetics also playing a role. The Overpronation is having a knock on effect further up according to the physio and contributing to ITBS. Any advice on where to go for insoles?”

Thanks - any advice on somewhere I can get this done and also who make an assessment on what insoles I need?

I went to my local podiatrist, they were able to take a cast of my feet and sent them away to get insoles made.

I know some or the local sports shops now offer the service, they video you running on a treadmill and then watch it back with you in slo-mo, and you can see how your feet, legs, knees etc are all behaving on the running cycle.

If you haven't got such a local sports store, maybe try footsolutions, I hear them advertising on Radio all the time, there might be one relatively close to you

Was having bad knee and heel pain a few months back due to partial flat feet/fallen arches and physio gave me exercises that helped a bit but didn't get rid of pain completely. He then suggested 350e custom insoles.

I got a pair on Amazon for 15 odd quid and pain disappeared within a week. I walk about 15km a day and they last 3 or 4 months at a time. I'd definitely try a few of those out before splurging on a custom made pair.

Thanks for all the replies. Think I’ll give the sport shops a wide berth as I have heard quite negative things about them. Thanks for all the advice everyone, much appreciated. I’ll do some extra research before I part with my hard earned cash!!!

David Kingston in Maynooth was my saviour for a foot problem . He measures for custom made orthotics. He works in the Leinster Clinic in Maynooth

Before I paid £160 for my custom made insoles (+ £40 assessment fee), I too bought a £20 off the shelf pair.

They worked perfectly well for about 18 months. So I'd definitely go that route for sure.

It was only after these stopped working and the pain returned that I went for the custom made ones.

    Thanks all,

May I ask where you got your insoles - hoping to source closer to home, Ie the midlands?

OP go to an actual pediatrist and not a place like foot solutions (none of them are licensed pediatrist)

The £20 pair I bought many moons ago looked very like these

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Orthotic-Insoles-Support-pronation-fasciitis/dp/B07CL88TQC

Worth a punt at that sort of price
