    Do you find it offensive?

Don't even get it. Not to mind be offended by it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,009 ✭✭✭Allinall

    No.

    Don’t find it funny either.

Don't particularly find it offensive or funny.

    What's your opinion OP?

Not sure what it is. Looks like a hunter going to shoot a badger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,009 ✭✭✭Allinall

Any SF heads around to explain it?

If you want comedy read the comments section after every article about Brexit in the Daily Torygraph. As well humour they always show the mass delusion that is currently afflicting large parts of the British populace re Brexit & the EU.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,007 ✭✭✭s7ryf3925pivug

Is the joke that brexiters fantasise that they are landed gentry or farmers and can't figure out the Irish backstop?

    Otherwise I don't understand.

What is offensive about it? Is there some slur on Irish people that I don't get?

The badger represents Tory bigwigs like May, Gove, Johnson, the hunter is the party (or perhaps the electorate).

Claiming to have a solution is a last-ditch attempt of the desperate to save their skins.

That's how I read it anyway, not sure how it would be offensive.

I haven't seen it but happy to be offended if some randomer on the interweb says I should be

English farmers cull badgers to stop spread of TB. So an outbreak of disease could encourage a hard border being accepted between islands or nations... or else they're suggesting germ warfare... or else I'm overthinking this...

Maybe you are on to something there as farmers cull badgers to stop the spread of TB. Yet they do so without any firm evidence that this is the case or is required.

I neither get it, nor am I offended by it. But then I'm not a badger so why would I be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Coming up with a solution to the backstop is so elusive it's the only thing that would stop him shooting?

Dunno. Maybe they print the punchlines the following day.

Speaking as a badger (which I now identify as) I find this highly offensive !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,594 ✭✭✭jaykay74

Whats the joke mean ? I don't get it. The badger has the solution to the Irish backstop issue so don't shoot him ?

Despite not having a clue what the cartoon is supposed to mean I have decided that I am going be offended on behalf of offended people.

As someone who considers myself highly intellectual, I'm offended that I didn't laugh as wholeheartedly as I'd expect.

Badgers like to burrow underground thus evading any possible border patrol/backstop issue for folk?

Or doesn't want to be killed, so lies about having a solution to a problem that is proving to be a massive headache?

Kinda reminds me of this TBH in it's ambiguity...

Is Matt the badger or the guy with the gun?

I knew a Pat once. Maybe they're having a go at him....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,594 ✭✭✭jaykay74

Maybe its one of those ones where you are meant to say "classic Matt" so you don't out yourself as clueless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

    Matt is normally funny.

I looked at this earlier today and didn't get it.
I then thought, "that because you are not smart kid - you are not smart like normal people".

But now I have read this thread and I'm OK again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,638 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

I'm still trying to figure out why the OP thinks it is offensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,195 ✭✭✭✭jimgoose

The chap with the gun is supposed to be former Waffen-SS Obersturmbannführer Otto Skorzeny on his farm in Kildare, and the badger represents Theresa May's badger caught in the sights of the double-barreled shotgun of mangled metaphors of history. This is offensive because Nazis, an' shizzle.

There is an on going political spat about badgers in the UK - it has been going on for years.

Farmers (=big landowners =Tories for the purposes of this argument) blame badgers for spreading TB and want them culled by giving hunting licenses to themselves.

Townies (= Labour for this argument) see them as put upon and unfairly targeted by the rich landowner types.

A recent report from Gove's office said that bad farming practice was the reason for the spread of TB not badgers.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/nov/13/farming-industry-to-blame-for-tb-crisis-not-just-badgers-report

I don't get the cartoon though - the only thing that will protect the badger is if it knows something useful about Brexit?

I don't see anything offensive to anyone there.

    A talking badger!

    Whaaa haaa haaa haaaa!

    So funny.

I will find it offensive if I can be assured that my finding it offensive will enrage the poppy brigade.

But generally, yeah, what passes as the British print media (and Sky News) is offensive to thoughtful people.

Is the issue that the backstop is referred to as an Irish problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,814 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

    It's neither funny or offensive.

If I was Basil Brush I’d be offended.

There was a report about killing badgers over TB

The paper is associating the Badger with Brexit, TB or Tony Balir is for staying in Europe and a 2nd referendum, so my conclusion is they are saying Tony Blair must be stopped at all costs, but that seems extreme...

    Why/how could they?

Because it’s an English paper and has the word Irish in it.

That’s usually enough to get a few people going.

Am I alone in never having, insofar as I can recall, found anything somebody has said/drawn/whateveryerhavingyerself 'offensive'? Ever. I have found some things unpleasant, others distasteful. My usual internal response though, is "what a cnut, to say that out loud rather than keep it in his/her head", rather than "that has emotionally wounded me".

Surely I'm not the only one?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 534 ✭✭✭eezipc

My understanding is: The badger, in an act of desperation, has offered a solution to the Irish border. Thus saving his life and possibly preventing a future cull.
The only way you could be offended is if you assume the hunter is English and the badger is Irish. But that is looking really really hard for a way to be offended.

It is a bit of a surreal/absurdist joke...could have had the poor badger saying "If you kill me, I can't tell you how to do cold fusion/make time run backwards/unscramble an egg..." etc...Don't see how it is "offensive" really.

(edit: from our point of view the "backstop" problems seem easy enough to solve but the Brexiteers of course want to still have cake and simultaneously eat it...)

Since the poison of PC was unleashed on the world -some words have become almost unusable for me ..e.g offensive , inclusive ,
diversity,equality...all now tainted by association with people who seem to have cut their moorings from common sense.

The punchline is the Shotgun turns to the hunter and says "I didn't know badgers could talk."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I'm both outraged and offended that more people are not outraged or offending by this cartoon. Do I win a prize now OP?

i remember me poor old grandad telling us about those signs on boarding houses in England after the war,
"No Blacks! No Dogs! No Irish! No Badgers!"

    feckin terrible it was ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,726 ✭✭✭Pretzill

It's not offensive - it merely means that even the badger can come up with a solution when those in power can't. He uses this to plead for his life.

Badgers don't spread TB but they take the blame for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,601 ✭✭✭Hoboo

Its about offensive as a cartoon of Muhammad sucking a a pigs penis. But not as funny.
