"if I lose control, you'll know about it."

Deserves its own thread I thought.
The interview he conducted with Peter Casey last night was a disgrace. Whatever your thoughts on Peter Casey, the attack style of interview was a new low for rte. And letting a group of travellers have a free go at him made for a carcrash interview..

Tuned in for this "interview" last night. Firstly, I didn't give Casey a vote, or any of the DD candidates for that matter. Secondly, I far from agree with Casey's points made during his campaign and find him to be particularly poor at articulating his views when pressed. That said, I thought Tubridy was a disgrace. He set out to embarrass Casey, to take the high moral ground and dismiss Casey, as well as those who voted for him. That is not democratic. That is not how a fair, balanced national broadcaster should operate.

Tubridy from the outset was unnecessarily aggressive in his approach to the interview. I had no issue with questions from travellers in the audience. You'd have to be a fool not to see that coming. However, they did not seem to ask questions. Instead, they were given a platform to berate Casey. Tubridy, at no point, intervened to mediate and direct the debate to a constructive position.

He's a useless, weak interviewer and looked like a bully at times last night. Like I said, I'm no fan of Casey, but that interview was appalling, and, if anything, portrayed Casey as the victim, which gives his rhetoric and supporters more fuel for the fire.

Casey looked absolutely clueless and yet somehow came out of that interview with his stock raised.

People calling it an ambush, if it was it was the world's worst attempt at one.
What do you expect, that Casey won't or shouldn't be challenged? Casey had to face a hapless interviewer and poorly conceived points from the audience who didn't even deliver clear questions to Casey making it easy for him to deflect.

Most interesting thing of the whole piece was Casey being willing to meet Pavee Point. If they do meet, and there's a camera, I hope it's Pat Kenny or David McCullough chairing it.

I just hope the obligatory bare knuckle fight between Casey and John Connors won't be filmed vertically.

the attack style of interview was a new low for rte.

This is nothing new for RTE, RTE especially as a national broad caster, should be completely impartial. Back in the day, when Gay Byrne was in action you should have seen how one sided he was when he had Gerry Adams and unionists such as Big Ian on the late late. He used to lick the unionists h*oles and they were no better or worse than Seinfeld fein/ira.

This was a stitch up by Dee Forbes to turn RTE into her own harem by making Tubridy look like a fool so she can give the LLS to Katrine Thomas.

Just watched the interview having seen this thread. Travellers in the audience didn't come off too well. Lots of mumbling and spluttering and no real points or questions (surely they should have revised, I'm sure they'd plenty of notice?).

Peter seemed somewhat jovial, although i didn't like that he, on one hand, said people are sick of politicians talking out both sides of their mouth, but then wouldn't name a single welfare cut he'd like to make. He came off well, in general, but I've a feeling he might lose a little steam and fear he may fizzle away into the background if he tries to be too sensitive and 'pc'.

Casey came off terrible and to be honest he looked a bit like a traveller despite the suit, he looked more like a traveller than the polished man, Andy Lee?? Tubridy had on . I was wondering did RTE ply him with free booze once the travellers were safely installed in their seats.

I have never heard of this man, is there more to him than, hey look at me, I dont look like a traveller, I dont sound like a traveller but I am a traveller. Has he written a book too, was that three books plugged last night.

I noticed Tubridy didnt give the travellers a chance to speak, he was probably afraid they would revert to type, the cameras didnt span the audience either, we just got to see and hear one or two.

I havent seen the Late late Show since Gay Byrne retired and I hope to never have to sit through it again.

What was the point of Mary Robinson apart from digs at Trump, none of the RTE staff are dependent on US investments for their jobs so they cant afford to piss off the Americans . They will get paid no matter what happens in the economy because people like me have to pay that expensive licence fee so we can access BBC output.

    It probably increased Casey's standing.

I agree he was very poor, and mc williams allowed to waffle on about rubbish,

It would appear that he is not actually paid by RTE per se google Tuttle productions and youll see
Just like JD and Ray gets the lolly paid to an company and then pay themselves from the company, seems
its a efficient way to reduce tax

The Late Late Show and The Ray D'arcy Show are two reasons,if any are needed, that I utterly detest paying the TV licence.I pay it every year as I am a law abiding citizen, but it makes me so angry to do so.Ryan Tubridy and Ray D'arcy are useless at in depth serious interviews, they are just suited to talking trivial crap to pointless "celebs" and "reality" people looking for notoriety.

The absolute ****e McWilliams talked was unreal. The likes of him and Tubridy live on a different planet to ordinary citizens. McWilliams is a spoofer like Eddie Hobbs another RTE favourite.

Caught this last night it was embarrassing stuff from Tubridy what in the name of god was he at, his contempt for Casey was so obvious it was downright unprofessional.

Don’t think much of Casey and his mad ideas as it happens but he was on a hiding to nothing with the tone of the interview.

Tubridy doesn't give a toss about Travellers or people on welfare. All he cares about is ratings. He invites someone on to simply have this theatrical sparring match so as to get a few more clicks and articles.

It seems that most people on boards have fallen for it. Ironically the people that criticise Tubridy the most are the same people that watch the rubbish every week.

The LLS is experiencing a dip in ratings lately and they are going to do anything to get people talking about it.

    Casey is a moron.

His 'style' (such as it is) was no different to any other interview he has done with a politician. Not 'biased', just incompetent. A list of quick-fire questions, constant interruptions and no attempt to listen to answers or engage in any sort of conversation. Just a load of hot air. Peter Casey deserves to be scrutinised, whether his fanboys like it or not, and the targets of his attacks deserve a right of reply too. A proper interviewer would have allowed Casey to talk and talk, thus giving him enough rope.

I had to laugh at "if I lose control, you'll know about it" - We've been waiting since 2009 for him to gain some semblance of control, but it hasn't been forthcoming.

You can't compare the two situations. RTE were trying to milk the last drops out of a nothing election. The whole election was one small step above a reality TV show from start to finish. The debate last night was a shambles from start to finish and an utter embarrassment to RTE and the members of the travelling community did nothing to help their community.

    Ryan Tubridy,
    Got his job through nepotism,
Look into it if you don't believe,
Paid half a million euro a year and has the charisma of a brick.
Fianna Fail links goes without saying,
Privileged upbringing well educated, I'd say he would ****e his pants if he came to the Northside to a council estate, never mind one of the rougher halting site I have to routinely work on, really has to be seen to be believed,
I would love a "caravan" of travelers to arrive at his house and pitch up see how happy he would be then.
He could sit up on his high horse and judge everybody, the Travelers could bring their horses bring some ethnicity to Ryan's south Dublin mansion

He was born on the right side, of the right city, to the right family...he gets paid €10,000 a week despite his obvious shortcomings....any other country this guy would be on a country music type of radio station...or kids tv.

RTE is the preserve of the South Dubs, it allows talentless people earn vast amounts of money they should not be earning...and we pay for it!

It is nuts how many Irish people have no problem with RTE!

Tubridy is a joke - when he has someone on that he doesn't agree with (Casey last night, Gerry Adams before) he can't be impartial - he lets his personal feelings get in the way - which is an absolutely shocking weakness for an interviewer.

This guy is on 500k a year - some spoofer.

Because he never had to climb the ladder, he never had to deal with that self doubt that really separates the men from the boys...he has never had to fine tuned any part of his character because he was handed success, he never earned it......what we see is a talentless individual lacking in empathy, humour, warmth or charm because he is a one dimensional man, out of his depth.

Every State broadcaster has an audience, they never have to earn that audience...he has no pulling power.

But he still gets to take home half a million a year!

Just watched the interview now. Interesting how they had a couple of third level traveller students to make points, as if that somehow was more valid than if they had come from less educated travellers. A bit of a faux pax there by the Late Late producers.

Tubridy is a tool, I think everybody agrees on that. The 'don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry' moment was, somehow, humorous and infuriating at the same time. Tubridy had lost control at that moment and Casey was within his right to point that out.

As for Casey... Well, he is completely incoherent and vacuous. How he made money is beyond me. Strikes me as a bit of a shyster.

And for the election result and Casey's percentage, I think that boiled down to one thing for me - and its not that Irish people are racist towards travellers. That Pat Kenny chaired debate showed people just how willing candidates are to say the right thing or what they think is the right thing to say. Besides Casey, the other five were completely disingenuous to suggest they would be fine with travellers setting up camp on or near their property. The Twittersphere called them out on their bullsh*t and rightly so.

Voting for Casey was not a vote against travellers. It was a vote against the PR enabled crap/spin that politicians come out with to appear virtuous and appealing to the majority of voters. Casey, for the briefest of moments, related to what most folk would have answered if Kenny had asked them the same question. I believe that's why he picked up the votes he did.

I agree with that. I'd love to know how they come about viewing figures. Always thought the elderly lived for RTE but most I know watch the BBC, ITV and even CNN instead. The end product from RTE is terrible, given the funding they get.
