The minister for education, Mary Mitchell O Connor has announced the creation of female only jobs in universities and colleges because of paltry numbers of women professors. No mention of the paltry number of male primary school teachers.

Strange how we have so few male primary teachers yet the majority of primary school principals are men!

Mary Mitchell O'Connor is nothing but an embarrassment to the Irish state.

Good to see equality is still alive and well in 2018!

I'm going to apply for one of the roles, then sue them on one of the 9 grounds of discrimination. Money for free!

What about black only jobs while she's at it? She is a fool.

Why the narrow focus on gender equality?

Why not jobs exclusively for Asians or redheads or people with green eyes or Protestants or working class people with a lisp from the west of Ireland

    Jobs for the Women .

Equality of Opportunity is what it should be . Equality of Outcome is a ridiculous path to go down .

There is also a shortage of women as plasters, bricklayers, plumbers and carpenters.

Seems like it's only jobs where you don't have to get your hands dirty that are being focused on.

Most modern feminism is about the gender inequality in the top 5% or so.

I’m pretty sure men and women on minimum wage are equal. By definition.

    This is bullshìt.

Sure there are loads of female only jobs......

    Ironing
    Cooking
    Cleaning

Us men are discriminated against enough already.

The irony is that Mary Mitchell O'Connor herself epitomises everything that is wrong and dangerous about gender quotas.

Are they going to amend all the equality legislation we have on the books, to make this legal as this is going to be a legal minefield.

Why not make the whole interview process more transparent, and have have appointments reviewed by a panel of men and women? Surely that makes more sense.

I believe a change will come where a party will form for equality of opportunity instead of this nasty equality of outcome inequality of opportunity bull****

you know what it reminds me of?

a company I used to work for had a community programme whereby they employed a certain number of people with learning difficulties. these people were employed based on their disability, nothing to do with merit.

is this really the way women want to be treated?

Just identify as a female, job done. Here in Ireland you self identify. Don't think it affects your everyday life

Not surprising that an Irish Politician / Government Minister is so worried about inequality in an Elite section of Irish Society .

It really is all about the Elite with them and particularly this Government .

Isn’t Inequality of Wealth by far and away the Greatest Inequality in Irish Society .

a trans woman would make you a shoe in, all those diversity points :pac:

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

Is that because females don't apply or because they don't often succeed at interview?

    Or neither. Or both.

At third level it's 44% women.

And some of the balance could be explained by the lower number of women graduates in the past and by focus on STEM course which have had a lower % of women since the 1980's. Not a justification, it's an explanation.

    For Secondary it's 71% and primary it's 83%.

36,773 primary school teachers. , 29,544 secondary teachers

They are too intelligent and realise the hassle in being a school principal.

Because she cried so much when Leo sacked her as a full Minister so he created a baby junior Minister a Special Junior Minister job for her, just to cheer her up.

But be careful what you write about MMO'C, lads, she's a bit precious:-
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: 'There is sexism and bullying in the Dáil'

(Competent female Ministers get on with the job, whereas incompetents prefer to play the sexism card.)

They are less likely to go for the position, usually because they take the primary care role at home and don't have the time.

Edit: Is the Minister's suggestion not unlawful due to equal employment legislation?
