I've moved from single origin stuff ground in my haribo and into the aeropress to Aldi single orgin pre ground stuff. Serious savings and a good cup for £2 for 250g

However there is only one I like, can't think of the name now but it's strength 4 and in green type packaging. Same packaging as this

    https://www.aldi.co.uk/single-origin-ethiopian-coffee/p/064890139655902

    Recommend giving it a shot.

Ah each to their own tho, live and let live. I tried one of the German store's own brand a few years back and it was awful muck. I'll try this for out of morbid curiosity.

I've just had to have a sit down wit my burr ground, single origin organic yirgacheffe moka pot brewed cup of coffee to get over this blasphemey.

Rasta you're lucky that referendum passed last week, you'd be on the rack otherwise

Wow, I could have written that myself OP. I've been using the French blend from Aldi in my Aeropress for ages now. Sometimes I grab a bag of the Italian one or the Java. You can't go wrong really.

Have to agree with the OP. I dont get the extra value from premium beans. I put it down to having crap taste buds.

Yes you can. I'm sure it's possible to get a good coffee there but, as with the wine and much of the cheese, I've never found anything I'd finish or buy again.

I tried some of the Aldi beans in the brown paper bags based on a colleague's recommendations and had to throw them out! This is coming from somebody not that fussy, whilst most of the time I go for fresh beans, I have been known to use the LIDL costa rica deluxe beans when you can get them or even their Italiamo 100% arabica one and they are drinkable.

My favorites would be Bell Lane and Rave but sometimes an online order doesn't suit, and I happily enough make do. The Aldi beans just were not for me though, but taste is subjective.

Have to wholly disagree. Their coffee as referenced by OP is imho excellent, especially at price. But whatever about coffee, their wines are exceptional, any of those from about €8 upwards are far superior to what you can get for same price in other outlets.

Both Lidl and Aldi are now selling beans I noticed - not just pre-ground. Tried it out and am not disappoint.

Yeah I've being spinning away in the mornings for two years with the hand grinder and stuff from bailies. Although I do notice a big difference when I taste an espresso from a proper shop but that's just down to aeropress v machine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,239 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

    Tesco sell beans from Sumatra.

I have to agree. Once you're careful of temperature, allow the coffee to bloom and let it sit for the right amount of time, Ive found a french press and LIDL/ Aldi's finest is perfectly decent.

Will be ' migrating ' to a Chemex over the xmas. I expect things will improve even more.

I only make coffee from beans that were roasted less than 30 days ago. I can text my local to have them ready for collection and they are usually roasted the day before collection. I've lately got into the habit of ordering a few days in advance as they've better 4-5 days after roasting. So 4-30 day beans for me.

How far back is the roasted on date on the Lidl beans? :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,116 ✭✭✭✭RasTa

**** knows, they are ground too. I used to be like you however no more!

I'm going the same way for beer too. No more €7 DIPA juice bombs and most times I'm not paying over £4 a can unless it's aged in a barrel

And then the ash crushed with coffee beans which they say will release the best flavours

When you get beans from Rave they say to open bag 7 days after roasting.

Although I do have this beer in my fridge atm, would love to try the beans the morning after I try the beer so am on the lookout
Brewed with a wheat-heavy grist for a rounded mouthfeel and then kettle-soured overnight with Lallemand Pure Pitch for a gentle tartness. Lemon and lime were added late in fermentation for a puckering, zesty kick before carefully adding cold brew coffee made with single origin Kenyan Kagumoini beans

Moka pot & Lavazza Qualità Oro, a few weeks in Italy turned my head.

That's nonsense. You can use beans immediately after roasting if you're desperate but 24 hours is plenty to let them "breath".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭AllForIt

Coffe quality I think in terms of brands is highly subective I feel.

Gaggia classic & Graef grinder (both due an upgrade but other things keep getting in the way). Have an Aeropress too but it rarely gets used. I drink primarily long blacks with the odd cappucino/flat white at weekends.

Ive ordered single origin from Rave in the past but for me I found it very bitter and didnt get the £8/250g price point. I just think my taste buds are more into blended beans for some reason. I buy mostly from discountcoffee.ie and it does fine. I like Illy beans too but theyre pretty pricey. Maybe some day Ill find a single origin I really like but even then its hard for me to justify a price 3 to 4 times that of more generic beans that I do fine with.

Without wanting to cause serious ructions with what I think is my first ever post in this forum.

    But.

The Aldi Columbian instant is also the best instant coffee I've ever tasted and €2 a jar against whatever robbery a jar of Nescafe is, €6 or €7.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’m cringing reading this thread.

There is no reason for poor coffee selection with the vast array of beans available on the market coupled with a hand grinder and aero press you don’t even need to break the bank.

As for someone not tasting the difference I call bs on that. Put a cup of ground blended supermarket coffee beside a freshly roasted and ground coffee and I would suggest nearly anyone could tell the difference.

Now that said if you like the taste of bland, dark roasted, burnt coffee that’s up to you, good luck with that but I’d you want a decent cup it really isn’t that difficult to manage.

Did the op say they use a Gaggia machine and grinder, have they been taken apart and cleaned regularly and recently? If not I’d start there as unclean equipment makes even the best coffee taste average.

Which of the beans sold by Tesco, Aldi and Lidl have you tried in the last 6 months?

Roasted on date? For anyone into brewing espresso with a good crema the roasted on date is very important, needs to be within a few weeks. Generally anything with a best before date is nearly always already dry of all oils and therefore bitter.

I'm waiting for you to prove is all wrong and point us to some from Tesco, Aldi or Lidl that have a roasted on date...

I’ve tried both of those as it happens and the Althea range or whatever in the brown bags in Aldi. I’ve also tried the Italian big 1kg bag in Lidl.

The ones you posted there were average at best, they were roasted months ago and it shows in an espresso in particular. Passable through an aero press but I wouldn’t be rushing back for more.

The brown bags of beans are not to my taste at all. Oily, dark roasted, all you can taste is burnt.

The lidl Italian beans are worse than that again. They’re truely awful.

So next time you assume someone hasn’t tried something think again.

I’m all up for trying these things but 9 times out of 10 I’m disappointed.

Will stick to my yearly subs from 3FE and the like.

I buy these and nothing else I ever tried (bar one bag from that place in Mullingar, but they'd be too dear to buy regularly) has come close.

    Hi all,

Didn't want to start another thread. Currently have a french press and enjoy it much more than instant coffee. I hear an Aeropress is much better?

I don't know much about coffee other than ground coffee is much better than instant coffee. I've had hit and miss experience with coffees, mostly Starbucks as they were free. I like one from there and the french vanilla Dunkin Donuts is also quite nice.

Looking to get a nice coffee that's not too expensive (preferably in Dublin or free shipping) and maybe an Aeropress if it's worth the upgrade over a french press.

Happy to grind my own beans if necessary but would like to keep it simple.

Biggest advantage of an aero press is that its much easier to clean up, for me there isn't a massive difference in taste between one and a French press.

I use both and I disagree with this. Aeropress is good for a quick cup of coffee in the morning before going to work, but if I'm working from home I use the cafetiere.

Done properly, both are different, but both are good

I’d agree with that. Really a preference kinda thing. Personally I prefer aeropress because it’s a cleaner cup but I’m partial to a French press brew. It’s a bigger bolder brew.

Nah, Aeropress and grinder. I'm not getting 5 times the price worth using beans from bailies etc so gone back to the Aldi stuff. This stuff being the best.

I would never buy freeze dried coffee though, now that is filth
