It's a long time since anyone asked this!

is it possible to process direct debits through a payment provider in Ireland other than Stripe/SEPA?

Not clear what you're asking. Stripe and SEPA are two different and unrelated things. To submit a request for payment via direct debit, you need to be set up as an direct debit creditor with your bank. You then need to submit a SEPA DD XML file to your bank.

Stripe provide services that help you manage your mandates, notifications and customers, but they are by no means required, or the only operators in the field

    Thanks 28064212,

So what your saying is that there are a few steps:

    1. get a creditor agreement with your bank, i.e. the receiving bank.
    2. bank send api details
    3. create the software for processing

And this software can work like this:

    1. customer buys product/subscription based on say 10 monthly payments
    2. software creates 10 payments scheduled to process at 1st of each month.
    3. Bank details are sent to bank as xml and stored (indefinitely?)
    3. On first of each month, process request for single payment is sent to bank via xml
    4. bank returns positive or negative confirmation
    5. software does some processing change the status etc.

    Is this about right?

You're assuming that the bank (a) has a direct debit API and (b) will allow you access it. Only your bank can confirm that.

    Also:
    3. Bank details are sent to bank as xml and stored (indefinitely?)
No, the bank doesn't manage any details. Only the debit request is sent to the bank (which includes the details)

It's not clear why you want to go down this route. The likes of Stripe already have integration with the banks, you're basically looking to re-create what they have from scratch. What is your actual goal?

I would much prefer to go with a third party like Stripe, but are there any others? I know Global/Realex don't do it, do you know of any others?

Haven't used any personally, but a cursory Google search of something along the lines of "payment processor direct debit ireland" throws up a few alternatives

Stripe can handle recurring payments, if that's what you're after.

I've done this before asking, I've never heard of any of them, not to say their not brilliant but it doesn't give me a cosy feeling. I think Stripe might be the best fit, if not then its the custom route.

Anyone else know if this is possible?

Some of the payment processors support direct debit handling (Realex / Global Payments) does but you need to be a direct debit originator.
There were a couple of companies offering direct debits options where you did not need to have the originator contract with a bank, but they usually cost quite a bit more.
You could have a look at this https://www.nuapay.com/en/products/new-to-direct-debit/

You setup with your bank as a Direct Debit originator. Customer of Good Standing and Paperwork etc required.
You uploaded a XML (PAIN.008) file to your bank, by logging on to their website. SEPA Instant Payments and API calls etc are vodo to Irish banks....
The PAIN.008 file contains all the information required to DD your customer's accounts.
